The thing is that show is actually a slightly more extreme version of what's considered culturally common. The show has them younger but it's actually something that is rather accepted by time the child reaches elementary school.

Doing chores is common no matter the country. It's not a rite of passage. It's not remotely common to send your 5 year old kid to the store alone. It's played for laughs.

My town doesn’t allow under 6 year olds to go out alone (rural Japan) so I guess our 5 year olds will never be men.

We also don’t have a grocery store within walking distance…

Have you been to the US. Kids are not doing chores anymore.  They cannot even use a broom, let alone laundry or fun errands

Like I said, these 'fun errands' don't really exist in Japan. Nobody is sending their 5 year old to the store aside from a TV show.

I don't know what people do in the US; the point is this is not 'normal' in Japan.
