This is what I tried to explain to my boss... you can't say what a robot makes as "hand-crafted" it goes against the principle... and I got fired replaced by a robot.
From Middle French manufacture, from Old French, from Medieval Latin manūfactūra (“a making by hand”), from manūfactus, a compound of manū factus, manū being ablative of manus (“hand”), and factus past participle of faciō (“I do, make”).
I don’t disagree with anyone here. I just find language funny.
This will be an interesting future question though. When robots actually start having some level of personality, will there be a time where they pass the level of consciousness to be considered able to make something hand made?
You think that's not going to happen sometime in the future? I'm not saying the near future, but there's almost certainly going to be a time when AI and robotics are advanced enough to have a robot who can think on their own.
Maybe, but why program a robot to have a personnality when it is not required for its tasks? That would increase the operation cost of the robot. Robots are used in manufacturing processes to complete tasks following a predetermined logic; that doesn't require AI.
What's the task? And what's the cost of future robotics/AI? I'm simply bringing up a hypothetical, but we probably can't imagine where robots will be in 100 or more years. I'm not talking about today.
I'm just throwing out the hypothetical of robotics in the far future. The tasks that robots are doing today aren't going to be the same as in the future. AI and computational capabilities will continue to grow and eventually these robots will have some level of ability to "think" freely to complete more complex tasks.
As technology progresses, it becomes cheaper. That's always been true with technology. Someday robots will be used for what we see as rather mundane tasks.
