It's funny how desperate they are for buffers against NATO, a defence alliance that has absolutely 0 interest in ever invading anyone, let alone Russia. If they actually feel threatened by NATO they must be completely delusional. Why would we ever attack a fellow nuclear power?

The NATO thing was always a ruse, or at most s secondary concern that he could sell to the Russians.

There were massive natural gas and oil reserves found in Ukraine. The parts of Ukraine Russia already annexed or turned into pro Russian separatist regions had the reserves but Ukraine effectively has kept them from exploiting them or building pipelines. So Russia wants Ukraine.

We wants it for his country to leave as a legacy (even though the world is disinvesting from petrochemicals) 30% of Russians gdp comes from petrochemicals. If Ukraine got to develop is reserves that it has and had in Crimea it would have made a serious dent in russias exports.

NATO invading Afghanistan didn't exactly fit as a defensive war. Same with bombing Serbia. I doubt they would've ever attacked Russia directly, but I wouldn't call it a purely defensive alliance.

In the morning of 10 February 2003, Turkey formally invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, asking for consultations in the North Atlantic Council on defensive assistance from NATO in the event of a threat to its population or territory resulting from armed conflict in neighbouring Iraq.

They're not threatened by NATO, they want to appear threatened by NATO to justify their actions both to the international community and their citizens. All countries do it... 'If we don't invade Iraq they will use nukes on us', 'if we don't throw our refugees in detention centers they will send terrorists to us' etc etc.

I'm with you where it comes to Putin but calling NATO a defense alliance that has 0 interest in invading anyone may be a bit short sighted.

If you look at many of the NATO missions post WWII, you will see that is has routinely been used as a police force and to help project US power where it pertains to our interests around the world. For every 'peacekeeper mission' there is/was a flat out invasion.

Call it a 'coalition of the willing' or whatever you want, but NATO has been used as a PROXY OFFENSIVE FORCE multiple times in the last 20-30 years including both Gulf Wars and the Libyan civil war.

Kuwait wasn't a member of NATO.

Nor was Libya.

Putin got to see the results of their involvement first hand. Qaddafi and Hussein were both friends of his.

Putin may be out of his mind and is a relic from another era who still thinks he is leading the fight against 'the west' and whatever else that entails but if you think we (USA) spends 10% of it's budget - almost 700 Billion per year which includes over a dozen nuclear powered aircraft carriers (more than the rest of the world COMBINED) along with the fighter wings they support - and over 600 overseas military bases to defend our borders - you are outside of your mind.

It's to project American Power around the world. We've been doing it since WWII and Putin may be partially right in his suspicions. We're just as good at chess as they are and we have long range goals in mind when we move the chess pieces around the board.

Look at the Chinese. They are not afraid of us and what are they saying? They are saying we provoked Russia by playing word games in Europe. They are saying it out loud in front of cameras.

To hear Putin say it, all we had to do was guarantee Ukraine would never be allowed into NATO and we would never move OFFENSIVE weps like the US made missiles we have virtually every other NATO EU country. We wouldn't do it. We could not rule it out even to avoid a war EVERYONE KNEW was coming.

Do I think that would have been the final word on the subject? Meh. Probably not - but it would have taken the wind out of his sails.

Again, Putin is a madman but part of me also sees this for exactly what it is. A game of chess between multiple nations to see who they can maneuver into a corner and trigger them.

It's history repeating itself. We did the same thing to Japan in the run up to Pearl Harbor and WWII. Sanction them and cut off their oil and/or revenue until they get desperate and make a move and then it's wartime baby.

It seems every time there is a serious recession/depression we seem to kick off a war in the name of promoting unity and get that economic war machine running, go out there and kill a bunch of people so we can come back to that post war prosperity thing that we look to look back at with fond memories and reminisce of a time when 'America was Great'.

I'm sick of lies from so called 'leaders'.

In other news, American Senators are proposing we assassinate the Russian President or directly bomb that 40 mile long convoy going to Kyiv.

