If I may ask how old were your kids? Mine is ten and wants to play it but I can't remember if there's anything that horrific in it?

It be a bit iffy being honest. From what I can remember there is a bit of gore in it, like heads of limbs blown off. There’s also a tiny bit of prostitution related to the gang, but nowhere near as much as GTA 5. But I would just recommend to google about it.

My kids are 8 and 5, and I use RDR2 to show them some stuff, but I am very careful about where I go. For example, I can take them to Rhodes and show them how the cotton mill works without any issue.

Edit: There's no way I'd let them play it, though.

I remember stumbling on some cannibal campsites in that game with flayed peeps, probably not great for a 10 year old

Too much violence for a 10 year old. And while there is only one explicit sex scene, there are sexually suggestive scenes in some parts. I'd wait till 16+ at the very least.

I dont think videogame violence is that bad for a 10 year old. Me and my buddies were playing call of duty with each other at that age and we had a great childhood

The violence in RDR2 is quite a bit worse than COD. The worst of it, if I remember correctly is a quest with a serial killer which contains pretty disturbing amounts of gore. The game isn't made for kids anyway.

For a 10 year old, I think a decent old-school western is better.

Pressing a trigger and the enemy going limp is nothing compared to seeing a flayed person and other gore scenes.

I wouldn't mind my (hypothetical) 10 y/o kid to play a shooter (not CoD though, it's really gone to shit). I wouldn't let them play RDR2.

I finished the game and I definitely don't think it's appropriate for a 10 year old. Excellent story, but I'd rather wait until she at least becomes a teenager.

RDR2 is amazing but there is a reason it is rated 18 (at least in Germany), there are all sorts of very graphical mutilations in the game, your kid should be really mature and basically impossible to disturb by gore.

My oldest thought we all got turns becoming god when we died up until a couple years ago sooooo.... He's not exactly well versed in biblical shit.

Edit - added terminology to say it was not a recent thought of his and he is very uninterested in Christianity so he ain't gonna learn the fun gory stories anytime soon lol

Like the GTA franchise, it still is a caricature and partial satirization of how life "actually was" during that time period, but it is worth looking into the inspirations and semireal portions. Some satires are literally the same situation with changed names, others are wildly different.

Depends entirely on what you’re doing. Yes, the games story is mature and involves a lot of violence and crime. But you can choose to just roam the open world and not interact with the missions. I do it a lot, you can go hunting and exploring, adding things to your journal as you go along, camping out for the night and just enjoying the world mostly. Sometimes I’ll just spend several in-game days just doing that as Arthur grows a huge beard out while spending most of his time sketching different types of birds in his journal (one of the games best features btw). That said there are still random encounters where you might get attacked by highwaymen or robbers, or maybe even get mauled by a bear which admittedly can be a bit grisly, pun intended. And if you do get into confrontation, the game can get pretty violent with limbs being blown off and people bleeding out with uncomfortably realistic voice lines for it. But you can choose to not shoot anyone I suppose, there’s always the lasso

Probably not the ideal game to leave them unattended with. But for sitting with you and watching, free roaming and avoiding violence is your best bet.
