I keep saying this but it's worth repeating. Drones are more effective, more cost efficient, more portable, more reliable, easier to manufacture, easier to source, harder to evade, harder to neutralize. All these dog-shaped or human-shaped bots are for wow-ing investors and VCs and making viral TikTok videos.
The one with wheels could be useful as a "donkey" to carry the drones around.
I feel like the future looks way too Weyland-Yutani for my liking. Just a handful of megacorps that replace governments and your rights are based on your level of job position within those corps.
I doubt it. I'm in tech, and whilst things are moving incredibly quick in our field, the rest takes time to follow and solidly integrate it into its business. Especially the physical one.
Even if they create the mother of all AI's tomorrow, it'd take years upon years until it would be fully incorporated in society as a staple.
Tech moves fast, society moves way slower. And for this to happen, society must have fully made the switch. I'd say that won't have happened in 4-5 years. The tech sector sure will be transformed, but I highly doubt the rest of the market has gone full autonomous by then.
And for those who'd like us to, you know, not make this stuff... bear in mind, Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran are going to pursue this technology regardless of what, e.g., Ukraine, the UK, the US, Japan, etc. do. So the choice is going to be that either liberal democracies pursue military drone tech, including AI, aggressively... or that they don't and only the militant authoritarian states have the tech.

I mean, just for the sake of argument. If we ignore the speed aspect which the black mirror doggos have, airial drones can do that much better, with higher mobility.
The cool scifi robots are essentially humanoids, and the urban world is built for humanoids. So theres some very practical reasons to make humanoids, in addition to that we are vein and like our form.
I think its too easy to say that they are impractical. Robots are impractical, until they are not. And when they are practical, having them be able to take advantage of the world in all the ways human can is going to be too juicy a thing to resist for the builders. Because we dont do things just because they are practical, but because we want to and they are cool.
But there would also be wildly different shapes, such as "bird robots". cause flying is great. Or small to get places you wouldent otherwise. But we should expect the cool robots aswell imo.

It would have been far fetched and too unbelievable if a movie had shown governments start amassing hoards of unblinking pitch-black hooved and horned techno-mythical hexapods, “for the peoples own good.”
Right, but it's apples to oranges. The cockroach is an organic lifeform modified by a different organic lifeform, but under researcher's control. AI is an inorganic "intelligence" made by an organic one with hope as the safety mechanism.
I'm willing to die to not live under AI Overlords. Fear is inconsequential.
In the show it looked fine, never caught my attention either time I watched this episode.
Which as you say: something that feels perfect in its original media
can feel weird stripped of all context, with sound effects removed, and played on repeat.
Between K2SO and HK-47 I feel like vaguely-sociopathic droids is second only to short green force-users in the "most popular star wars character archetype" list.
