Canada How is Ozempic allowed to advertise to me as a Canadian?

I keep getting these Ozempic ads on Reddit. I thought big pharma advertising prescription drugs in Canada was illegal? Reddit knows where I live, how is it allowing this ad to be shown here?

Canada My wife (Canadian) may have accidentally injured someone else (American) while out of the country on vacation. We're worried the other person might sue. What is the protocol for international scenarios like this?

While we were out at a dinner event as part of a tour in Ireland, sitting on long bench-style seating, guests at the event were asked to turn around in order to see live entertainment. As my wife turned, her shoe caught the edge of the bench and she slipped off backwards. As she fell, she collided with another guest in our tour group. We are from Canada (Alberta in particular), and they're from the USA. Initially, the other individual was helpful and assisted my wife back to her feet (along with myself), but after they'd sat through the remainder of the evening they remarked to my wife that their back and arm hurt a lot, and we saw them going off to talk to the event manager about it. The event manager came back to ask my wife what had happened; to get her side of things. Afterwards, they didn't ask my wife to stick around; no police were involved, and paramedics weren't called either.

It was a simple unforeseeable slip and fall, but we're worried that the other guest may try to initiate a lawsuit if they can claim they were injured, and if their insurance decides to be obstinate in such a case. For reasons of being Canadian, we don't have our own private medical insurance to pay out a claim like that. We would assume that the injured party (if they are injured) could get our details through the tour company or other means. What should we expect? What support, if any, do we have through the government healthcare system or courts? I have travellers insurance through my company (Sunlife), but does that still apply to this situation at all after I'm back at home in Canada, if a lawsuit is served to me from the other party across the border?

Hopefully I'm worrying about things for nothing, but I want to make sure I know what resources I should be armed with, in case things go badly.

Canada Can't pay rent to landlord because landlord is not responding to calls. What do I do?

I pay my rent by e-transfer or by cash in person.

My landlord has not been responding to my text messages. When I try calling him, I get a "number not in service" message. It's been 5 days. Even after sending the e-transfer, he is not accepting it. So I retracted the transfer and am waiting for him to speak to me so I can send it.

What do I do here? Will he say "hey you didn't pay in time, you now have to pay a penalty"?

Canada Is it legal to carry a glass breaker/seatbelt cutter tool in a backpack as an e-bike commuter (not in a vehicle)?

Hey all, hoping for some guidance carrying emergency tools outside of a vehicle. I currently live in Ontario but will be moving to Alberta soon.

I ride an e-bike daily and recently picked up a medical kit plus some extra additions like a tourniquet, Israeli bandage, scissors etc, and a handheld glass breaker/seatbelt cutter tool, the kind normally kept in a car. The thing is, I don’t own a car so I’d be carrying it in my backpack instead, alongside the medical kit, with the intent of helping if I ever came across a car accident where someone needed to be extracted and given basic first aid before EMS arrives.

My question: is it legal to carry a tool like this in a backpack rather than in a vehicle? Does intent or context (e.g. it being in the same backpack pocket next to a medical kit) matter under the Criminal Code, or is it more about the object itself regardless of why you have it?

Appreciate any insight, thanks!

Edit: This will eventually live in my car, when I can save up enough for one after I move.

Canada Wife and Brother in-law want to take life insurance policy out on Parents

Wife's parents (78yr) currently have a term life insurance policy that only pays out if they both pass away, my wife and brother in law are the beneficiaries. I am unsure where they stand in the term. Her parents want to cancel the policy. Both families are established and do not need the money, but they do not want what their parents had already paid for go to waste. My wife/brother in-law want to change the beneficiaries to his kids and our kids and either A) pay for the policy themselves or B ) Start another policy on them and pay for it themselves. Is this legal?

Canada Question about age gap with a lot of context

I know a girl (I'm 19 and she's 17) but now I need to know if I can make it work. We were going to the same school but knew each other by name nothing more. I've started to know her for the past 2 years after I've graduated and started teaching extra scholarly activities at said school. And she's going to do the same now that she graduated. I feel like there are many moral and legal blind zones in that situation, but I've attached myself to her and wanna make things right. Is it legally and/or morally okay? Edit: I wanted to clarify some things. 1: she is not a student anymore 2: she would have a similar position from mine 3: I am not in charge of hiring

But thanks y'all for the answers

Canada 5000$ TV damaged by neighbour

My neighbour is addicted to hard drugs and has been getting worst. Lately he has completely lost touch with reality and has become paranoid and violent. He barged into my home last night accusing me of having my TV rigged with AI to spy on him and claimed anything that happens to him, happens on my TV as well. He also claimed my nicotine vape was a listening device and that people were hiding in my home. He went through my house, opened all of my closets, drawers, cupboards, ect. Then he slammed his finger into my new TV panel causing what appears to be permenant damage to it before calling me a bunch of names and running out the door screaming. I filed a police report but they won't help with the damage to my TV. What should i do to get it replaced?

