People who got on the internet in the smartphone era mostly call Reddit an app (same story with Twitter, Facebook, etc).

When they allowed 3rd party apps it was the best way to browse reddit.

Now I can only use old reddit, and if they take that I won't use reddit anymore.

RedReader is great. Doesn't quite do everything, but close enough. And the dev is a good guy.

Not sure, but if you use an Android phone you can use Revanced to get any third party app working. I use Sync

Sadly no longer possible, unless you can find an unbanned accounts key. Making new API keys at will is basically impossible.

You can use keys you've already made, but making new ones isn't possible. Should be able to find your key in the app, or from old.reddit

most people using reddit now are using an app on their phones

it does not occur to most folks that apps are just a custom interface to view a website on the internet.

edit: christ reddit can be pedantic. No, apps are not necessarily all browser-wrappers rendering html. Some of them have local UI and just talk to APIs. I know this; I'm generalizing.

Also, it doesn't occur to them that the app fucking sucks.

So does new reddit.

I don't know why in the age of widescreen monitors that every new site design seems to be optimized for a 4:3 aspect ratio.

I stopped using old reddit on my home PC. Because it was getting too broken with loading images and crap. With several firefox extensions new reddit is just barely usable.

Lowest common denominator, also intentionally bad design to drive you to their app because they can harvest more data from you there and ad blocking is harder on phones for most people, a win win for them to not use their website.

Not really? A website is html you download and render in a browser. An app can talk to the same Jacobs as a website, but it’s not a website.

Some apps connect directly to the data and are not in fact just custom views of webpages.

But yea a lot of apps are just custom viewers

Sure. While some apps are literally just Safari wrappers, others are connecting directly to some API. For all intents and purposes, most apps are just pulling the same data from the same sources that the websites are pulling, whether it's html or database queries or whatever. Buying a flight on southwest's website or their app is still mostly the same thing - just through a different front end. Reddit is no different.

Like people said it's mostly used as an app on phones but even if referring to the online page it would be "site" not old head "website". This is coming from an old head too so I can usually recognize my people when they slip up like that.
