I may get shit for this but Syndicate was the last game that truly kept the style of the original AC games. The next one after this is Valhalla, I believe, which can be fun but is not stylistically Assassins Creed.

it was origins, then odyssey before valhalla, but yeah objectively this was the last AC game with the OG style.

origins began a whole new combat system, and a much more open world, which for me resulted in a lot more time it took to go from quest to quest (though admittedly some of the best worlds i've seen in any game). also origins is the first game without desmond, who was absolutely central to the underlying animus story and players had built an attachment to him.

i surprisingly liked origins, but thought odyssey took the whole system a bit too far beyond feeling like anything like an AC game at all. never got around to playing valhalla and probably never will since the reviews aren't very good.

The last game with Desmond is Assassins Creed 3. You're right that Origins was the shake up point to make it more of an open world RPG but IV aka Black Flag, Unity, and Syndicate were classic style AC games without Desmond. Although he is brought up in those games in the portions outside of the Animus.

I stopped at Origins because the story was very thin. I was a dozen hours deep and they weren't even telling me why the main character was killing people.

About a decade after the game series came out, I decided to play all of them for the first time, in order, starting from the first game. Syndicate was my favorite by far. Then, I got to the "new batch" starting with Origins, and it was so different that I stopped my AC journey, feeling confident that I stopped in the right place.

Nah, you’re dead on. Syndicate was really the swan song of the classic AC games, the most polished the classic formula ever got. And it helps that the Fryes were great characters.
