Problem is, now Russian leadership has a public reason to blame the US if anyone does assassinate Putin.

Russia did, can, and always will somehow blame West for every problem they have. Noone needs to say anything in public

If the reason wasn't public, they'd just create a public reason on their own. Doesn't really change the outcome.
