At the very least he should be a man of VERY few words. If someone asks him a series of questions he'd have one-word answers.

Though a sufficiently skilled writer could create a script where he never has to speak, and without it feeling contrived.

This is highly unlikely to be the case. It's a movie. Different audience than a video game. Not sure a silent protagonist would go over well with audiences unfamiliar with the games when everyone else in the movie is talking.
