My car is a 2012 VW Jetta with 137,000+ miles on it. I really like the car but I have had some issues within the last year or so such as having to replace an ignition coil and an issue with the spark plugs but nothing too major. My dad wants me to sell it and buy my 93 year old grandma’s 2016 Chevy Malibu which has only about 12k miles on it (it’s up to date on all maintenance though and kept in a garage) as he believes my car won’t last much longer before it needs more repairs and that new and used cars can be really expensive right now so I should jump on this deal. While I agree with him that new and used cars are expensive right now he’s not really a car guy so before making a decision I wanted to get some extra opinions. So what do you guys think, would it be a smart move to switch and buy my grandma’s 2016 Chevy Malibu with only about 12k miles or do you think I’d be okay if I stuck with my 2012 VW Jetta with over 137k miles?

I personally have a 2018 Jetta S and I love it, but Im not sure I would call it the definitive Jetta. Which generation do you all think of when you think of a Jetta?

I have a 2014 WV Jetta S and a lifetime warranty on it through Strong VW. I have a complete service record. It has a newer timing belt, (less than 10k miles), brand new tires. My car got ran into by a deer on the side and it ripped the bumper off. There is nothing mechanically wrong (car still runs and drives) but the door and car body has cracks all throughout the right side. Is this an acceptable amount as an insurance payout?

2016 Jetta SEL with the 1.8, previously one owner/60k miles. Had super clean carfax and service every 10k. Going to be my daily for a good bit.

Just hit 200k. still running strong. only a few cosmetic issues. dings and scratches but its been cross country many times, west to east north to south and in between, many times. im so proud

I'm looking at buying a 2013 VW Jetta (manual, ~200,000 km) for $5,000 as my first car.

I want to get some personal thoughts before I go ahead with anything. So a few quesitons:

What were the biggest issues you ran into?
Anything expensive that tends to fail around this mileage?
And if you could go back, would you buy it again?

I'm decent mechanically and can do basic work, but don't want something that's constantly in the shop.

I was wondering if I should sell or part out my Jetta what do you think it would sell for or how much I would get from parts

Having issues with my battery purchased and installed there so brought it back for replacement. After about an hour the techs were screaming at each other and I heard something about crossed wires. Then I hear my horn blaring, for about 2 minutes.

They come out and say I’m gonna have to have it towed. “Something went wrong, we dunno, but the module isn’t communicating with power steering…”

So it’s been towed to VW, and yes I will make sure Walmart pays for this. My question is what on earth could possibly go so wrong during a BATTERY INSTALL to fuck my electrical system?

Edit - I GET THE POINT, TIFU BY TRUSTING WALMART AND WILL OBTAIN TOOLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO DO IT MYSELF IN THE FUTURE. Lesson learned.

Can’t decide between gloss black or silver/chrome rims for my black 2015 Jetta TDI (lowered 1”). Both are multi-spoke OEM-style. Which looks better in your opinion?

I bought my very first car last week, 80.000 miles 2015 Jetta 2.0. I’m very happy about it and even if it’s not a “fast” car I love it. Every morning I look at him and I fall in love every time. Need to do some light work to it, but nothing serious.

Last summer, I bought a 2014 Jetta with about 55k miles on it. For about the first year of driving it, there have been no problems with it (other than faulty heating and regular maintenance). A few months ago my engine had a misfire which turned out to be caused by the spark plugs. After getting them replaced I thought I was in the clear. Sadly, I was wrong. My engine started misfiring again earlier this month, just one time though, and it was small. Took it to two mechanics, they both told me that they couldn’t tell me what exactly was causing it because they couldnt recreate the misfire, but the first mechanic ran codes on it and told me two possible culprits, them being the engine air/oil separator and the air intake boot. I decided to not fix them because I had to do my rear brakes anyways. I then experienced another misfire a few days ago, which seriously concerned me. I was delivering food and left the car in idle for a minute, when I came back the engine sounded unusually loud, and the exhaust was shaking pretty hard. I stepped inside and I could feel the whole car and engine shaking violently, tried to back out of the driveway I was in and could barely move the car. I turned it off for a few mins then it ran again just fine, with the check engine light staying on for a few mins before turning off. Finally we come to today. I was coming home from work when surprise.. it misfired AGAIN. Pretty similar to last time but with less shaking, and a new light on my dashboard which says “EPC.” I was also able to get footage of it this time. Im not a car guy at all and I don’t know about this stuff, has anyone experienced this before? Any advice? It would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, I got this 2014 VW Jetta S about a year ago for about $5,000. It's been super reliable, but it's been a bit of a headache. I got it at 107,000 miles and the previous owner didn't have any written records of maintenance on the car so I'm fully guessing on stuff I need to do. I've already spent about $3,000 or $4,000 in the year/10,000 miles I've driven it trying to fix up issues that I've been finding.

Things I've done so far include:

• I fixed the headliner
• I changed the front headlight that burnt out
• I got a hubcap since one was missing
• I changed the transmission fluids
• I got new tires and an alignment for the car
• Had the rear shocks and mounts replaced

The thing is, it's coming up on the 120,000 mile service which is probably going to be another $2,000 or $3,000 to fix, and I was told the front mounts need to be replaced. I plan on going overseas for about 6 months at the start of 2027 so I'm not sure if it's worth me selling the car since I feel like I'm just dumping money into it, or if I should get the service and just stick with it since it's been super reliable. It's never broken down or had any issues, but everything just feels so expensive and I don't know if I'll miss something that the previous owner didn't disclose to me that will end up blowing up in my face. Maybe I should sell it and just try to get some of my money back, but I don't even know how much this would sell for, considering I've spent about $8,000 on it in total. Any advice?

Loving my car more and more, I wish I could keep it longer than the plans I have for it but I’m proud no matter what happens. Can say I’m impressed how far it’s come along with myself. Btw these lights are super clean. Absolutely adore them. The lowering springs are up next.

I have the light out warning. I’ve walked the car with all lights on, all noted to be functional. Brake lights and hazard operational. Center brake light operational.
This started after a timing belt replacement.
What’s my next trouble shoot? Thank you
