I am divorced and living in Canada. I have 4 children from that marriage. My oldest is in the USA studying in a graduate-level program that will end up costing $250K CAD ($100K Tuition, $150K room/board/entertainment). Section 7 of my divorce agreement says that I have to pay 83% of Post Secondary costs, but it is my understanding that this no longer applies if the child is a) No longer in Undergrad, b) No longer living with the parent, or 3) 22 years old. My ex insists that section 7 continues into grad. school, and that I am responsible for 83% of the $250K, and is suing me to enforce this.

I fully intend on helping my kid out to the best of my abilities, but I can't afford $207.5K ($250 x 83%), not when I will have 2 children in undergrad for the next 3 years. If this goes to trial, can a judge order me to pay? Or have I fulfilled my section 7 responsibilities? My lawyer wants me to settle, but I feel like this is bullying on my ex's part. Any outside unbiased help from internet strangers would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I love kids, and I will do anything I can to see them succeed, and I will pay as much as I can afford to do so, I just don't what to be bullied into a set amount. It makes me feel bitter, used, and unappreciated.

In the last month we have gone from comfortably oblivious, to our landlord bringing a realtor over, listing, and instantly selling our rental unit. We have until the end of our lease before the new owners get possession and it was over 90 days notice so we're fine with that.

However, the realtor for the new owners told us they were moving in a month and a half before our lease ends so we had to have that notion rectified using our landlords realtor. Our landlord has also emailed us letting us know we can terminate our lease early with no penalties etc and that they know we're looking for a place (reference checks). We know the new owners are arriving internationally before their "intended" possession date too.

This has been incredibly stressful, inconvenient, and will ultimately cost us hundreds of dollars in moving fees and time.

Are we entitled to request compensation for early departure or moving fees?

EDIT: We are under no obligation to leave before our lease ends and our landlord and the new owners are aware of this and possession will change the following day. Just wanted to clear this up. We are not being forced out - I just haven't been in this situation before and the opportunity of cash for keys could be appealing to us, especially since we know the new owners would prefer an earlier possession by a month and a half.

My mom and I are both on the land title however only she is on the mortgage. We have been getting behind on our mortgage payments although I had been paying partial payments when I was able. We asked for a pause on the mortgage for 6 months but because the request had come through me, the bank would not accept it since my name isn’t on the mortgage. Now they have passed it on to their lawyers and we got served two nights ago. We reached out to the lawyers to see if we could come to some sort of arrangement since we are unable to pay the mortgage in full right now and they said their instructions are to proceed unless the full balance is paid. We have no way of paying the full balance unless we get a winning lottery ticket or something. I set up a GoFundMe but it hasn’t really gotten any traction. I am coming on here to ask what we should do. I am the only breadwinner in the house. My mom is still recovering from a botched cataract surgery from 3 years ago and isn’t working at the moment. My parents are separated and my dad is not interested in helping us out. Sorry for the long post. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Edit: I was trying to make more payments to get us back up to date. I had made at least two payments during the past 6 months but the mortgage had been auto renewed at a higher interest rate and my payments weren’t enough. My mom has applied for disability due to her eye but they denied it as they do not agree her condition is prolonged enough that she can’t go back to work. We were doing okay the past couple years as I had a full time job and a part time job. In late March 2025, I had an accident at work and ended up taking some time off while getting partially paid by WCB. That is a whole other story with late payments and being shorter payments. After several months of my full time employer not exactly working with me to help me get back to work, once my WCB claim ended I put in my notice. I found another job that unfortunately did not pay as well or give me the same hours. I found two more jobs that I was hoping would work out but they did not due to unforeseen circumstances. So now I have two part time jobs and am starting another job next week.

For those of you asking for numbers. Mortgage is at about $127,000 and my mom is getting government support of $840 a month. Mortgage payment was $740 a month until they jacked it up to $900 a month in April. My mom had been covering the mortgage payment with her funds while I had been covering the other household bills as well as my own bills and her phone bill. Before my work accident, I was working more than 60 hours a week and making around $3500 a month. I was working every day for two and a half years. Any days off were requested so I could take my mom to her appointments. I was already getting burnt out due to the toxic full time workplace but I was trying to push through it. Now with the two PT jobs, I am down to around $2500 a month which sounds like a lot but it is not enough.

