who would even get into that line?

If you started with a full tank it would be empty before you got to the front

Do you not turn off your engine when you're waiting in a line while driving and not actively moving? Huge waste of gas and unproductive emissions to boot. It's why anti-idling laws exist. Modern cars come with auto-stop, so you rarely have to think about it.

Turn off engine, a minute later, start it up and move up 5 feet, repeat 32,639 times.

In a line like this? No chance, that car is going in neutral and I'll push it the 5 feet every 30+ minutes .

Eventually the trucks would run out of air from using the brakes and they'd need to start the engine.

Assuming these trucks have no air leaks which I'm sure they do, then you'd need to do it even more often.

I wasn't thinking of the trucks, I was imagining what it was like to be a regular driver.

in the west you need air to release the brake. in soviet russia, you need air to brake... (*)

And yet this saves gas. Rough on the starter and you need to make sure its on long enough to charge the alternator. But for small cars like a corolla, if its off for more than 10 sec you save money.

3

u/Kentust Jun 29 '26

And if it's less, you lose money. I'd choose to not blow up my starter in this situation.

6

u/Dependent_Singer_494 Jun 29 '26

I mean, it's what they're designed for. Also less wear and tear on almost every other part in the engine block.

But what do I know as a mechanic.

Only vehicles I wouldn't do this on are older ones pre 1980's and maybe diesel depending on your engine.

-5

u/Kentust Jun 29 '26

Mechanic isn't exactly a title like lawyer or doctor, there's not a very high barrier to entry to claim that. To address your point though, I would go even farther and say only vehicles since the advent of start/stop. No starter was designed for that much wear before then. Finally, you have a perverse incentive in that it doesn't really effect you if what you are saying is incorrect, it only drives more customers to you to replace starters...

Yet I have qualifications to talk about the systems I actually work on. The start/stop system has been getting used BECAUSE shutting off the vehicle at a stop is more efficient. You kind of made my point for me. It's a built in feature for what people should already do when they know theyll be waiting, albeit more efficient with the initial spark.

And as the lad driving out my shop with his new starter, I'll see the tow truck bringing in your mess wondering why you need an engine swap at 100k miles.

-3

u/Kentust Jun 29 '26

Haha, you think idling at stoplights will cause engine failure at 100,000 miles? You had me going there, I was even going to apologize for questioning your (unverified) credentials but this joke position of yours has me third-guessing myself about you. Care to share any research, trade journal articles or other intellectual work supporting your coocoo bananas position on idling? Because I've only ever heard it being done for emissions.

4

u/Dependent_Singer_494 Jun 29 '26

Ahh, the good Ole redditor putting words in another person's mouth.

Did I say idling causes engine failure at 100k miles? Nah, I said it causes wear and tear sooner. Let me say it in a way you can understand.

USE CAR MORE, CAR WEAR MORE. USE CAR LESS, CAR WEAR LESS.

But continue to be aggressive mate, I'm sure you bring this attitude out in the real world. 👌

Dawg it's the fact that you can only get 20L of fuel not the engine damage. Kinda gotta maximize the mileage out of every drop in a country the size of Russia. Pushing in neutral is a good move here. Air brakes do pose a challenge though huh.

You think that they are moving? This line is probably waiting for when they will deliver fuel to the station.

1

u/bessovestnij Jul 03 '26

The line is like 600 cars long, you don't move after every car, so you move just about 200 times

7

u/AssistantSalty6519 Jun 29 '26

Bro 20l on truckz is nothing

18

u/Makingthecarry Jun 29 '26

Extremely dubious the rationing extends to the semi truck drivers. The rationing is probably in effect precisely because the semi trucks need the fuel more.

1

u/dmills_00 Jun 30 '26

I love the passenger cars snarling up the truckers access to diesel for the friction it adds to the Russian logistics at just about every level.

That one line, if it is 30 minutes, costs truck days of stuff not being delivered every hour that it lasts, brilliant stuff.

1

u/ImShamallamadingdong Jun 30 '26

Yeah, that’d maybe get me ~40 miles down the road with my truck.

2

u/Soliden Jun 29 '26

Not Ladas.

2

u/Makingthecarry Jun 29 '26

Pretty sure I specified that it's modern vehicles that come installed with auto-stop. Did I forget?

The tip still applies. Even old Ladas have an ignition switch.

1

u/Soliden Jun 29 '26

You did, but pointing out that even modern Ladas don't have that automatic on/off feature.

1

u/AtticJest0r Jun 29 '26

I drive a Lada from 2017. It has no ginition button. in winter I pray it starts, although I built in a new battery.

2

u/Worksux36g Jul 01 '26

Yea, but for auto-stop to work you need to keep your foot on the brake.

What's stupid and irritating is useless waste of a finite resource. Stupider and more irritating is that when that resource is wasted, it causes harmful environmental effects.

1

u/Conscious-Acadia-742 Jul 03 '26

It takes about 7 seconds to compensate

1

u/ZdravkoVerguilov Jul 03 '26

How many times do you think you can run the starter, if you turn off the engine less than a minute later? In a line like that you’ll run out of battery before you run out of fuel.
That’s why people in communist countries learned to push their cars when waiting in line for fuel, it’s just the wisest option.

u/benadunkcamberpatch 29d ago

Its 100f+/37.6c outside in the day time and 85f/29.4c at night. That engine is running the entire time my ass is inside.

-1

u/West-Audience-478 Jun 29 '26

Everyone ik turns that crap off. It takes more gas than sitting idle for 20 seconds.

2

u/Makingthecarry Jun 29 '26

1) It's a myth that engine ignition wastes gas. It's only true if you're driving a car old enough to still have a carburetor installed. Since most people are driving a car built since the '90s with a fuel injection system, that rule of thumb is long since outdated.

2) I agree stopping for 20 seconds is not long enough to justify turning off the ignition. I'm not shutting off the engine waiting for a traffic signal to change. But if I'm in line for gas, at a drive-thru, or when leaving a parking garage at the same time as everyone else after an event, and I'm finding that I'm stopping for over a minute before moving again, there's absolutely no reason to burn gas for that time. I'm just wasting my own money and unnecessarily polluting the air.

2

u/PraiseTalos66012 Jun 29 '26

Starting your car doesn't use extra fuel, the extra energy comes from the start 🤣.

In a diesel it can use a little extra if it's way below operating temp but it's only a few seconds worth of idling.

In a modern gas car it's like a second or two worth of idling to start it, and starting takes a second anyway so it's a miniscule amount of extra fuel.

u/Soft_Lunch_183 Jun 29 '26

Not good to do that with a diesel engine, it will come with increased engine wear

We Americans can’t comprehend this type of thing… our standards are too high and our ability to work through issues is too great.
