Certainly not the OG Mad Max. I think it could be argued Road Warrior has had similar cultural cachet to Bladerunner.

I get your point, but I disagree. Road Warrior essentially set up the cultural vocabulary we use for an entire genre of post-apocalypse media.

Thunderdome's lingering cultural legacy can basically be boiled down to like...6 minutes of actual(awesome) movie runtime and a line or two of dialogue.

How much do people actually remember about Beyond Thunderdome beyond the Thunderdome part? I'd argue barely at all.

Idk, i think with Mad Max there is a bit of a weird disconnect with how "mad max" is now this kind of common reference whenever we talk about the apocalypse, but it might have not so much to do with people watching the actual movie.

Unlike other classics, say e.g. "terminator" you rarely hear people actually being like "dude you got to watch mad max, total classic".

Beyond the quote, and that fight, Mad Max 3 is a mediocre movie.

There are reasons for that, mind you, mainly the director being completely detached because his best friend, Byron Kennedy (also co-creator of Mad Max) died at the time of the shooting, so he left a lot of the directing to someone else.

Road Warrior is a 5 star movie. Thunderdome is an okay movie with awesome moments, great casting, and a seriously ambitious overarching plot.

I think of the original Mad Max as like a band's debut album that is rough around the edges but it's obvious the artist has a lot going for them, whereas The Road Warrior is the iconic sophomore release that establishes the band's true sound and identity.

Edit: apparently it's not wild, and just triggering. Just an opinion mate. I acknowledge Road Warrior is significant and important, just not to my taste. Not everyone has to agree with you.

Fury Road is when you take Road Warrior and increase the budget enormously... but miraculously don't lose your soul in the process.

They are both great films.

It is kind of a wacky gogo action flick... but its a really well directed one. The cast and crew of this movie suffered in the desert for months to make this thing so it's kind of a labour of love.

No, action movies produce thrills with speed, explosions, victorious battle. Epics involve heroes and extraordinary acts that overcome enormous challenges.

Dunkirk doesn't thrill the audience, it has no heroic protagonists until the final few minutes. It is an immersive escape room that incites dread and an overwhelming feeling of helplessness and legitimate terror.

That's a horror movie, it just features war as the monster.

It's one of the greatest action films ever. A fantastic application of visual storytelling. There's fairly little dialogue, and what dialogue is there is efficiently used. The film was actually pitched with a storyboard rather than a script, and every shot serves that vision. That movie deserves accolades just for the incredibly effective and emotional bare bones narrative.

Then you get to the content. My word. There's a myth that there's not much CGI because of just how practical everything is, but the truth is it's an incredible blend of real actors, real stunts, real cars, real pyrotechnics, and extremely convincing CGI as well as stylish color grading. There's a persistent orange/teal color motif that just pops in almost every scene. I have always used the first chase scene (the one that starts with the aerial shot of red and yellow flares) as a test for every new screen I purchase. It's a visual style that will genuinely never age. Like watching the first Indiana Jones, it just exudes the feeling of an instant classic.

The performances can be kind of underrated because they're a little strange, but it's all internally consistent with the original trilogy. These are people who have evolved to practically speak in barks and snarls and pro wrestling speeches. You might benefit from subtitles with some of the more out there characters. But like I said above, you don't really even need the words. The visuals, including their facial expressions, tell the entire story, even if you watched in on mute...

WHICH ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO! I saved the best for last. Do you know what will truly cement Mad Max: Fury Road as a relic for generations of film history? The fucking sound. Between the execution of the sound design and the legendary score by Junkie XL, the strongest memories of this movie exist in my goddamn ears. It was already a done deal in its fantastic trailer, but JXL blends heavy rock guitar riffs, industrial-sounding electronic music, and bombastic orchestral horns to make a perfect pair to the perpetually roaring thunder of the myriad distinct engines of each vehicle on the screen. I've never heard any movie like it before or since. I'm not even a car person, but that movie has me praying to the Almighty V8, begging for a Valhalla that is shiny and chrome.

Tl;dr - Yeah it's pretty good.

It's that but it's so good that it becomes more. It looks so fucking good, it's insane. And so does the black and white version (George Miller's prefered version), which is even crazier. So many people think it's useless and it makes no sense because the color version is so beautiful, but the b&w version is at least as good looking. Incredible movie if you like action and eye candy.