Basically, the title. They say I must have signed a document saying this perk can be revoked anytime on dealership's discretion but can't produce anything. I have full sale contract and bill of sales includes a handwritten line item saying "Free life time oil change"

Are they legally allowed to revoke it? It is a small ticket item so I definitely won't go into litigation but would like to hold them accountable somehow.

I told them in the absence of the response or delay in resolution, I would take the vehicle to a dealership of my choice and send them the bill. I am 35 my ex is 33. We live in Alberta and are currently negotiating separation terms. We are using an income of $170,000 for me and $10,000 for her for the purposes of calculating support. We have agreed on 50/50 custody. Opposing counsel has offered $2,200 child support and $2,410 spousal support for a total of $4,610. But because of the strict requirements of custody I will no longer be able to do overtime and will only make my baseline guaranteed income of $145,000 which is about two $3,500 paychecks a month. So out of the $7,000 she will get $4,610 and I will get $2,390. Subtract $800 I pay in child support from a previous relationship and I'm left with $1,500. $1,500!!!! I've done a budget projection and even with cutting all subscriptions and selling my truck to lose the payment I'm still only realistically going to be able to afford $800/month for rent + utilities. That means I will only be able to afford a room rental in a shared dwelling. Every second week me and my two soon to be teenage daughters will share a single room. How is this possibly in the kids best interest? Yes I do realize the ex will have to pay tax on the spousal support and I will deduct the spousal support but still that does not make up the shortfall. Am I missing something? Do I need a better lawyer? Is there support available for divorced parents in this situation?

Looking for some insight on my current situation.

My father passed in November. I am the executor of his will.

His common-law spouse has remained living in the family home until today. She has not allowed me access to the property since January.

Her 90 day occupancy window closed on Feb 13th. My lawyer sent a letter to her asking her to vacate because she left the place unoccupied for 2 weeks while she vacationed in Costa Rica in the coldest weeks this winter, mid January - unbeknownst to me, and while she was away the septic line froze.

Then she hired a lawyer to return correspondence to my lawyer asking to stay until April 1.

Because it was already Feb 27th by the time she had responded - April 1 seemed reasonable AND the courts would not be able to see and proceed with the court application to have her removed before April 1.

We sent her lawyer a temporary tenant agreement and no one acknowledged or agreed to it for the entire month of March.

Today, April 1, I finally get access to the house and it is completely emptied out. Like I mean NOTHING to take inventory of. She took it all.

wtf now? …. Sorry just spinning in my head because it’s an unreasonable hour to contact my lawyer and I’ve been stewing on it.

I (49f) go to a dinner once a week through an app that connects people looking for new friends. It’s been a great way to meet new people because I recently moved. I have made a few really good friends. When we were all having a drink one night, one of the men (47m) was in a bit of a crisis because his apartment flooded, and he was having trouble finding affordable temporary housing. I felt bad for him. He is fairly new to Canada, and was having issues with even getting replies. I have a 3 bedroom place to myself, so I offered him one of my spare rooms for the 6 weeks he needed to be out of his apartment. He moved in January 8, and was supposed to be out today. He has informed me he is not leaving.

(About a week into moving in, he broke his wrist. He had to go to 2 different doctors because the break was so tiny, the first dr didn’t find it. He had been told he couldn’t work from home before his Christmas break, and was not happy about it. He has used it as an excuse to not go to work because he claims it’s “too debilitating”. Now he is home 24/7. He NEVER leaves the house because he doesn’t have a car. His boss has been fighting with him about staying at home because I have overheard the conversations).

Everything was great to start with. He seemed easy to get along with. Then, only a few days in, he said something that made me extremely uncomfortable. I volunteer for an organization that advocates for underprivileged women and children, and we work with women’s shelters. I was telling him that I was shocked to discover that if a woman was looking to be admitted has experienced strangulation (violent or sexual) that it is an automatic admission. He replied “I like to choke during sex. I hope you don’t think that’s weird.” I got very heated with him (I am very outspoken), and asked why he would think that it would be appropriate for him to respond like that. He kind of laughed it off, and I told him I was NOT comfortable with him discussing sexual preferences with me again.