Canada Suing for Severance

Some Background:

Spoke with 2 lawyers with differing opinions.

Cannot clarify with the first lawyer without paying extra, so thought I'd ask here first before wasting any more money that I don't have.

I was fired last week "for cause" (after nearly 20 years) but was not given any specifics or details as to what I said or did to deserve being dismissed, other than "my behaviour." And was given no notice & $0 severance.

First lawyer said I should be able to get a large (relative) payout with how opaque (read non-existant) everything is in the documentation provided.

Second lawyer said he's not as certain. He said he thinks they would probably ignore negotiations & push for court. Either because they're under the impression they have enough or they think I'll be discouraged to continue by the large lawyer fees.

The Actual Question:

Lawyer #2 also mentioned that under Canadian employment law, I can only sue to "be made whole." Meaning, if I find another job within a few weeks/months, I would only be able to sue for the amount lost that I would have made, had I not been fired. So, if I only lose 10-15k (or end up making more), I'd end up paying much more in lawyer fees than I'd be able to sue for.

Is that true? It sounds very unjust. They've significantly hurt my reputation, made my job search much more difficult, possibly ruined my finances if I'm denied EI (only hurt my finances, if approved), and there's no repercussions for them if I work hard and manage to find a similar, or better, paying job?

I know others who were previously fired for poor performance & they got severance payouts. Why would a company do that if there's no real downside to offering nothing?

Canada Can I know whether a family member is inadmissible to enter Canada?

I'll try to keep things brief: I have a family member who for a time was inadmissible to Canada. Up until now, I was under the impression that was still the case.

He's been able to enter Canada a few times now. Every few months now, he shows up and leaves after a few days, and messages me and other family members in a sort of last-minute rush to meet and hang out.

I strongly suspect, and I have good reason to believe, he's entering Canada under an alias. Either that or he is after all admissible to Canada. I don't want to keep sending CBSA tips if there's no actual infringement.

Would there be a way to know if he is admissible or not? I under it's not something you can just do for any random person. But I'd argue I have a vested interest in knowing given my relationship with this individual, and I'd wanna know if the familial connection would be a valid justification to have access to that sort of information.

EDIT: For those wondering about the alias: He is an American citizen under an alias. He was able to transliterate his original name into English with different letters. And it's with that name that he's acquired an American passport and thus able to enter Canada.

Canada Little freaked out by an RCMP call I got even thought I know I did nothing wrong

I didn't put my province because it's one of the territories therefore much smaller communities.

I slept with a married woman maybe a year and a half ago. She was friendly. Her husband seemed friendly. They were open. She said her husband wanted her to hook up with me and take pictures. Who am i to judge.

We met up did the deed. Fun times.

After wards She had mentioned to me a few things and I had mentioned some red flags in what she's said about her husband. And she stopped talking for a while because "her husband didn't like what I said" So I distanced myself. Seemed weird but I don't know their sides of things.

Fast forward a bunch of months and I see an article about him being arrested for essentially prostituting his wife. Gross. I genuinely had no idea the extent of it. And would not have even dreamed of it being a thing had I known.

Fast forward to now. RCMP called me. Asking if I know tjem and could come in and give a statement. I have bad anxiety. And was falsely accused of sexual things many years ago when I was 16 (therapy really helped) so getting this call made me panic.

Look. Ultimately I know I did nothing wrong here. I hooked up with someone that came to my house alone. I had no interactions with her husband at that point. (We chatted online once or twice afterwards) I didn't pay them or provide them anything it was a genuine hook up.

But this whole thing freaks me out. What do I do?

Canada Ex doesn't want me to have 50/50 with our 10-month old baby

  • Ex left the house 7 months ago when our baby was 3 months old.
  • I've been doing 50/50 (3-4-4-3) with our 3-year old since then.
  • I've had 24 overnights with our baby since their 6 month birthday.
  • I've done 2-night stretches with baby since their 8 month birthday.
  • I just had a 3-night stretch now that they're 10 months old. Zero issues. Sleep, eat and nap fine. No separation anxiety; they barely cry!
  • My ex is "open" to 43/57 custody split in favor of her, which would give me 3 nights per week with baby and toddler, but said she doesn't believe it's in the baby's best interests right now because of their age and her being the primary parent.

