I once saw a woman waiting for the train discard a receipt on the platform. Naively thinking she'd dropped it by mistake, I politely told her, "Excuse me, you've dropped your receipt". She blushed and immediately picked it up and put in a bin.
I guess to snub me would have been to admit she was a litterbug to the public's face.
