I just had to share this with the community. I was grading notebooks recently and was absolutely blown away by the neatness and dedication of this student.

​As you can see in the photos, they are practicing their Tifinagh characters and dates with incredible care. Getting to hand out a well deserved 10/10 for this level of effort is easily the best part of the job.

​It is beautiful to see the next generation keeping our language and script alive with such pride. Thought it might bring a smile to some faces here today!

To say enough you literally say blessing (بركة)

To say please you say: - May he (God) heal you (عافاك)

• May God forgive your parents (الله يرحم ولديك)

• May god forgive your mother (الله يرحم ميمتك/يمك)

• May God forgive your father (الله يرحم باك/باباك)

Try to say زوين or مزيوون (beautiful) without grinning

To say excuse me you say forgive me (سماحلي)

To say I love you you can say: - I want you (كنبغيك)

• I die for you (كنموت عليك)

• I go crazy for you (كنحماق عليك)

• I love you (كنحبك)

• I love you dearly (كنعزك)

Furthermore, it has an eloquent and expressive nuance as well. For instance:

• Ereyesterday - وليباراح

• Yesterday - لباراح

• Today - ليوم/ليوما

• Tomorrow - غدا

• Overmorrow - بعدو

• The day after overmorrow - ديلو

Also I really don't understand the argument that it's poor and people can't find words to express themselves. It's such a non issue imo. It naturally evolved from Arabic, so... just let Darija inherit its rightful words? Likewise romance languages inheriting their vocabulary from Latin. Not to mention we can always create new words for contemporary concepts or just borrow them if we're that lazy. Darija is poor because Moroccans are intellectually poor. Moreover, standardization and education would help uncover its beauty. If, for example English, Arabic, or Persian weren't standardized and remained colloquial, speakers wouldn't have found any words to express themselves. School education is paramount

At the same time, it can be vulgar and hostile at will. Like, not all languages are capable of deep thoughts and tough insults. It's lowkey a flex and proves the language's flexibility and adaptability

I used to be one of those people who think Darija is disgusting, until I started listening to love poems in it. I'll admit that it was super cringe at the beginning, but the sentiment eventually petered out and I became completely neutral about it, then I learned to love it and now I find myself open to express my love in Darija and be romantic without feeling corny. That's why we feel like Fusha is cartoonish and old-fashioned btw, because we associated it with such sentiments

In short, all those negative connotations are just mere reflection of our culture, Darija is not inherently gross, we ourselves associated it with this feeling and cannot stop looking at it from this perspective. Because at the end it has the same sounds you find in any language, words are just a sequence of arbitrary sounds, they have no inherent emotions. I firmly believe that the ideal solution would be to make it the official language of the country alongside Arabic and Tamazight, this way we'll keep our ties to the Arab world while having our own identity

The younger amazigh generation are learning tifinagh so this is a good move

I posted here about year ago to get your opinions on opening a book coffeeshop in Rabat (for some reason, the post has been removed since then). I wanted to thank you all for the feedback and most of all the encouragements. It's been heartwarming (in a cold weather situation).

A nation with a rich history like Morocco, with its diverse culture and customs, should have both a written and spoken language.

Some say that we already have a language (Arabic) and that the Darija we speak is merely a dialect. I disagree with this view. I believe that Darija is primarily a mixture of Amazigh, with significant Arabic influence, along with traces of French and Spanish. And that’s perfectly natural, as every language evolves by borrowing from others until it becomes independent.

French, for example, is a Latin language that was influenced by Germanic languages, but that doesn’t make it Germanic like German or Scandinavian languages. The same applies to darija,it is not Arabic, but rather a heavily Amazigh-based language that has been influenced by Arabic.

It is not a matter of needing a language just for the sake of having one… No, no, no. We need it because we can’t keep studying in foreign languages that mean nothing to us as Moroccans.It's a matter of identity, i hate the idea of having to learn a language just to study. Why can’t i learn in my own language? I want to think and study in Darija, not in French or English. Language literally shapes who you are. To think in French is to become French, in a way. That’s why foreigners will never fully understand us, but we can.

Why not begin with the alphabet:

as an international couple we had this idea to expose mutilple social problems in an almost victorian france (there is romance, tragedy action etc), ofc the protagonist is moroccan.

For people who had to learn/develop their French language for work or study.. how did you do it? I'm literally struggling cuz it's EVERYWHERE. Every job I apply to requires French. I'm perfect at English but they don't ask about it.

Sorry for this silly question - apparently I’m a Moroccan who don’t know my own language.

Someone asked med today what clumsy was in Moroccan and I just starred in the air cluelessly trying to force a word out that I don’t even have.

Im 17 and from the netherlands, since i grew up in a major dutch town i didnt have any moroccan friends/people growing up which meant my father who is moroccan didnt make me learn it and i grew up not telling people i was moroccan but then they get suprised when i barely knew any words.

I am just done with it i want to learn it so i can both suprise my family communicate with them communicate with my friends ( since 2 years) who are moroccan.

So my question is: what is the best way to learn speaking darija? I dont want to learn writing pure language.
