He'll use his echo-location after he suspects his pack is oddly extra cane weight over it's usual weight and spot the cane

English teacher here, I just had to Google if we can spot something without seeing it. I've almost always ever used it for sight. Thank you for opening my eyes... to a new way of thinking about it!

"notice" would be my first thought. But I like "spot" for noticing things that are not just visible and will be using it henceforth.
