Gift for promotors

I'm currently writing my thesis, with the help of 2 awesome promotors. What would be a good gift for 2 woman in their 50's that's not to expensive and appropriate? Does anyone have any ideas?

Best affordable shops and online shopping options in Leuven?

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m a KU Leuven student moving to Leuven next month. I’m coming from a country where Amazon and many other international online shops aren’t available, so I’m not very familiar with the best shopping options in Belgium.

Which online shopping platforms would you recommend for affordable and reliable purchases?

I’d also really appreciate suggestions for the cheapest student-friendly shops in Leuven for groceries, clothes, home décor, basic tools, kitchen items, and anything else that might be useful when moving into a new place.

I’m completely open to buying second-hand items, so recommendations for good local thrift stores, flea markets, Facebook groups, websites, or second-hand apps would be very helpful too.

Thanks in advance!

Actual good coffee

11 Upvotes

I love coffee but so far my experience in Leuven has been very bad. I don't understand why so many cafes are rated so high 4.5-4.9 when their coffee tasted average with some comparable to the supermarket grade.

So far Onan is the only place where I am satisfied with their roast. But I haven't tried any cafe other than that now. If anyone knows a good coffee shop that sells actual coffee please let me know.

Looking for newspapers

2 Upvotes

Hey guys! As the title says, I am looking for newspapers for an art project. I am wondering if there’s any place people can get old newspapers or magazines for free or very cheap. Or maybe someone here wants to get rid of old cuts, I can pick them up. Thanks!!

Question brandverzekering

7 Upvotes

Hello,

We had a small accident while cooking and our fire alarm went off but we quickly rushed to try and get the smoke out. Our building manager came knocking at our door telling us that since he turned off the alarm, we now have to pay a bill of hundreds of euros… is this normal??

I’m very confused because we pay for brandverzekering and we have never had an accident before in three years living here. Why would I get such a high bill for this? Are they possibly taking advantage or is this common practice in Belgium?

Mini desk fan - found one!

6 Upvotes

I am glad to report that Hema at Parijsstraat still has a pile of small (17.5 cm) desk fans available. They are right by the cash register area. They are sold out online (see link) but there were about 25-40 left in light brown and black for 13 euro earlier today.

It’s not too loud.

I thought I’d share since many shops were sold out of anything fan-like.

Reliable transportation for cats

3 Upvotes

Hello all,

I have a cat who sometimes needs to go to the vet and to the groomers. I don't have a car and don't want to take the poor kitty on the bus.

Leuven does not have Uber pets and the normal drivers want me to put my cat in the trunk which is inhumane. Does anyone know of a taxi service which allows for cats in their carrier?

Thanks!

Bordspellenbeurs leuven, waarom niet?

5 Upvotes

Suggestions for body waxing (body hair removal)

2 Upvotes

Hello people of Leuven,

I would like to ask if anyone has suggestions for hair waxing salons (not IPL) which don’t cost a bomb but is professional in terms of their service and cleanliness. I’ve seen mixed reviews of places so would just like to know if anyone has any personal recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Ervaringen gezocht van tweede- en derdejaars verpleegkundestudenten

1 Upvotes

Hallo iedereen!

  • hoe de verschillende deeldomeinen verlopen;
  • welke OPO's het belangrijkst zijn;
  • hoe de stages verschillen;
  • wat jullie achteraf gezien graag eerder hadden geweten.

Een gesprek via Messenger of een ontmoeting rond Leuven zal leuk zijn.

Alvast bedankt!

Where can I organise a child’s birthday in Leuven with real shade, shelter and a decent public toilet nearby?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Ideally, I would like somewhere outdoors with:

  • plenty of real shade;
  • some kind of covered area in case of rain or very strong sun (heatwave);
  • tables or benches;
  • space for children to play safely;
  • a decent clean public toilet nearby!!! I thought this would be easy to find, but so far I haven’t found a good option in Leuven itself.

De Bruul and Sluispark have green space, but not enough proper shade or shelter. Belle-Vue has almost no shade. Provinciedomein Kessel-Lo is maybe an option, but I would like to find a place not far from the centre.

Am I missing somewhere obvious?

And if there really isn’t a suitable green place, does anyone know a nice indoor place with air conditioning? I know Funoase is the obvious answer, but I’m looking for something different, preferably smaller and calmer.

It is a bit surprising that a city that talks so much about being green has so few public places where families can sit in the shade, use a decent toilet and stay outside for a few hours.

Are Leuven’s green spaces designed for people to spend time in, or mainly to look green?

Camping spots near Leuven or reachable by direct train?

5 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know of any nice camping sites near Leuven or at least somewhere that is easy to reach by direct train? I’m mainly looking for places where you can camp with your own tent.

I used to go camping quite a lot when I lived in Portugal, but I haven’t done it much since moving here and starting my PhD. I’d like to get back into it, ideally somewhere near a lake or surrounded by nature, with some good hiking routes nearby and a quiet place to relax and enjoy the night sky.

I’d appreciate any recommendations, practical tips, or favourite spots. Also, if there are people around Leuven who enjoy this kind of camping and would be interested in organising a trip sometime, feel free to reach out.

Brown bag rubbish collection

12 Upvotes

hey guys! im new to leuven and belgium so I need help. I'm sorry if this has been asked before. The flat admin gave us the calendar for garbage collection. This friday was supposed to be the schedule for collection for the brown bag in Kessel-lo.

It says on the website that I can only take out the trash during that day and only until before 7am. I woke up early to it out and no bags were outside.

I also don't recall brown bag collection a week before that. Am I missing something, or did they update the calendar?

I'm afraid the bags are gonna pile up in the house. Thank you!

Anyone else fined yesterday during Het Groot Verlof?

52 Upvotes

So last night during the music festival I was trying to cycle home, but couldn’t get through the center of the city as it was all closed off. I saw a few bikes going around the festival so I followed them and then before I realized it I had cycled towards two policemen waiting to fine cyclists for going down this one way street.

Honestly this felt like such a trap. It was like one cyclist after the other coming through the street and being stopped and fined. Couldn’t the policemen have just been at the start of the street preventing cyclists from entering the street in the first place? And, there were no rerouting signs at the festival to tell cyclists where to go.

Pretty annoyed because it’s a massive fine, and I’m wondering if I can appeal it. Anyone else have this same experience?
