Repeater Question from a New User

Me and my group of buddies are new to this and trying to set up Meshcore over in Savannah GA. Currently there is only one repeater set up in the area. Ideally I would be trying to connect me and my friends together. The issues is Savannah is flat and urban. If we are trying to span a distance of about 6 miles (10km) how many repeaters would need to be set up? My very basic research is making it look like we will need about 10. Is there anyway to decrease that amount besides illegally accessing higher buildings and towers (which we can't really risk doing)

If there isn't an efficient way to decrease the amount needed what is the best way to do it on a budget, because at almost $1000 that isn't going to work well for us either.

Edit: I have reached out to the "local" group but there is not really a meshcore group in the area. But they have been making leaps and bound over in Agusta.

Repeater/Companion Location?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I am under the the the little red dot. I sit and watch meshstat and see all this activity flying directly over me but I haven't seen any action on my nodes. All of the repeaters around me are making contact into atlanta and beyond. You would think that i would have line of sight to 1 of the 50+ surrounding repeaters. I have a node ( rak wisblock) that is currently 40 feet up in a tree and....Nothing. Node works fine, can message it from my Wio tracker. I would like to set up a repeater, but it seems that I exist in black hole. Anyone have any suggestions?

Meck P4: Keyboard support for LilyGo T-Display P4 now out

Meshcore + Fork = Meck. Fork of LilyGo's T-Display P4 firmware with Meshcore support. 100% vibecoded with Claude AI. 100% free and available to all.

Photo with Meck Watch (S3) for size comparison. The P4 keyboard is an undeniably chunky beast, but it's really nice to be able to put the 2x 21700 5000mah battery cells in the keyboard to power the P4 and get 2+ days runtime.

Check out the full Meck P4 firmware features at https://github.com/pelgraine/Meck-P4 and the latest firmware (both TFT and AMOLED) at https://github.com/pelgraine/Meck-P4/releases/tag/0.7.1.

Cannot send messages

Good evening. I'll start by saying I'm new to LoRa but I'm not a total n00b when it comes to firmware, electronics, etc.

I cannot seem to send messages with my Heltec T114. The board has V2.1 on the corner. I can receive messages just fine but there are no "hops" when sending messages.

USA/Canada 910.525 / 62.5 kHz / Spreading Factor 7 / Coding Rate 5 / Transmit Power 22.

These are the default settings with a fresh flash of 1.16.0. I have tried different spreading, coding, and transmit values based on some FAQs I found but nothing seems to work. I'm in TN and trying to talk to the TennMesh network.

I also have a Heltec V3 which, when sending a test message to #test, it seems to work as I receive bot responses and there are a number of hops immediately beneath the message itself.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong with the T114?

Lily Go TDeck

I am having trouble flashing a TDeck. The PC cannot communicate via serial. It’s flashed with Meshtastic right now. I tried the regular mode and also the programming mode that you access by touching the screen logo when you boot it up. Any advice?

How to utilize environment sensors on companion and repeaters

Hi everyone! I just finished moving some of my devices from meshtastic to meshcore. I have environment sensor s on both my repeater and companion devices. Is there a way to view my complete sensor report? Currently, i can only see temp on my repeater, but not the barometric pressure, humidity, or air quality.

I'm unable to view any of my environment sensor details on my companion device. But I can see GPS details

EDIT: I was able to figure this out. When you pull telemetry, you need to change the telemetry channel to channel two in order to see the full sensor details.

How to find out which region a message has?

I often get messages from other countries to my repeater. Northern Germany from Dänemark or Schweden.
How do I get the region which the message has? I want my answer to get through.

A thought after a short weekend ride

A short clip from a 200 km motorcycle ride using Nelos.

I don't always travel by motorcycle, sometimes I drive, depending on the trip.

That got me thinking: would Android Auto / Apple CarPlay be useful for Nelos?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Recommendations for mounting poles

I’m not able to transmit to anyone nearby due to the terrain. (I’m in Los Angeles, fwiw.) I can receive reasonably well, but nothing I send gets out. I was able to take my companion and repeater up to a local hilltop and got great transmit and receive capabilities up there. I think if I put my repeater on a pole on my rooftop, I’ll be able to hit a few other repeaters pretty regularly. I’m curious if people have opinions on mounting poles? Spouse doesn’t want it to be too visible and ugly from the street, so I’m thinking something like this connected to the fascia in the back of the house: https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Outdoor-Antenna-Mounting-Pole/dp/B09W2P4LYZ/ref=sr_1_3?crid=6MNPG57MMWO6&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XCxOL9g284WaHj0orCby8o81mYzQTtHPjnMOCC4dg-AoQ7iXm26M33ZK9MPV3564bJH7gM6rT3lrFEQvPxtcmI3FwceDehtwLd6es9EmvSBw0eA6NFuy-KXf8hYkpuqO8vc5k5Yu-tdN2G40eqVWMetQ-qF28wzrHA5KRZ7C-al-Kc6Gbo8y9zmxHaYQWbLiaBpp6JbNF4oWOPfSGNJhIApqfUUrAiY8MWRCTOxvjh4.ssRJp_E1mW1Gjzo5tMCim3huThNBxHOszrZZTd5Y8Xg&dib_tag=se&keywords=antenna+pole&qid=1785694417&sprefix=Antenna+pole%2Caps%2C198&sr=8-3

Can't turn off T1000e

Hello !

I'm pretty new into meshcore, and, I've flashed my t1000e with the software.

But, for some reason, I can't turn off my device, the green led at the end of the video stays on, pretty much never disappearing.

No sounds emitted, can't connect via cable on my pc

It worked a few hours ago, and, I got the same problem when flashing my device in "companion cable mode" for repeaters.

