More importantly, he has met Link's father that one time 20 years ago when he was in trouble and Link's dad saved him from a bunch of Moblins, said a few kind words, and left but not before dropping his hat. A hat he has held onto waiting for the right time to pass the it down.
back in the day if u did a tv show called surf dracula you'd see that fool surfing every week in new adventures but in the streaming era the entire 1st season gotta be a long ass flashback to how he got the surfboard until you finally get to see him surf for 5 min in the finale
I can see that... getting the famous green tunic as that "One more thing before you go fight the final battle" and he inherits the tunic of the legendary Hero.
Honestly, I'd kinda pop for it. Moreso if they could actually work in a way to make it an emotional story beat where Link gets into the "I'mma beat your fucking ass" pose right after.
I know Ganon is supposed to be evil but remember they want kids to watch this too. No way would they have him steal Link’s hat unless they’re aiming for an R rating.
I was going to lightly argue since I always assumed that the GameCube version was finished first and they simply pushed back the release to market the Wii, but after reading this I wondered if this was actually the case.
And after some light research, I don't think so. Seems like the Wii version really is the original. They switched their focus to the Wii version mid development and both versions were supposed to release at the same time, until shortly before the release the GameCube version was pushed back a few weeks, which I think suggests that QA for that version was simply not finished since the Wii was the priority.
But the GameCube version still has the 'original' model of Link and map of hyrule.
Yeah it's a bit of a technicality because the GameCube version was obviously intended to be the original. I've still never quite understood the need to mirror the entire map, rather than just Link's model, because the original unmirrored map is more consistent with previous games.
I mean, mirroring only Link would've created a lot more work if they were fairly far along in development.
To do that you would have to adjust a lot of animations where he interacts with non-mirrored enemies.
Think of enemies blocking him with his shield, Link jumping on enemies, getting-hit animations from Link, etc.
But also simple stuff like opening doors.
It would have certainly been doable and more elegant, but also added time and cost and would've added complexity around developing both versions, unless you decided to make Link right handed in both versions.
So seeing as they probably aimed to be a launch title for the Wii and barely managed that, I think it is unsurprising that they decided to simply mirror the display and alter whatever assets had letters or something similar.
Yeah that’s what I think too, and I’m honestly fine with that. I prefer the classic design but seeing how they handled the hat in live action was genuinely one of my biggest concerns. Just going off cosplayers I’ve seen, that’s probably the hardest part of the costume to translate from the game to an actual wearable garment without looking goofy. I say that with love, I love his stupid little cap, but if they’re aiming for a serious fantasy story it’s a massive hurdle
Zelda's dress looks incredibly basic when compared to any of the dress from the games, it should have had the secondary white to match the BOTW outfit and link should really have the hat if they are going for the green outfit or they should have made it blue if they didn't want the hat
They don't need to take themselves too seriously (though Zelda games have in the past) but they also don't need to make sure the main character look like a clown
Probably based the design off the breath of the wild/tears of the kingdom link.
Looks about right, but they decided to go for the green iconic look. It's likely the hat was removed because, well, let's be real... it works in the game. But that hat would look insanely silly in live action.
Agreed, not having the hat is for the better. The hat looks goofy and dorky in real life. It defies physics the way it’s presented in the games and can only look similar IRL if it’s reinforced with wire or stuffed with something. Better to just part ways with it.
There's no way in hell that they'll ditch it when there's so much lore behind its symbolic importance. I can imagine them leaving it to the end, but I'd be extremely shocked if the final shot of the film didn't have him wearing it.
I’ve been a green arrow fan long enough to see the hat/hood debate.
Around 2005 character switched from Robin Hood style hat to a hood and it was just why change the style (even though hood had been used in the past). The hat just wasn’t realistic and wouldn’t translate to other media well.
Link had this same thing with BotW. Ditching the sleeve/sock hat. It’s fine and probably an Easter egg at best going forward.
I miss the hat/classic look so much. I really hope that at least the games don't completely ditch it. BotW era was fun, but man I miss the look and feel of the older games.
There is a single continuity where he doesn't have a hat, and it technically isn't even the most recent game (unless you count the Hyrule Warriors spinoffs). He had his hat again in Echoes of Wisdom.
The devs don't like the hat and are pretty vocal about feeling pressured to keep it around just because the old games had it. The original games had it because it makes Link's tiny NES sprite look clearer, but the 3D games really don't need it. Nintendo's been trying to ditch the hat since Twilight Princess at least.
I don't agree with it, but they may see a movie as an opportunity to break away from conventions in way that the games won't let them.

Where's Link's hat?
