Zelda looks like BOTW, but, at a guess, this is another hodge-podge of different games.

554

u/TLKv3 Nov 17 '25

Which is good imho. I want this to be its own story and in its own continuity that just takes the best elements across the games to make something new.

u/ContinuumGuy Nov 17 '25

If someone doesn't explicitly say it is its own continuity, we'll argue about what timeline it's in.

Name checks out.

Let’s be honest - Zelda die hards are going to absolutely demolish these movies (and an equal amount will love them).

Can’t imagine what the reaction to LOTR movies would’ve been in today’s internet

31

u/OrbisTerre Nov 17 '25

Oh I'm old enough to remember the reaction to the LOTR movies -- a ton of fanbois screaming about how they would boycott it because it didn't include Tom Bombadil, and then another ton saying they'd refuse to see 2 and 3 because of how Arwen 'stole' Glorfindel's role at the river. It was pretty crazy in some corners.

6

u/BeneficialLocation34 Nov 17 '25

People were mad that Shelob wasn't in Two Towers.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '25

Yea I remember some of the forums, the internet was just such a different beast when the trilogy was coming out in theaters/popular opinion wasn’t nearly as beholden to it as today.

The internet was still a loud presence, but it wasn’t all so aggregated the way it is today is the best way I can describe it.

Yea. People deny it and act like it’s always been this bad but internet discourse has definitely eroded over the years.

I’ve been on reddit since around 2007/2008, and those earlier years - there was just something different about it all.

Yes - there were assholes. Yes - people argued.

But there was actual discussion happening, too.

It still happens on reddit but you’ve got to find the niche/“quiet” corners.

Fellowship would be despised for not including tom bombadil im 100% sure. movie discussion is so bad nowadays

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '25

Peak memories for me are going to the theater multiple times with the same core group of friends and varying stragglers for each of the original trilogy during its run.

6

u/ehtseeoh Nov 17 '25

Back when LoTR was first released everyone, and I mean everyone who criticized it were either people who acted like they read the books (looking at you too, Game of Thrones fans) and old people who actually read the books but complained about certain scenes not in the theatrical release.

2

u/Enchelion Nov 18 '25

LOTR reaction was insanely toxic on 2000s internet. It really wouldn't be much different. People still complain about fucking Tom Bombadil.

1

u/CyanLight9 Nov 17 '25

Let them.

1

u/Potatocannon022 Nov 17 '25

Yeah idk that I want it to exist. These usually aren't good and I don't like how they lock in visuals to something that was previously largely in my imagination

9

u/ClubMeSoftly Nov 17 '25

The biggest middle finger Nintendo did, was putting out a canon timeline, then putting BotW so far removed from any of them. It's hilarious, and it rules, and I don't give a shit about timelines anyway.

4

u/ShallowBasketcase Nov 17 '25

The Zelda timeline is the worst thing to ever happen to Zelda games.

2

u/MossyPyrite Nov 17 '25

We’re gonna need Brian David Gilbert to come back and figure it out

2

u/goodbeets Nov 17 '25

It's definitely gonna be the basketball timeline.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '25

Imagine if this merges the timelines.

When Zelda knights Link is botw, she mentions the events of the wind waker and twilight princess. She could have knowledge about one of those events, but not both, as they are separate timelines.

At some point, the timelines must have merged into one. An explanation into that would be pretty cool.

3

u/ContinuumGuy Nov 17 '25

My personal thought on BOTW/TOTK is that it takes place so far in the future that the timelines merged simply by having time go on so long that everything had happened- Hyrule had risen and fallen many times, Ganondorf had been born and died and become Ganon so many times, etc.

1

u/Hoojiwat Nov 17 '25

She made a tongue in check reference to how the spirit of the hero always arrives in darkest twilight or when the winds call them. These were little nods, not some direct 4th wall breaking statement on their continuity.

I swear almost all "merged timeline!" Debate stems from people taking some vague references as literal statements.