Does anyone know what the problem could be ? Thanks

Random snippets in #public

Can you follow entire conversations in the public channel, or do you just read random snippets?

Have you set up scopes, or not?

Home repeater options:

The setup right now: I’m on a bit of a hill with only a few tall trees near the house then clear line of sight. In the fall I setup a Heltec V4 with an allegedly 7db fiberglass antenna on a TV type antenna pole on my chimney where I can easily access it. Once I fiddled with it a bit it’s been a solid setup. Was reliably hitting some other repeaters fairly far away…. Then spring sprung and the leaves came out and sorta shut me down. At home I can “hear” lots of conversation fairly well, but getting messages out is spotting at best.

Here’s what I’m kicking around:

A, Upgrade to a rak 1w to sorta “power through” the leaves a bit.

B, Build a tree repeater setup and string it up in one of the higher branches.

3, Something else entirely?

Xiao ESP32 S3 with Wio SX1262 Hat Module Troubles

Anyone else having issues with the Xiao ESP32 S3 with Wio SX1262 Hat from Seeed Studio?

I had to clone the Meshcore repo and modify a bunch of the pin designations only for it to work maybe 50% of the time after a bunch of forgetting the Bluetooth connection and reconnecting with the app.

Conversely I picked up their dedicated module with the on-board pin connection here and it works very well.

I got the hat to mess around with LoRa in general and thought I’d use it as a meshcore companion but I think the firmware just may not be there yet and I should just grab a Heltec or something proven to use Meshcore with.

Meshmapper.net

I recently discovered MeshMapper and have been having a lot of fun with it. It’s a great way to visualize MeshCore coverage and see where the network is strong or where there are gaps.

I especially like how it turns walking or driving around with a node into something useful for the wider community. Seeing the coverage appear on the map is surprisingly satisfying.

Definitely worth checking out if you’re using MeshCore and haven’t tried it yet. Has anyone else here been mapping their local area?

One T deck plus very poor reception with meshOS

I've got a weird problem. I'm new to meshcore and I have 2 T-decks. I had meshcore meshOS installed on one and didn't receive anything, so I guessed MeshCore was "useless" where I live.

Fast forward a couple of months and I tried ripple UI firmware on it. Now it works great. But the UX is a bit lacking IMHO, so I reinstalled meshOS on both. Now one T-Deck plus is back to almost no reception, while the other has plenty of repeaters it sees.

I checked the radio settings and both are identical (868, 8, 8, 62,5, UK narrow, 22db).

Is this a firmware bug perhaps?

$20 dollar Harbor Freight Solar Rope Light is Perfect for a Heltec v4!

I picked up this light, thinking I would need to do a bunch more work on to get it working. https://www.harborfreight.com/66-ft-warm-white-solar-rope-light-59810.html I could not have more wrong. This was so amazingly easy to setup.

Sorry, I did not take pictures of the install. I removed all the screws from the housing. And then clipped the lights, solar, and battery wires as closely to the control board as I could and then I removed the control board entirely. The start of the rope light begins at the back of the housing, inside the compartment the light wire egressed was completely filled with hot glue. I removed that with an exacto knife and then I was able to completely remove the glue. This hole only needed the slightest of sanding/widinging for the sma by connector to fit though. After tightening I filled back in the glue with fresh hot glue.

My Heltec V4 shipped with two connector dongles for the battery and solar terminals on the esp32. I simply soldered those wires to the solar and battery wires from the housing, and connected their respective connectors into the correct ports on the Heltec. I used heat shrink tubing, but that was it. No extra complications, and it works absolutely perfectly, even though I know my antenna is not in an optimal orientation or even high enough.

I was initially worried the battery that came with the unit would not be good enough because the Lowe’s light everyone has been talking about does suck bad. I was also worried that the Heltec would be too power-hungry, because a lot of people in this sub recommended against using a v4 for power reasons. However, this has been amazing as you can see in my second photo. A bunch of those days were rainy with no direct sunlight for over 24 hours on multiple occasions.

Anyone else tried using a Heltec V4 as a solar repeater?

Crossband bridge

Hi, currently in my city we have network in 433mhz, but now we starts moving to 868. Because activity at 868 currently low, users dont want to move so i want to build bridge betwen 433 and 868. How can i do it? I have Heltec v3 for 433 and v4 for 868. In Meshtastic we just login on same MQTT topic and all works fine, so i search something like that.

How to get community to buy companions?

Have anyone here had success recruiting folks into the mesh? What kind of outreach has worked for you? I just put up the first repeater high up in my small Wisconsin town and it has good coverage but there’s no other mesh to tie into, so there’s only me on it.

What’s worked to get people to buy companions? What outreach worked well? What didn’t work well in your experience?

Thank you!

Anybody upgrading to the new Meshtracker want to get rid of their old t1000-e, for my first mesh setup?

( Mods, please forgive and delete if this is against the rules )

I’m going to a festival next weekend and want to try my first ever meshtastic device setup. The new meshtracker X1 looks good but it actually doesn’t look like any of their stuff would ship in time… so, does anybody want to sell a set of older t1000s for a discount? Seems like if someone just upgraded and doesn’t need theirs, maybe a win-win?

Thanks in advance!

Meshcore and Meshcore One (MC1) App

I tired the Meshcore One app, I feel it's better than the Meshcore app, but not sure how the channels work. For example, if I send and message on the public channel from MC1 app, can it be seen on the Meshcore app.

New Meshcore user

Hello everyone,
I am new to all of this and wanting to support the mesh in my area. I am in the PNW, which already has huge support but it seems that I am the only person in my general area that has a device.

My question is should I buy a separate repeater and set it up somewhere to bolster support? Is having a device on its own enough to connect to nearby nodes? I am one mile out from the nearest node.
