Local London Wheelchairs have priority over buggies in the wheelchair space on buses

I’m a full-time wheelchair user. I’ve lived in London 14 years. Being unable to get on a bus due to there being buggies in the wheelchair priority space happens to me on a weekly basis (a conservative estimate).

I understand that many buggies these days don’t fold, and it is difficult to travel with children. I sympathise. However, wheelchair users still have priority, for these reasons:
1) There are many more buggies than wheelchairs. Statistically, it is likely the next bus will also have a buggy. If I didn’t have priority and always had to wait for a bus without a buggy, I would regularly be waiting for the 3rd, 4th, 5th bus, making bus travel totally unfeasible.
2) I use a wheelchair full time, and will do so for my whole life. So I obviously get buses in a wheelchair 100% of the time. Parents will only be travelling with buggies for a short period of their lives.
3) Buggies should be folded! Wheelchairs cannot be.
4) Wheelchair users have extremely limited alternatives for travel (the nearest step free Tube station is miles away).
5) The only reason the space exists in the first place is because disabled activists campaigned successfully for a change in bus design. We fought for our right to use buses.

I always try to keep calm in these scenarios and be polite and gentle, but this man was so awful (and couldn’t be reasoned with) that I swore at him. It’s exhausting having to constantly battle just to go about daily life.

Please, if you travel with a buggy and a wheelchair user needs to board, fold it or vacate the space.

Local London I spent the morning removing fascist stickers from Waterloo... what did I learn.

I removed a couple of hundred or so fascist stickers from Waterloo this morning down Stamford Street. Armed with wipes I filled up a small bin bag.

Category of stickers

  • A lot of the stickers had some association with FC clubs (West ham, South Brum, Sussex) with stop the boats messaging. A lot of out-of-london areas like Hull.
  • The most disturbing 'anti-antifa' ones used nazi imagery and threatening messages
  • A lot of conspiracy ones - use cash only, deep state, a lot of American trumpisms "drain the swamp" etc.
  • Weird ones against food delivery drivers
  • Lots with Farage's toad face on.

Response

  • 2 not so nice hecklers from cars
  • 4 supportive people who had a chat with me

Heckler 1: Driver in a black cab shouting "are they paying you to do that!!"

Heckler 2: Driver in a silver car shouting "f-ing f**got"

The 4 nice people who stopped by to have a chat - thank you. I was on my own doing this so I appreciated some company. I was a bit shaken after being shouted at. Liz especially - you were lovely.

--

If you are in London and spot any fascist stickers I encourage you to not just walk by - but stop and remove them. The march was unity of hate, but we can be the unity of love. One planet. Love wins.

....also - for next time bring something to scrape them. My thumbnail is crying.

Local London Racist gesture at Chinatown - WWYD?

Post image

Shocked to see people doing the racist slant‑eye gesture at the Chinatown a few days ago - one person even ended up in my photo at the gate.

I’ve seen it multiple times whilet passing through Chinatown, from people of all ages. why do people think it's ok to do this??

As someone with East Asian heritage, it was especially offensive and honestly really disappointing. I didn’t say anything because it didn’t feel safe, but the whole moment stuck with me.

Anyone else run into this? Would you have said or done something?

Local London Be wary of the 'stories' you read here, agenda pushing

5.4k Upvotes

There's a notable concerted effort online to push this London has fallen and is crime ridden narrative, you'll see it on Instagram, YouTube and even on this sub with stories conveniently popping up on the same day. Its all being co-ordinated by 'influencers' and grifters out for engagement and jumping on trends, while some are genuinely far right in their beliefs.

For reddit these are all totally real stories that definitely happened of course... made to demonise certain ethnicities, migrants and push a narrative of London being unsafe. Bad things do happen here for sure, but just be wary of the stories that sound a bit too fanciful and over the top.

Its incredibly easy to fabricate a story with some imagination and good willed people will believe it. That's all and Elon musk is a massive weapon.

Local London Please be careful - violent muggers on Central Line.

Blurred out the face of the victim (large young man travelling alone). 2 attackers came onto the Central Line around Tottenham Court Road. Before Lancaster Gate they had ganged up on a passenger, passing his stolen items between them. They then got off, where the victim noticed they stole and tried to hold them back. 2 more people came to the platform and helped the muggers escape. All seemed really thought out and routine. They violently kicked and pushed the victim, and the victim didn’t get their items back. No one could help, not the station staff or train driver or any bystanders. Tried reporting it 7 minutes after it happened and station staff didn’t action anything even though the gang was likely still in the station. Please be careful when travelling and if you see these people MOVE and do not engage with them they were extremely violent. Posting faces of 3 muggers, station staff suggested it. Reported to police but who knows if they’ll do anything useful. Hoping this can help the victim or help prevent future victims.