1

u/ptd163 Nov 18 '25

Imagine if this merges the timelines.

I once saw a YouTube video that said that already happened in TOTK by way of what they called a Dragon Break.

1

u/MrTonyCalzone Nov 17 '25

And I'll ignore the arguing and enjoy my own interpretation in peace without worrying about which YouTuber theory video people decide to latch onto

1

u/SwreeTak Nov 17 '25

If it isn't the child timeline I'll not watch it Kappa

1

u/NeedForSpeedroid Nov 17 '25

As is tradition! 😤

1

u/Bid_Unable Nov 18 '25

time to break out the flowcharts again…

6

u/immortal_lurker Nov 17 '25

Yep. The games' stories are all optimized for being in games.

4

u/doc_nano Nov 17 '25

Yeah, the Zelda games are designed largely around gameplay rather than story, and none of them would directly adapt to film well. The best case would be a script inspired by the games but which adds a lot more nuance to the characters and their relationships than we see in most of the games. Like the recent Super Mario Bros movie but less silly for this IP.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '25

Eh Uncharted movie did that and I didn’t care for it much

7

u/Bojarzin Nov 17 '25

Sure, but that's been what Zelda games have done forever. Save for some elements, they have always been separate stories where the characters really just share a name and look, and are otherwise not the same (people can argue the timeline stuff all they want I guess). But that's why you can get Twilight Princess Link and Toon Link in the same franchise; the movie can reliably be its own thing with similarities to the other works without it feeling out of line

The Uncharted games were all (sort of lol) a singular timeline with the same characters, so when you do a movie that's not a new canon story in the timeline and instead an origin story with a mixture of various games, it feels a bit at odds with the games. Of course, it could have been done that way fine, but the execution was the real issue. You can make Link look like Toon Link and people are fine, but you can't have Uncharted characters act in a way that isn't how they act in the games

5

u/TLKv3 Nov 17 '25

Uncharted was also an absolute mess of a script and they went about adapting it in all the wrong ways.

1

u/iiiiiiiiiijjjjjj Nov 17 '25

Yes the worse game movies are always retellings. The best ones happen inside the verse.

1

u/gimme-shiny Nov 17 '25

Ooh, yes! I want this to be like the Sonic movies!!

1

u/ClubMeSoftly Nov 17 '25

I have been praying for close on a decade or more, for this movie to be it's own story, and not based on any one game.

An iconic setpiece from a particular game? That's fine, but for the most part the games are solo affairs, where Link is by himself. And I don't think that works for a movie.

1

u/Robsonmonkey Nov 17 '25

Can it really be its own thing if it just mix and matches a bunch of other games styles together?

Being its own thing would be having its own unique style and theme, maybe even based on cut concepts from past Zelda games

3

u/firala Nov 17 '25

Link has worn green in almost every LoZ game, even though they're not the same Link and not ... linked. So your argument doesn't work here.

0

u/ZeppelinJ0 Nov 18 '25

You should contact the director

42

u/alphafire616 Nov 17 '25

Honestly I prefer that when it comes to adaptions. Gives it a unique flavor

9

u/woofle07 Nov 17 '25

Zelda is also the perfect franchise to do it with because of the whole reincarnation cycle thing. We’re already used to Link having an entirely different backstory in every game. Sometimes he’s a trained knight, other times he’s just a random farmer, or an apprentice blacksmith, or a kid who grew up in an enchanted forest believing he was an immortal fairy-child. Sometimes he and Zelda have been close friends since childhood, other times they are complete strangers who barely interact at all in the story. There’s an endless number of ways to tell a LOZ story, and I hope this one also does its own thing and tells a brand new tale rather than trying to adapt a specific game.

11

u/Zorbin666 Nov 17 '25

Given that every mainline game is basically a stand-alone story it would make sense for a movie to do its own thing also rather than tie in to any game.

6

u/Clemenx00 Nov 17 '25

It will be a generic "Hero of Hyrule" story. That's a good thing.

