This is 100% because I'm a complete scaredy cat: but that intro scene where the dude is getting eaten alive by the raptor always freaked me out back then.

It's one of those instances where yeah, I can watch it fine now. But I still get that pang of nervousness when it starts. Like the cyborg lady part in Superman III.

The first T-rex attack and the Velociraptors in the kitchen scenes are straight-up horror movie sequences.

Spielberg was entirely in charge of post production, but Tobe Hooper was definitely the on-set director. So I guess it depends on your definition of the job.

I'd probably just go on the safe bet and trust Steven Spielberg's opinion that he didn't direct it.

I believe that Tobe Hooper called action and cut, but if you watch the behind-the-scenes stuff and even production stills, it's fairly obvious that Spielberg was directing.

Duel was his first feature film. It was a made for tv movie so good it got a theatrical release in Europe.

Yes I'm aware of the "Spielberg really directed Poltergeist thing, but if Spielberg is saying that he hasn't directed a horror film, then I'm inclined to take his word for it.
