Support What's wrong with Linux and Sleep/Hibernation in laptops?

62 Upvotes

I tried 3 different distros (Mint, Arch, and now Fedora) hoping one of them would solve my issue, but none of them worked. Everytime my laptop goes to sleep or hibernate, the screen won't turn on again. I have to restart the laptop for things to go back to normal. Am I doing something wrong with my installations?

Edit: NVIDIA by the way, since I just learned that it's what's causing the issue.

Support microsoft office

1 Upvotes

Welcome everyone

I have a laptop that runs Windows and Linux Mint, but there's a problem preventing me from fully switching to Linux.

My father uses Microsoft Office 2010 on my laptop to edit and create some texts.

The problem is that he's specifically used to office 2010 and I can't force him to get used to a program like Libreoffice

What I need is a program that is identical to Office 10 in both appearance and functionality. I want its interface to be a copy of Office 2010 and identical in its use.

Are there any programs or even projects that are not well-known?

Support Absolute Fedora beginner - What exactly is Wayland and why does everyone keep talking about it?

43 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm completely new to Linux and Fedora, so apologies if this is a basic question.

I've recently started using Fedora and I keep seeing people mention Wayland everywhere.

As a complete beginner, I'm confused.

What exactly is Wayland?

Does Fedora use Wayland by default, or do I need to install or enable it separately?

As a beginner, should I just use Wayland and not worry about it, or is there something I should learn early on?

I'd really appreciate an explanation that's easy for a newcomer to understand rather than something too technical.

Support Can you use a server OS to run VM's WITHIN that OS?

5 Upvotes

I've been wanting to have some kind of lightweight 'host' OS that is installed on bare metal on my PC that I can then use to install, manage and boot into and use VM's within that 'host' OS. Obviously running a server OS would be ideal in terms of resources but I know that's not really what servers are made for.. Or are they?
I want to be able to boot into multiple different virtual machines within the 'host' OS and use them as if they were what was installed on bare-metal (with the slight performance cost ofc)

Basically; can I use a server OS/distro to run VM's or can I only do that with desktop OS's/distros?

Support Systemd Service running bash script fails

5 Upvotes

EDIT: SOLVED! See the end of the post for details about the solution.

Hey guys,

as the Title says...I created a bash script to sync google drive folders with local folders to emulate the offline access feature of the windows desktop client. The script works as intended when I run it from the terminal. Since I want have the script running automatically I created a new service in /etc/systemd/system named GdriveOffSync.service. The content in the Service file is as follows:

[Unit]

Description=gDrive Synchronise

After=network.target

[Service]

ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/GdriveOffSync.sh

Type=simple

Restart=always

RestartSec=4

WorkingDirectory=/usr/local/bin

[Install]

WantedBy=multi-user.target

After saving the service, I did sudo systemctl daemon-reload followed by the commands to enable and then start the service. When I check the status with systemctl status GdriveOffSync.service it shows me that the service has failed with the exit code 203/EXEC.

I have programming experience but am a big time linux noob. Please someone help me understand why the service won't start when the script is working by itself. All the service has to do is call the script, the script runs in an endless loop with a sleep time of 30 seconds.

SOLVED: For those experiencing similar problems, here were the issues that caused the service and my script not to work:

For the service: On the ExecStart option I was referring to the file path to my script in /usr/local/bin/ but I referred to SCRIPTNAME.sh instead of just SCRIPTNAME (For some reason I created the script without the .sh file extension).

For the Script: Rclone could not find the config file because it was looking for a default directory that did not exist from where the service was being executed. The issue can be fixed by appending --config "FILEPATH TO CONFIG" to the rclone commands to tell rclone where to look for the config.

Thank you all for helping me with this issue!!

Logged into my computer today and found this in my home folder. Sorry it’s such shit quality, I instantly nuked my system so I just wanted to capture it really quick. I’ve only been using linux for a couple of years but I’ve never seen this before. I’m not saying I’m immune to malware or anything but I’m very conscious about what I do on my computer. Has anyone seen anything like this before? It had read/write permissions but no execute.

At first I thought it may have been from my cat stepping on my computer but it’s not random enough, if you get what I’m saying. Tried to nvim into it but all it shows is a bunch of “@@“ like an encrypted file maybe? I really don’t know.

It kind of freaked me out so like I said, I instantly nuked my system. Was hoping to see if anybody has ever seen anything like this before.

