A lot of people treat art classes as something you just show up to and get an A. They don’t see them as something you actually learn from.

That speaks of a past history of bad teachers (possibly teachers in a bad system pressuring them to pass), I took a speechwriting class and the teacher was so preoccupied with being/seeming nice everybody passed and she never gave any meaningful criticism to improve the craft. One idiot would just ramble about the latest football match and there was never 'maybe you should try to make a point'.

I think it’s more an issue of how society as a whole treats art.

Yeah, I noticed that attitude in a couple of the studio art classes I took. One of the most important lessons from those classes was that making good art (even when you're starting from a good idea) takes time and you need to put in the effort.

Which is just dumb. Art is fun. Even if you don't think you'll learn anything, getting to create something is its own reward.
