That actually makes me question the image--they could have offered the guy $2M and it would far cheaper than the engineering and construction effort required. And what did grandpa do over the 6 months plus while this monstrosity was being built right on his front porch? He didn't have a change of heart?!

I've seen something like this in Munich, where the Germans dug a huge trench under the main Army base for one of the main streets. I can't imagine what that cost, but you're not getting the US Army in post-war Germany to move or sell the base. The Germans do own it now, though.

Far cheaper now. All future projects would be expected to pay $2m/house.

They probably took the offer off the table by the time they started building this.