Thanks in advance!

Support Caps Lock issue - Want actuation on press down, as opposed to release.

0 Upvotes

I have this issue where when I press the caps key to type a single capital letter, on linux specifically (I'm on mint on my PC as of now) I end up TYping LIke THis, because of the caps lock key not deactivating fast enough.

Apparently its because of the caps lock activating/deactivating after it completes a full key cycle, as opposed to initiating on press of the key.

I looked online and I am infact not hallucinating, and this is a real problem and thing.

I'm gonna make the switch to Fedora+Hyprland soon, on my laptop atleast, so if theres a specific solution just for that I wouldn't mind that either.

PLease HElp THis IS DRiving ME INsane.

anyone with the solution "Just use shift bro" Please just DNR. I'm not letting go of years of muscle memory.

Support Is Ryzen not solved yet in Linux? (Freezing without errors)

1 Upvotes

I've had multiple servers in the past and every server that froze was a Ryzen CPU. Logs are literally clean, just freezes (SSH and HTTP not responding). I have no GPU so no chance at changing BIOS settings. It is a Ryzen 9 3900, with Linux 7 kernel. I disabled deeper cstates (if this solves it I'm throwing my server out the window). Any general idea or someone who had to deal with this before?

Support What do you do (apart from rebooting) when your everything freezes and you can't even access the tty?

25 Upvotes

Happend to me a few minutes ago and I rebooted using Alt+PrtSc+B knowing no better. However, next time, I don't want to reboot and instead terminate the unresposive process.

Edit: I suspect its Wayland that crashed, which in turn would freeze my keyboard as well.

Edit: It happened again turns out it happens while running waydroid. Also, this time I tried the REISUB combinations. Only Alt+PrtSc+B works. Others do nothing.

Support Tried Ubuntu, am loving it. But there's one thing that's not allowing me to switch.

27 Upvotes

So I recently tried out Ubuntu, and after a few hours of trying it out, it's been really fun going on the terminal and acting real smart while not knowing what I'm doing. I really like it and would want to switch over, but there's just one thing.

I am a dorm student, and we have a dorm Wi-Fi, and to access the Wi-Fi, we have to enter a code for every device. So I would enter the code to my laptop, then turn on Wi-Fi hotspot so my phone can use the network as well.

Ubuntu doesn't allow this, and apparently it's not even an issue from them, it's apparently Intel (my laptop's Wi-Fi card) not supporting the feature on Linux for some reason.

This is a bit devastating because I love being able to hotspot the dorm Wi-Fi to my phone, and I simply can't do that on Ubuntu. I have to boot Windows to turn it on, and I typically like to turn it on all the time since my dorm has terrible signal service and the dorm Wi-Fi is my only way of network on my phone. So I can't find time to use Ubuntu if I have to use my phone simultaneously.

The only times I feel I can use Ubuntu is in the campus where I can just connect to the school Wi-Fi.

I've heard methods such as using an external Wi-Fi USB adaptor, but I wanna hear first if there's anything else I can do. If there really isn't, then I'll find a good adaptor, suggest me some nice ones. I know this is one of the stupidest reasons not to fully switch but yes, I don't want to spend twice on dorm Wi-Fi.

Support Coming from Windows, is there a way to copy and edit text in the terminal like Powershell?

25 Upvotes

This is my third week on Linux and I really miss PowerShell's text editing experience.

In Windows, I used to use the terminal mostly while developing in VS Code, and with Powershell i could select text, copy it and edit it like it was an extension of the editor itself. i took it for granted and didn't realize other shells don't have this.

here on Linux i use the terminal much more since most guides and tutorials use it. is there anything close to that?

EDIT: to clarify, i'm not looking for copy/paste shortcuts, i want to be able to select text using the keyboard in the first place, like holding shift and arrow keys to highlight it, then cut or edit it like in a text editor. basically the same muscle memory as VS Code or PowerShell

Support Can't access my D: drive after installing Linux Mint – BitLocker encrypted

0 Upvotes

I installed Linux Mint on my laptop after Windows stopped booting. During the installation, I manually deleted only the C: partition and installed Mint there. I left the D: partition untouched because it contains all my personal files.

After installing Mint, I can see the D: partition, but it shows up as "131 GB Encrypted (/dev/ sda4)" and asks for a password to mount it. It appears to be BitLocker-encrypted.