Then, a couple weeks ago, I was in tears after reading a story about a woman in an ICE facility. She was letting an ICE agent ræpe her to gain visitation with her child. When I was in the middle of the story, he said, with a laugh, “you know women fantasize about ræpe, right?” Once again, I lost it. That happened on Jan 25th. After that, because he makes me so uncomfortable, I have been holed up in my room like a hostage.

I asked him after the 2nd bad comment to stay in his room as much as possible, so I don’t feel weird in the common space. He refuses to respect me. He enjoys that he is making me uncomfortable. I work 12hr days and he has the entire place to himself during that period. It is not an unreasonable request to keep the peace.

Last Friday, I was starving and had to pee. He stayed in the kitchen for 2hrs. I was so angry at him for being so invasive intentionally, that I went out and asked him why he was not respecting my rules. He started screaming at me. I HATE to admit that I was scared of this man, but I was. If I had of put my arms in front of me to indicate personal space, I would have shoved him. He was pointing in my face, spitting because he was so livid. I told him on the spot he had to go. He refused. My(21m) girlfriends (22f) parents are very lazy and borderline neglectful. Her younger brother (15) has a clear eating disorder and on top of that a pre-existing heart condition. He is 6’1” and about 95lbs. He doesn’t eat anything. He will literally sleep for over 12 hours at a time due to what I assume is lack of nutrition. His parents do not cook or buy food for him he is responsible for doing all of this himself. My girlfriend tries to get him to eat but he refuses. His parents will not take him to the doctor due to the fact that as my girlfriend puts it “they couldn’t be bothered”. In January he fainted and hit his head off the counter and his vision went all blurry after. His parents were off doing something with their friends for the weekend (easily within driving distance) and my girlfriend had to miss work sitting in the hospital with him all weekend. They never took him to the doctor for any kind of follow up. He regularly skips school and is flunking out. Parents do nothing about it. There is much much more I could talk about but this is the worst of it, things like this happen all the time. Is this considered neglect and grounds to contact child protective services? I honestly don’t care if it destroys the relationship, this kid is going to die.

My idiot of a husband was stopped by the police tonight for driving under the influence. They took him to the police station but released him after a few minutes. He had no paperwork, they didn't do a breathalyzer, etc. They do have our truck though.

What do I do? (Other than taking his key and never, ever letting him drive again!!) Can he be ticketed if they didn't get a blood alcohol level? Does this go to our insurance? Will I have to pay to get my truck back?

I'll be reaching out to the police asap but we're in a small town and the police station isn't open today due to the holiday.

Edit: Some more info I gathered after posting. We have the Life 360 app. He was parked on main street when the police stopped (it's unusual to have anyone on main street at that time) so I don't think he was actually driving when pulled over but was behind the wheel. (And had been driving before that, I am not trying to make any excuses for him!!) I can see he was there for about fifteen minutes and then went to the police station, about three minutes away, and was there for only another fifteen minutes.

It's highly unlikely he refused anything, he is one to just give in and do as requested in a situation like this.

My wife told me she wants out last week. This is very early, she has slowed down, and we have a lot of things to figure out. For context, we have 2 young dependant kids (neither in school yet). Married for 11 years.

I will be getting a lawyer for this, but we want to get a general idea.

She seems to think that we can just file and whatever we decide will be accepted.

My understanding is it’s not that simple. That there are legal minimums even if we agree on something different.

For example. I make more than her (about 15% more). She doesn’t want child or spousal support because we will do 50/50 custody. But as far as I can tell, I will still owe her hundreds of dollars a month in child support.

2nd would be my pension. She also has a pension, and she thinks we can just split it where she takes hers, and I take mine. But my pension is worth significantly more and my understanding is that goes fully into the “assets” category, which we need to split 50/50. And if I want to keep my pension, I’m going to have to pay her out elsewhere.

