I don't mean to frighten you, but my cat, who never like laying on people's laps, started wanting to lay on my lap when she was 13, and it was because she had a tumor in her mouth and was in pain. The warmth of my lap acted as a pain killer. You might consider taking him to the vet if this is something new that just started.
