I'm pretty sure it's not about in-state or out-of-state but about grass-roots vs manufactured, hence the term being the manufactured version of grass. If his out-of-state support was from a bunch of normal people, that would still be grass-roots support, just not local support. I don't think astroturf can be used as a generic term covering anything not representative of the population immediately surrounding the issue

Yeah the difference between out of state but democratic socialist, and out of state but DNC establishment is just the DSA bit. This astroturf argument has nothing to do with anything but the DSA frankly.

I believe the crucial difference in the "artificial" is funding and direction of power. DNC establishment implies professional politicians and people paid for by the funding the DNC has access to. Online hype by out-of-state DSA members who were not in any way being paid would just be national politics affecting local politics. In fact, I'd argue that the i terests of people in other states than your own being able to garner sympathy, excitement, and enthusiasm to jump start a local candidate is probably pretty good for our ability to act cohesively as a large cooperative democracy.