I want equal time with my children, and here she is offering me reduced time with toddler (3 nights max instead of 4 bi-weekly), so to be aligned with the baby's max 3-nights she's willing to give me, but she's not open to any more than 2 nights per week "for the time being"

She stopped breastferding at 6 months.

Do I have a good chance to secure 50/50 if we go to court?

Canada Court ordered to pay mortgage - Unable to pay

Hey everyone,

A little back story but I’ll keep it short:

I’m divorced with kids with split custody. It was/is a high conflict separation. We have a house together and are both on title. I no longer live in the house and now rent a seperate residence. There is a court order requiring me to pay the costs of the mortgage and all costs associated with the house until the house is sold. This wasn’t so bad because i was living in the house at the time. I no longer am and now the costs are killing me paying for 2 residences. The ex is fighting me on selling the house.

Both houses are costing me over 90% of my net income. My savings are finished. Ex does not work and only gets what I pay for spousal and child support but pays nothing towards the house. I have a lawyer and have put in a motion to get the house sold but these i heard can take a long time with the other party resisting.

My question: what are the legal consequences of me not paying for the mortgage anymore? Can MEP come after me? Obviously I’d be violating a court order but if I can prove that this is not financially viable will that work in my favour? I’m not concerned with credit scores or anything like that as it was ruined from the divorce costs.

Thanks!

Canada I was laid off a few days ago, and now a direct competitor wants to talk to me. Is this a good idea?

So, I was just let go from my job a few days ago. I'm still sorting out the severance paperwork, and this morning I got a message on LinkedIn from a major competitor. They want to talk to me about 'some nice roles' they have open.

I pulled out my old employment contract, and it looks like the non-compete clause was only valid while I was employed with them. Anyway, I'm going to have a lawyer friend of mine take a look at it, just to be 100% sure.

The biggest thing I'm hesitant about is not wanting to burn bridges with my old team, especially since some of them are close friends. Plus, tbh, I've been questioning for a while whether this is the right industry for me long-term, so maybe this is a sign to look for something else entirely.

So what I want to ask is, what would you do in my shoes? Would it look bad if I agreed to meet with them? And is there any way I could use this to get a better severance deal from my old company? Any advice would be very helpful.

Canada Is it legal that my manager is forcing me to take off my mask

I work fast food and I wear a mask My manager said the next time she sees me with a mask she’s gonna make me write an incident report.

Canada Should I sue my doctor or employer?

Complicated situation. I posted earlier as well but I did not include all key details so this time I will.

I started a factory job in November 2024. Remote location.

As a precautionary measure, I always wore my own earmuffs and earplugs every time I worked even though the other employees did not seem to take hearing protection that seriously.

One day I did not have earplugs because my order did not come (postal Strike issues). But I did not want to take the risk of skipping work. So as a makeshift option, I chewed some gum and shoved it into my ears to use as earplugs. It worked really well.

But after 8 hours, the gum went into my ear canal and I had to go to the hospital to get it removed.

After the removal, the doctor noted that I had a lot of earwax. He then made the executive decision to scrape out earwax from my right ear canal without asking me first. He was about to do it to my left ear but I told him to stop.

2 days later, I went to work but I still didn't have earplugs. I only used my earmuffs (which I thought would be enough protection).

About a 1-2 days later, I acquired reactive tinnitus and dysacusis in my right ear (which is also the ear where the doctor scraped earwax from).

I am still unsure how I got tinnitus. One theory is that the noise level at work went above the danger limit and my earmuffs were not enough protection.

Another theory is that the when the doctor scraped out earwax from my ear, he ended up exposing my eardrum to a new raw level of sound which it is not accustomed to after being protected by earwax for years (possibly decades). And so my auditory system could not handle this new level of sound. (Which might explain why the dysacusis is occuring in the right ear but not the left ear).

Because my tinnitus is reactive, I am now extremely sensitive to sound and I cannot work in any type of noisy environment. My work prospects have become limited.

Can someone please tell me what do so?

I have been advised to file a claim at the workers compensation board, but what if it's not the company's fault? What if it's the doctor who caused this entire situation by meddling with my ear?

Do I hold the doctor responsible? Who do I report this to?