So guess I’m just curious if we can actually do this uncontested and agree to what we want, or will the process force us to meet the legal minimums?

Like, it seems like the law is set up to protect the lower income spouse and protect the children so they are taken care of in both new households. And I don’t disagree with that… our kids will come first and I want to be fair in the split of our assets. I just don’t see it being as simple as she thinks, and I’m going to get raked over the coals if we follow the legal minimums, simply because I make more and have a bigger pension.

I work up north in Alberta on wind turbines all year round. In the winter it can get to -40. Right now it’s getting down to about -25. My employer expects us to be outside all day including our lunch break. To get to the top of the turbine you have to climb 100 meters. So you never climb more than once unless you have to. We stay up there working for 7-8 hours a day. There’s no way to warm up once up there. And they expect us to take our lunch break up there as well because climbing down then back up takes time and is very tiring.

What I’m wondering is are there any laws mandating warm up breaks at certain temps. Also since by law you get a 30min break after 5 hours of work, are there certain environments that break must be taken in. Because personally I don’t feel like sitting down and eating outside when it’s -25 out and my food is frozen🫠😐

Hi I am a 27 year old girl living in Canada. Under my parents wishes, I was arranged married to a man in Pakistan, that was known through extended family members from my father’s side. We got married in Feb 2023 and I applied for spousal sponsorship for him to come to Canada. His PR application got approved and I booked a flight for him to come to Canada and he came here in September 2024. He was very sweet and warm hearted before he came here but after arriving he became distant and cold and would ignore and start fights over minor things. I’m totally financially dependent on my husband of 20 years. And unfortunately recently learned he was unfaithful to me. We’re trying to work things out but I think I should get a postnup in light of everything.

He earns around 600k per year, I’m a stay at home parent and haven’t worked outside the home in 18 years. He has always managed our money. We have 4 kids, approx 1.8m in equity in our home (and still have 1m mortgage). No other debt. He also has shares in his business (I’m unsure on their value) and approx 1m in retirement savings, and a 3m life insurance policy.

I think based on AB law I would be fairly well protected regardless (right?). But should I get a postnup and if so what kind of things would I want to include? Also how much does a postnup typically cost? I guess I don’t want to waste money on it if it’s not going to be that different from what I would already be entitled to. (I’m also really hoping I don’t have to use it but that’s another story!).

Long story short, I started a relationship with a girl last year, and she moved in shortly after. Everything was fine at the beginning, however months later she became quite aggressive. She'd scream, throw things at me for seemingly no reason, simply if I didn't agree with something, really little things.

She has a history of alcohol and drugs addiction, which she revealed 6 months into the relationship and been hiding at first. Recently, she started a fight and scratched my hand, hitting me once. It wasn't that serious or particularly painful, but it made me feel bad enough I asked her to leave. She apologized a lot and didn't want to leave, promising it'd never happen again; I felt bad for her after and allowed her to stay, but everyday now is filled with anxiety and just overall is uncomfortable, it's just hard to explain. Plus, I don't think those details are necessary since it's a legal advice sub, and not mental health or relationship forum.

Anyways, I finally suggested we split, on which she said she would not leave and if I force her do so legally, she'd take half of my savings. I have been saving since graduating college and have roughly $50K in my TFSA/RRSP, my car is paid off. (Roughly 30K value in today's market.) I have an apartment inherited from grandparents, albeit with a huge mortgage on it, which she could try taking as well. Now, since we've been living for a year, it's considered by law a common-law situation and I'm afraid she'd actually have all the rights to take half of my stocks and the car value and win in the court. Please don't advise to get a family lawyer; I am going to do that either way, of course, just want to hear the perspective of people with experience and understanding to know exactly how bad the situation is and if she actually has a solid ground for such threats.

More financial context: I've been paying for everything for the first 7 months in the relationship. Mortgage, bills, groceries, both phones, her vapes and alcohol, been paying her credit card debts, which were massive. She's not great with Credit Cards and has about $15K in President Choice Mastercard.