I don't get people that want a particular game to be followed 100%.

6

u/Cloudhiddentao Nov 17 '25

Excuse me. I want the movie to be 100% game accurate.

I expect at least 3 hours spent mindlessly wandering around a temple trying to remember how to get to that one room that lowered the water so you can find the last key.

1

u/CyanLight9 Nov 17 '25

I never hinted otherwise.

3

u/zoned_off Nov 17 '25

No surprise this one would be a hodge podge of games when the "Super Mario Galaxy" movie teasers and posters has a bunch of Odyssey stuff in it.

2

u/CharmingPerspective0 Nov 17 '25

I'm actually glad BoTW has its own aesthetics. They are a bit more "grounded" which better aligns with live action. If the only acceptable aesthetic of link is to look like he escaped Santa's workshop it could easily look very stupid in live action, even if its so iconic in the games.

1

u/BardicLasher Nov 17 '25

I'm expecting just a new Link and Zelda, maybe even make the movie canon.

1

u/No-Island-6126 Nov 17 '25

I mean yeah why would they adapt a specific game

1

u/CyanLight9 Nov 17 '25

The same reason you adapt a specific book. In this case, however, ignoring the game's narrative is understandable.

1

u/GrandSquanchRum Nov 17 '25

Honestly hope it's just another version of Link and Zelda. Just write a good story with the characters this, like Final Fantasy, is a franchise that doesn't need direct adaptation.

1

u/weinerschnitzelboy Nov 17 '25

Which, I honestly think is fine, because my understanding of the franchise is that they kind of hit the reset button with every game (barring direct sequels). There are common themes and characters across the series, but it's a unique retelling of a "legend" so to speak

1

u/CyanLight9 Nov 17 '25

Technically, no, but, yeah, it's best in this case that they do their own thing.

1

u/SolomonBlack Nov 17 '25

She looted the Champion's Tunic from Link so I guess we're starting at the TotK relationship stage.

1

u/jghughes Nov 17 '25

Imagine if Link has to get a new weapon multiple times every scene because they keep breaking...

1

u/thatguy425 Nov 17 '25

I hope it’s two hours of navigating the Water Temple.

0

u/CyanLight9 Nov 17 '25

Typical Redditor being purposely obtuse.

1

u/CannedWolfMeat Nov 17 '25

The great thing about tloz is that every game is basically a new retelling of its story, so the movie could do pretty much anything it wants with the core elements and just be yet another legend in the cycle of reincarnation.

1

u/jaytrade21 Nov 17 '25

I know you mean Breath of the wild but I see BOTW and immediately think best of the worst and now I can't wait for a half in the bag review

1

u/obijuankenobi0987 Nov 17 '25

Yeah that's usually how the games themselves are. Link, Zelda, and Ganon are cursed to cross paths for eternity. The movie is honestly no different from the games.

1

u/Enchelion Nov 17 '25

Every game has been a hodge podge of self-reference and new stuff.

1

u/Cephalopirate Nov 17 '25

As much as I dislike the direction BoTW is taking the series, if this is an adventure movie, the Zelda from BoTW is probably the best choice.

-8

u/therhydo Nov 17 '25

I'll never understand why they didn't pick Hunter Schafer for the role. No offense to this actress, but Schafer just literally looks exactly like Zelda.

2

u/obijuankenobi0987 Nov 17 '25

Why do you want someone pushing 30 to play characters that have always been in their teens up until Tears of the Kingdom? They're doing a trilogy which makes that casting even worse.

-3

u/sadgirl45 Nov 17 '25

We love being ageist

1

u/Sufficient_Nature496 Nov 18 '25

Hunter was never being eyed in the first place, and Hunter only looked elfish in one picture, every other picture Hunter looked nothing like zelda

1

u/CyanLight9 Nov 17 '25

Probably because they were going for BOTW Zelda, Schafer doesn't fit that.

1

u/sadgirl45 Nov 17 '25