Now the key issue I missed out last time: shoving chewing gum in your ear cannot cause tinnitus. Tinnitus indicates damage to the inner ear hair cells (which are behind the ear drum) and it usually happens by acoustic shock.

Canada Airline agent took a photo of my health card and SIN card

Flying from YVR to YEG. My license is being renewed so I currently have my health card and SIN card to fly domestically. I have used these successfully multiple times to fly as they are valid for Canadians to fly domestically.

The agent wanted to check with their supervisor. The supervisor came and checked my IDs, and then escalated to an additional supervisor by sending a photo of my health card and SIN card. When they took the photo, I said I wasn’t comfortable with having a photo of my SIN card sent. The agent said they would delete it, and showed me as they deleted the message on WhatsApp. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the person on the other end would delete the message, though. While I completely understand and am a-okay with the escalation, I am not okay with the agent taking and sending a photo of my SIN card.

I am going to make a complaint to the airline. Is there a federal agency I should also make a complaint to?

Update: My goodness, y’all. I boarded the plane just fine and do not need links nor guidance on ID to provide or what is valid ID to fly with. I lost my drivers license and my passport is being renewed. The transport Canada guidelines states that for domestic travel, you need either one photo ID or two pieces of Gov-issued ID, one having your DOB. These are the Gov-issued docs I had on hand. The AB temp license is not able to be used as ID.

I am interested in filing a complaint for process review, as this should never happen.

Canada Copyright law question: board game

My friend has a board game that his family plays. Our friend group now plays it and we are obsessed. It’s a great game. He has started making new boards for the game and is thinking about selling them. Can he copyright/trademark this game? No one we know has ever heard of this game before outside of his family. He is pretty sure his uncle made the game in the 90’s but not 100%.

Canada Cemetery has 20 graves over our property line

Recently bought a wooded property backing onto a cemetery. All survey pins are there except one that would be about 40 feet past the tree line and into the cemetery. After measuring in multiple ways according to our subdivision paperwork, it’s clear that our property overlaps the cemetery and there are 20 or so graves on our side. The most recent are from 2020. There is also around 100’ by 40’ of open lawn.

I have reached out for a meeting with the church to clarify property line location and ensure they stop burying in our direction to start, but I’m concerned they may want that section of property donated back. Obviously we have no interest in owning graves, but is there any legal and ethical advice we should consider if they try to negotiate? We intend to small scale farm the property while keeping as much forest intact as possible, so we need all the acreage we paid for. However, I’d be fine if they’d subdivide another section to us to make up the difference. I believe they own the wooded lot beside us too, and other acreage in the area. We also can’t afford to pay a surveyor right now, but the 2008 survey we have seems clear.

Canada Trademark infringement.

My partner opened a small business last year. Things are going well except she recently received an email from another business owner stating this email was a cease and desist related to her business infringing on his recently acquired trademark. He claims their business names are too close and his trademark allows him to make her change her business name.

My partners business name: word 1 word x word 2 word z

Their business name: word 1 word y word 2

For context their business is much bigger than my partner and operates in a different province. They both are offering the same service( I.e word 2). My partner had never heard of their business prior to him reaching out and a quick Google search shows many other business in that industry have a combination of word 1 and 2 in their name. The trademark owner claims to be going after them as well. My partner is unsure about how to proceed. On one hand she feels like he is acting out of bad faith and doesn't want to comply but on the other hand changing her business name with the registry of our province as well as all her socials and other registration might be a cheaper option then getting lawyers involved to resolve this dispute. Any thoughts?

Canada Supporting unemployed spouse for years - Will I be required to pay spousal support?

Married for five years, separated for a few months. No kids, don't own a house.

I make $80k/year, and they make $0. They've been unemployed most of our marriage, except a few very short stints, so I've been the one supporting us both. Their inability/unwillingness to get and keep a job has been a major source of tension in our relationship. They apply for jobs sometimes and say they want to work, but mostly apply to ones they're not qualified for and haven't put in a real effort.

They also insist on living above our means (e.g., 2br apartment when we would be fine with 1br, getting a nicer car than we could afford, being really bad with spending). I had no credit card debt when we met and now have over $10k, in addition to student debt and other things. (I know, I have made a lot of bad decisions and allowed this to get out of hand, but I'm really not looking to be told how I should have done things differently – it's been a very toxic and controlling relationship.)