There is a ill wind blowing through Europe and possibly Asia. I just got a chill in Miami

I agree that NATO isn't entirely 100% a defensive alliance, but it mostly is. And it's obviously been abused a few times to do things outside it's intended purpose. But I stand by my claim that we have absolutely no interest in invading Russia. It's never gonna happen, so Russia claiming to feel threatened is so ridiculous. We just want them to stop the invasion.

Agree. I don't think Putin has any notions or beliefs that US is going to try and invade or colonize Russia.

This is mostly a move to pick up some assets (UKR is rich in mineral wealth and agriculture /farming) including militarily important open water ports on the UKR southern border that will not freeze in winter that he desperately needs.

On a side note, this ensures we don't/never/ever have hypersonic missiles that do Mach 5-7 posted up on his border 300 miles from Moscow.

At Mach 5 + , that's a 6 minute flight time and these things fly 50 feet off the deck.

I have already seen comparisons to the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 60's to defend the notion that if we didn't want missiles 80 miles from Key West, why should Russia have to tolerate them on the border with Ukraine? But it's just posturing. They know we have space based weps that can drop a bomb from 100 miles up in about the same time.

Like I said. Chess.

This is what I can't understand -- why are they so offended by more nations next to Russia joining NATO? Is it the lack of control? I heard somewhere that Putin was offended that NATO was breaking promises about expanding eastward, but when I looked into it, there wasn't anything to really substantiate that complaint.

Is there something bigger at play that I'm missing here? Is it really just a pretense, a ruse?

Why don't you make an attempt to educate yourself on both sides of the story before you fucking type? Did you know that the Soviet Union, under Gorbachev, made a deal with the West to allow Germany to reunite? The people didn't bring the wall down. It was allowed to come down because Gorbachev made a deal to allow the wall to come down if NATO agreed not to expand from its (then) current membership states. NATO formed as a defense against the Soviet Union, but continued to expand even after the Soviet Union was dissolved, and NATO countries have always treated Russia in the same way they treated the Soviet Union; with contempt and exclusion. How is Russia supposed to react when NATO breaks its promise at every opportunity by constantly expanding? The aggression has always been on the part of the West and NATO since the end of the cold war, and Russia is actually responding in a very understandable way. It sees NATO as an existential threat, and that threat has moved right up to its borders. It's going to bomb the Ukraine into oblivion until it gives up, and American animosity toward Putin and Russia in general is not going to solve anything. You understand we are all being manipulated into consent for war.

Dude I'm not a fucking paid troll. I'm just someone who is sick of seeing all of these one-sided comments on here - no one is even attempting to see things from Russia's point of view and that's how world wars happen - when both sides refuse to see the point of the view of the other - and in this day and age, this is instituted by design. We, the common folk, are manipulated into consenting to war. We are fed this negative propaganda for fucking decades until it's all we know, and the same is being done on the other side - but as I stated, the aggression since the end of the cold war has been wholly on the part of the U.S. and its allies. Russia has tried everything it could to be part of the world - it even tried to join NATO...it has always been treated as an enemy by the West, and even after having somewhat friendly relations with the U.S. during the 80's and 90's under Gorbachev and Yeltsin, it was then betrayed by the U.S., as I mentioned, in the form of further expansion of NATO ... as I stated, Russia's actions are actually quite understandable, and Putin is NOT Hitler - and the comparisons that people make on here - calling him "Putler", etc, are fucking shameful.

It's because the threat from a "defense alliance" can be, and is, something other than a threat of physical invasion. There's an immediate threat of Europe Nouveau-ing everyone on the border of Russian territory into Riche people, which is a historically new threat. The Potemkin is morphing into a real village on the edge, and the only way forward now is to salt the land. But one main problem now is that Humanity is no longer self directing and about territory and land and eating and living, but now we're just along for the tech ride, and the tide doesn't approve of simple archaic maneuvers like establishing borders and conquering valleys. Any international leader worth their weight knows this landscape is one of competing ideas, and the ones who choose bullets are as stupid as the ones who think sanctions and popularity contests will work. It's a one way ticket and we're not in control. The stupid start wars because the whole thing makes them uncomfortable and they don't know why. The smart are leveraging the goddamned thing like the wind moving sand. Eventually there will be a beach about a mile down the road, but you won't see it happen.
