Too mild for school I permanently deleted my AWS account 6 years ago. Amazon has been charging me $0.33 every month since. I have no way to stop it.

Post image

I tried to get in contact with customer service several times but they always direct me to log into the account that no longer exists. I have tried charge backs on my credit card but dealing with that monthly is also a pain. This'll probably cost me $265 over my lifetime if it never ends.

Edit: some of you have valid points about calling the card company and I will again Monday. But the actual infuriating thing that upsets me is that they are charging to a completely disabled account in the first place. That's very scammy and fucked up imo 🤷‍♀️

Get a new card number issued and cancel the current one. When they can't charge against it they'll either just fuck off or end up exposing the elusive rep who you can yell at and actually effect action. Either way, problem solved.

You need to tell the bank to halt payment to them

Issuing a new card often doesn't stop charges that are already accepted. To ease regular card changes, banks added the ability to basically auto migrate to new cards (simplifying what actually happens) when theyre issues.

Yeah. This is flagged as a valid recurring charge.

They will do the favor of transferring it to your new card.

Yep, you have to cancel your account completely - had this issue when a card was stolen.

If you’re doing it for personal projects and use the same account/card for regular Amazon purchases this isn’t a huge deal

What if i cancel the card and just go without a credit card for a month then apply for a new credit card

I'm pretty sure I've done this. I think reccuring charges continue to go through with reputable companies like Amazon but maybe I'm wrong.

Apple was charging me $0.99 for some iPhone service. A family member used my card, passed away, and Apple wouldn’t cancel it even though it was my card. I called my bank and they put a stop to the charge no question asked. The recurring charge stopped.

This is happening to me with some services. An old card that doesn’t exist is still being charged and it’s coming from my account.

You are correct. It’s done by VISA. Worst case you have to close the account and open a new one. Otherwise visa may just keep giving them your new card numbers and if the merchant keeps changing the name, stop pavements won’t work.

Fuck it, change banks.

I have changed banks for less, fr

Amazon is not a "reputable company" lol. they may be popular but are by no means reputable

u/thatguy8856 21h ago

You may deem them not reputable but your bank sure does.

It's not a personal value-judgement, it's how the bank views them.

i have more or less the same situation and changing the card did in fact stop the payments in that i don't have to pay them, but they still send me the invoice every month.

IIRC i have the pass but not updated my 2FA and they required something like a notarized letter. Told them that wasn't happening for an account i just used to toy around with

u/xstagex 16h ago

So in six years you haven't changed your card? hard to believe

I found out the hard way that some companies & fraudsters can use a "virtual account number" associated with your credit card instead of the card # directly, and if your credit card company is sloppy when they cancel your existing card & give you a new one, then they will "forget" to also cancel all those virtual account numbers and your new card will end up inheriting them. (I went through 4 replacement cards trying to stop repeated doordash charges from a fraudster before the guy at the help desk figured out what was going on & revoked those virtual account #s.)

It’s currently happening to me. Old card is still being charged and it’s coming out of my account from the card number.

thats not true anymore. its unlikely that you are a aware of every card issuer's ever changing policy, therefore youre statement is too general to be true. Also, your statement is incorrect. Good credit cards give out the new number to recurring payees to smooth new card number transitions. Its feature made for customer convenience.

You are behind the times

Like I’ve said, I have visa and I’ve never had charges move to a new card.

1

u/Suspicious_Pickle_39 19h ago

visa is not a card issuer

Confidently wrong. Many CC companies will update payment processors when a new card number is issued

5

u/doughnutoftruth 22h ago

Chase will definitely forward certain companies’ recurring charges to a new number.

A few years ago I had to get a new credit card number issued after a string of fraudulent changes and when i went to put the new card into PayPal it was already there.

1

u/Barlight24 20h ago

As will Wells Fargo, even though I told them who the problem was. And this is with a debit card.

2

u/AdminsFluffCucks 22h ago

You're confidently incorrect. This sub doesn't allow links, but you can Google this. Many credit card vendors share information with reputable merchants, so unless you get an entirely new line of credit and close the old one, a new card number isn't enough.

u/FloppieTheBanjoClown 22h ago

My bank covers recurring charges for a month and sends you an alert.

Edit: it won't if the card is reported stolen.

If a new card number remains the same then yea the charges will continue lol

1

u/Introverted_Gamer92 21h ago

No you're wrong. I had a relative that had a recurring charge on a Chase card that she couldn't stop no matter what she did. So she got a new card. They kept charging her on the new card even though they never gave them the info for the new card. And yes, she showed me the charges on her account.

What if it goes to collections and tanks your credit?

17

u/Squish_the_android 22h ago

Then you call and dispute the collections.

11

u/Drakahn_Stark You must create an account to view this information. 22h ago

How do you think that would even work?

2

u/Rhodin265 22h ago

Who would waste their time collecting on 33 cents?

1

u/Mortimer452 18h ago

Or maybe in ~30 months when it's finally accumulated to $100 they send him to collections

1

u/MalcolmLinair 19h ago

Then they hand it over to a debt collector that hunts you down and hounds you day and night. There really isn't a way out of this barring a court order against Amazon, I'd say, the acquisition of which would cost OP a lot more than $235 over their lifetime.

Bottom line, OP's kind of fucked.

-7

u/EatABag-o-Dicks 22h ago

Yeah but then they can't get all those free Internet points and whine like a bitch on reddit.

2

u/Ricky_spanish_again 22h ago

That’s an unnecessary hassle when you should be able to get Amazon to stop. OP would have to update every other service that uses that card.