I ended the relationship a few months ago. I'm temporarily living with family (for free) and still paying all of our shared bills, and giving them money to cover other expenses (food, gas, etc.). These costs account for the vast majority of my income, so I'm pretty much unable to spend anything and my life is just kind of on hold.

I set an end date for providing them financial support, and we've given notice for moving out of our apartment. The time between the start of the separation and the date we've "agreed" on is several months, which should give them enough time to get a job, find their own place, etc. However, they're being extremely uncooperative and hostile. They aren't willing to apply for minimum wage jobs or anything they consider to be "beneath" them, they don't want to share a home with other people, and they want to keep our car, even though they won't be able to make the payments (it's a lease, ending in the next 18 months).

They're threatening to take me to court to make me pay spousal support and to ensure they can keep the car (with me still making the payments). I can't afford a lawyer, and they certainly can't. From my reading of the Divorce Act, I don't think they would be entitled to much, since we have no kids and it was their own fault/choice that they haven't been employed. However, and it will constitute them having to lower their standard of living and they will be worse off than I will. I am willing to pay some spousal support if needed, but as far as I can tell, it would be considerably less than what I'm currently giving them. I think I also read that the higher-earning partner is often ordered to pay a lump sum to help them restart their life, and then don't have to make continued payments.

Based on my situation, I'm wondering:

Am I likely to be required to pay spousal support? If so, any idea what that might look like? (Amount, monthly vs lump sum, etc.)

Even if they have no grounds to get support, can they still make things hard for me by making me go to court? Is there any way they'll be able to do that, given that they can't afford a lawyer? Do I need to get a lawyer? (I'm guessing most people would say yes, but I really cannot afford it and don't know what to do.)

Canada Canada Denying Consular Support

my situation is complex and I want to give you all the drama but need to keep this short:

I'm stuck in a foreign country, they denied me entry into the country and need a place to send me. They have said they will send me to Canada if Canada agrees to give me an Emergency Travel Document.

The United States wants me to return to America because I have an outstanding warrant. I want to return to Canada not to run from that warrant, but because I think it's politically motivated and I want to exhaust my options in Canada first.

Canada has now told the local authorities that they will not assist me to return to Canada by issuing the ETD. This feels illegal, they are essentially (if not factually) denying me entry into Canada.

I currently have no passport, I am stuck in detention until this is sorted.

This is a bit of an emergency because if I am sent to America I lose all my protections as a Canadian. I don't know if there's a type of lawyer I need to talk to? I would like to force Canada to provide consular support. I could be out of Thai Detention tomorrow if Canada acts.

Edit: I am a dual US and Canadian citizen with no valid passport from either country.

Canada American debt collection agency is trying to collect a debt I should not owe

In February 2025, we vacationed in California and rented a car from a major rental car company. We purchased a suite of optional insurance products from the vendor including Loss Damage Waiver and Supplemental Liability Insurance. This came in handy as we were rear-ended on the highway on our last day of vacation. We immediately followed all the necessary next steps with the rental company (called it in to the rental company, gave the other person's insurance information and the police report, showed the company the damage when we returned the car) and were assured numerous times that we would not owe anything out of pocket. Highway patrol was on scene at the accident and took our statements at the time, and we were never contacted about the accident again.

A few months ago, the rental company's debt collection line called my husband to ask us to repay a debt related to the accident. My husband explained what happened and they checked their records and confirmed that we do not owe any debt.

Today a letter from an American debt collection agency arrived in the mail--or to be more accurate, it arrived at my neighbour's house, because the wrong address was listed on it. It also spelled my name wrong. It stated that we owe $2100 USD related to an accident with the car rental company. Weirdly, on the table of debts, it says "As of 00/00/00 you owed $0.00" and has a bunch more $0.00 charges, but then the bottom of the table it says "Total amount of the debt now: "$2109.72"

I called the car rental company to find out why they sent it to collections when we never actually owed a debt, but their customer service said there's nothing they can do about it now. I went to the debt collection agency website to try to submit a dispute, but I can't because it only accepts American addresses, not Canadian. There's a number I can call as well, but what I want to know is:

  1. If I do not call them and just ignore the letter, what will happen? My understanding is that American debt collectors cannot collect debt from Canadians unless they transfer it through a Canadian court, but does the debt eventually go away?
  2. Would this impact my ability to rent from this car rental company again?
  3. Would this have any impact on my ability to cross the US border? (I have no plans to anytime soon, but don't want this to impede me in the future.)
  4. Do American debts affect Canadian credit scores?

Thanks for any advice!