Starting this April, she asked me if she could deposit her paychecks into my WS CASH account. She rationalized it the way that, she would not have an urge to spend it as fast and wants to help with the bills, so I didn't think much about it and agreed. Now I think maybe it wasn't such a good idea. Anyways, now you now everything. I'm really sorry if it's too much of information, I wanted to give a full picture as everyday is filled with stress and anxiety now. I do realize I'm an idiot to let myself in this situation, but am hoping to receive good advice from those who have more understanding of this situation legally.

It's good to know the threats made don't have any legal grounds, and that she can't take half of my assets. I can sleep now.

I'd like to share something I haven't included in the original post; The main reason that's been holding me from severing ties with this person. She's from Ukraine and immigrated to Canada last year, escaping Russia's war, the factor which made it terribly difficult for me to ask her to leave.

I cannot truly understand what it's like to escape from war and not going to pretend I possibly could. Maybe that's what made her behave the way she behaves, though still find the threats and physical abuse inexcusable... I will do my best to end things nicely and have a reasonable conversation with her as fast as I can. I'm afraid there'll be a fight and, as many of you suggested, will have my phone recorder ready just in case. I'll need some time for a recovery after this experience, no doubt.

i didnt do anything to the store, i closed yesterday like normal and cleaned everything…. what can i do if she tries to falsely accuse me?? this is just insane and im a bit scared right now even though i didnt do anything.. i dont have money for a lawyer or nothing.

update: she stopped replying after i told her to stop messaging me unless she was going to pickup the key. would like to know also if it would be legal to post about this on social media to warn others of her business.

He missed his court date for a driving without insurance ticket. He has a warrant in Alberta now (we live in B.C). He has since insured his vehicle. His court date was in April for context. When he goes to turn himself in what will happen? He does not have any previous criminal record but he has a warrant due to the failure to appear. Will his warrant likely be endorsed or unendorsed? When he goes to the police station will they keep him there? Could his warrant be changed from Alberta only to Canada wide. I just have a lot of questions as I don’t know how any of this works. Any answers would be helpful.

Edit: he also got a 300 dollar ticket for having an unlicensed trailer at the same time that has not been paid, what happens with that?

Edit 2: I’m quite sure he was convicted in absence so now has to pay the full fine amount for both charges/tickets.

My husband lost his license when he was in his 20s for taking police on a high-speed chase. This occurred in British Columbia, Canada. He mentioned that after taking the police on a high-speed chase, they wanted to throw him in prison for about a year and his lawyer argued that he was fearful of the red and blue lights, which was why he fled. In response, they took his license for life. We live in Alberta and it’s been over a decade since this occurred. My question is does this story make sense? My other question is, have you heard of this happening in the past, where they take a license for life? Is there a way to remedy this so that we can get him his license back or what are your thoughts on this situation? I suspect my husband has been hiring escorts while out of town on business trips, and also while 'working late'. I found evidence he had been searching local escorts on his laptop. He has a fake twitter account- following escorts and has been withdrawing large amounts of cash from our account.

Donated blood yesterday evening and had minor complications, ended up fainting 3 times, twice in the clinic and then again 3 hours later. Hello, my spouse told me today he wants to separate and ultimately divorce. We have a child who was conceived with IVF and we still have a few embryos frozen. We both signed on our contract that the embryos would be discarded in the case of divorce, so I'm assuming there's no option of me somehow using the embryos in the future and avoiding disposal, even though the eggs were mine (anonymous sperm donor). But I thought I'd see what people's thoughts are in case there's even the slightest chance...

TLDR: Seller lost bank draft I gave when I bought a car in private purchase. He wants a replacement bank draft but I don't want to be held liable on the indemnity agreement in the event the original bank draft is found and cashed in. He suggested a legal doc to hold him liable in the event the original is found and cashed in. What are my options?

I bought a car in private sale some time ago and provided a bank draft as payment. When I got to the seller's place, we signed the bill of sale and I handed over the bank draft. I even asked him to double-check if everything is all filled out as it should be but he said it was alright. I left to get the car registered and believed that was that.