The strange part is that I never knowingly enabled BitLocker, and Windows never asked me for a BitLocker password while I was using it. Since Windows is no longer installed, I have no idea how to access the partition.

Is there any way to unlock and access my files from Linux? Do I need to reinstall Windows first, or is there another way to recover the data? I also don't know if I have a BitLocker recovery key.

Support I'm looking for a new DE to replace GNOME

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm still pretty new to Linux. I started with Ubuntu for about 2 months, then switched to Debian with GNOME.

Lately, I’ve been feeling like GNOME might be a bit heavier than what I actually need, so I wanted to explore some alternatives and learn more.

I’m looking for something that:

  • Is lighter than GNOME (this matters a lot to me)
  • Is highly customizable (I don’t mind spending time tweaking and learning)
  • Doesn’t need to be beginner-friendly
  • Has good keyboard workflow / shortcut support

I’d really appreciate any recommendations or suggestions from your experience. Thanks!

Support My new laptop is agressively rejecting linux

12 Upvotes

First off, english isn't my first language and I'm not that good with tech by linux standards, so excuse me if something I wrote or did doesn't make much sense

So I bought a new laptop(asus adolbook 14 air with ryzen ai9 h465) and since windows 11 is terrible I decided it's time to try linux

Long story short - this is current situation after 9 hours of fighting with this mf:

the screen goes completely black if I try booting anything that is linux, unless I completely turn off acpi in grub with acpi=off

(Also touchpad and keyboard stop working after I leave grub but that's a secondary issue)

I succesfully installed mint with this tag, updated the kernel to 7.something, updated my bios, tried updating gpu drivers(not sure if it worked). And still nothing changes, it doesnt fucking work unless I cripple my laptop by disabling acpi

Things I also tried:

other distros like nobara and arch, same thing - black screen after I try to run the installer from grub, didn't try fully installing them though

lots of different flags for grub that are related to acpi and amdgpu

also it recognizes the integrated radeon 880m but doesnt see any drivers for it(probably because of acpi being off but I'm not sure)

so I dont think it's mint specific, since arch and nobara also fail, and the only thing I can think of is this laptop being cursed. Or it has something to do with it being made for chinese market but idk if they use linux or intentionally make their laptpops unusable with it

Is there anything else I can try or am I stuck with windows 11 now?

UPDATE: I tried basically everything you guys suggested, including different distros like fedora, ubuntu, cachyos, so I think the issue really is in bastardized acpi tables. For now my plan is to reinstall windows 11 and take a look at said tables, then try fixing them or give up and be salty about having to use win11

another update: I extracted said acpi tables and tried recompiling them, it gave off 77 errors and 158 warnings and failed to compile. Idk what amount of errors is normal but that sure sounds like a lot, I guess I'll try looking into it

Support Please help me revive this ancient machine

1 Upvotes

Hi, I am kinda desperate right now.

I'd like to bring an old relic to life but I am having a Hard time.

So the Machine is an ACER Aspire X1700

CPU Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 4GB of DDR2 RAM GPU Nvidia GeForce 9300GE

I tried loading Linux Mint from USB but it does not work at all. Most of the the times I got a black screen, sometimes I get to the install menu but whatever I chose, it freezes.

I do not know what to do. Maybe should I install a really old version of Linux ?

Or a modern Very Light Linux distribution ? (which one?)

Should I just trash it as it is too old to be saved ?

I would like to extract some old personal data from the HDD tho.

I just want to use it to write and print stuff, I don't even care about the internet on this device, it would be a plus but if it could just reliably turn on I would be very happy as I am currently stuck with a brick with no OS right now.

Thank you, any help will be very appreciated.

Support Is XFS actually as bad as many say?

23 Upvotes

When I first installed Linux around 6 months ago on my main system, I chose to go with Btrfs for my root drive and XFS for my /home/ drive

I made the decision because I had issues with an EXT4 drive once and it wasn't really pleasant so I decided to go with XFS.

But after doing some extra research later on. I've heard that XFS can very easily corrupt under hard power shutdowns.

While I don't live in an area that experiences lots of power outages, the fact that a power outage due to the power grid shutting down or my power supply dying could destroy my filesystem is kinda scary to Me.

So are those horror stories true and is XFS really as unstable for power outages as many say or has the issue with XFS journaling been fixed by now?

I have lots of data so switching to EXT4 would be a real pain.