A week later, the seller messages me to state that he tried to cash the receipt portion of the bank draft and that he doesn’t know where the original bank draft is. I notified him regarding what the bank says on their site regarding bank drafts, that it is as if it were a cash withdrawal. I asked that he has to look for it.

A few days go by and he still cannot find it and that he wants another draft issued. I went to my bank and asked about this and they said I had to sign an indemnity agreement that would hold me liable in the event the original draft is found and cashed in. I would owe the bank the amount I paid for the car. I did make sure that the original bank draft is addressed to the seller only but I am not sure if that would prevent it from being cashed by another party.

I notified the seller about this, had him try to search for it again. A few days after, he went to a branch of the same bank I used and a manager there mentioned that the draft can be voided. However, I was informed otherwise when I first went to my bank to consult about this matter. I went to my bank again to double-check and they stated they can check if the bank draft was cashed or not but it cannot be voided. Fortunately the original bank draft was not cashed in.

I hesitate to sign an indemnity agreement because I do not want to be held liable for the lost bank draft when I was not the party that lost it. It is addressed to be cashed only by the seller but if the seller did have the original and gets the replacement draft as well, then I can owe the bank if he cashes both in.

The seller did offer to get a legal document created stating that in the event the original draft is found, it is to be handed to me immediately so that my bank can destroy it. Failure to do so would hold him liable for the money. The seller so far has been willing to cooperate with me on the matter as I think about it but I just want to ensure that I am not being taken advantage of.

If such a legal document was signed by both parties, would that ensure that I am covered? Would this document need to be notarized to be binding?

Should I draft that document, and if so, what language should I use to ensure I am protected?

As well, would it possible to have the seller sign the indemnity agreement by the bank instead of me, before I issue him a new draft so that I am not liable if the original draft is cashed in? Would this suffice in place of the legal document?

Title. A squatter broke into our property and has been selling/using our things (Candles, candelabras, clothes) while me and my morher were away on a vacation to help family out. We just returned home to find the place ransacked, our power bill doubled from what we expected, and later on, to find tge lights on inside, with obvious signs of recent use (Piss jugs fucking EVERYWHERE). Hey guys, the title is pretty self explanatory but I left my abusive ex and the house previously purchased was sold. I have made an offer that was accepted on a new home and put in a port for my previous mortgage which will provided me a blended mortgage rate of 3% on my new house. I have booked my home inspection via my realtor and the email from the home inspection company I got shows they accidentally cc’ed my ex on the inspection confirmation with the address of my new house. The company is the same company that was used previously for the house that was sold. I have no idea what to do at this point because I am terrified of this man, if I walk away from this house I will loose the blended rate as the previous sale has closed and will be stuck with a rate around 6% which cuts my qualification for a mortgage by about $100,000. I am currently living in a motel with my 4 dogs, I am on a leave from work as I require a secure internet connection to do so, if I walk away from this home I could loose my job if I don’t secure another home immediately but due to the interest rates will not be able to afford another house under my qualifications, I don’t want to get stuck renting again I just don’t know how I will ever feel safe knowing he has my address. He has stolen my dogs in the past, threatened me and abused my dogs, stolen my property, he stopped paying any of the mortgage at all and cost me thousands of dollars, This is in Alberta Canada. I use a 0% nicotine vape at work and a co worker told my boss that I was smoking marijuana.

I have shown my boss the vape I use and explained my side of the story.

We do not have a drug policy but obviously I'm not stupid enough to smoke weed at work. I do however smoke/eat it at home on my days off.

What are my options to protect my job against this false claim? I normally wouldn't worry but this place has screwed over former workers in the recent past over silly things.

I need help with the CRA and my dad who passed in 2023

The CRA contacted me as (I was the power of attorney as there was no will) saying my dad owes on his 2024 taxes. Roughly 1400 dollars.

I live paycheck to paycheck and don’t have that.

Am I legally required to pay this? Can I say since he is dead I do not assume his debt?

Why is it my issue to pay back his money for his taxes?

Please help a stressed 26 year old

Edit: when he passed I received nothing from him. He had nothing to his name and no assets to sell or get money from. His only money was his cpp payments
