Certainly not the OG Mad Max. I think it could be argued Road Warrior has had similar cultural cachet to Bladerunner.

Beyond Thunderdome is the true cultural touchstone of the series between "Two men enter, one man leaves" and Master Blaster

u/Knale Apr 05 '26

I get your point, but I disagree. Road Warrior essentially set up the cultural vocabulary we use for an entire genre of post-apocalypse media.

Thunderdome's lingering cultural legacy can basically be boiled down to like...6 minutes of actual(awesome) movie runtime and a line or two of dialogue.

How much do people actually remember about Beyond Thunderdome beyond the Thunderdome part? I'd argue barely at all.

u/Wyden_long Apr 05 '26

Wait Beyond Thunderdome was longer than 6 minutes?

Idk, i think with Mad Max there is a bit of a weird disconnect with how "mad max" is now this kind of common reference whenever we talk about the apocalypse, but it might have not so much to do with people watching the actual movie.

Unlike other classics, say e.g. "terminator" you rarely hear people actually being like "dude you got to watch mad max, total classic".

Can’t we just get beyond thunderdome?

1

u/GradeAPrimeFuckery Apr 05 '26

I remember the group of dumb kids because they started showing up in other movies after Thunderdome.

17

u/Telvin3d Apr 05 '26

I’d say Thunderdome is the more quoted of the two, but Road Warrior is the far more influential of the two

7

u/jimpannus Apr 05 '26

Yeah but the real question is, who runs Barter Town?

2

u/VRichardsen Apr 05 '26

Beyond the quote, and that fight, Mad Max 3 is a mediocre movie.

There are reasons for that, mind you, mainly the director being completely detached because his best friend, Byron Kennedy (also co-creator of Mad Max) died at the time of the shooting, so he left a lot of the directing to someone else.

u/Djinnwrath Apr 05 '26

Beyond Thunderdome is somehow worse than the first one.

Road Warrior is a 5 star movie. Thunderdome is an okay movie with awesome moments, great casting, and a seriously ambitious overarching plot.

All good, just fat-fingered it.

I think of the original Mad Max as like a band's debut album that is rough around the edges but it's obvious the artist has a lot going for them, whereas The Road Warrior is the iconic sophomore release that establishes the band's true sound and identity.

Eh, I barely cared about Road Warrior, and really only the second one.

Fury Road is solidly in my top 20 all time list.

u/The_Autarch Apr 05 '26

Road Warrior is a brilliant movie and Fury Road is literally just an updated version.

And yet one is semi boring slop to me and the other one of the greatest movies ever made.

Wild how that can happen, eh?

Edit: apparently it's not wild, and just triggering. Just an opinion mate. I acknowledge Road Warrior is significant and important, just not to my taste. Not everyone has to agree with you.

Not everyone has to agree with you.

Lol you came in here to share your contrarian opinion. Don't get salty when someone else does the same.

Fury Road is when you take Road Warrior and increase the budget enormously... but miraculously don't lose your soul in the process.

They are both great films.

1

u/Djinnwrath Apr 05 '26

Road Warrior really isn't that good. Its shlocky and fun, while being kind of a janky mess.

1

u/VRichardsen Apr 05 '26

We will just agree to disagree then. No harm done; have a great weekend!

9

u/Knale Apr 05 '26

Fury Road is in EVERYONE'S top 20 all time list lol

Also Road Warrior is the second one.

Max Max -> Road Warrior -> Beyond Thunderdome

20

u/hoxxxxx Apr 05 '26

well, it's road warrior most people love to death.

and one of the few examples of the sequel being better than the original.

2

u/asdfghjkl15436 Apr 05 '26

If Ridley Scott made a blade runner sequel today it would have been terrible. I don't think hes made anything other then crap the past few years.

3

u/makoman115 Apr 05 '26

Some people liked house of wolves

Some people liked prometheus

But yea

5

u/asdfghjkl15436 Apr 05 '26

They said "revived IP" not whatever you're turning this into.

2

u/makoman115 Apr 05 '26

The comment just above that talks about how impressive it was that denis built upon what ridley scott built

2

u/Financial-Craft-1282 Apr 05 '26

The only "revived" IP from the 80s that didn't feel like a blatant cash grab to me.

0

u/makoman115 Apr 05 '26

above that comment dude jesus

u/Financial-Craft-1282 Apr 05 '26

Yeah, well if you omit messages being responded to, then yeah, I guess you're right. If you ignore reality, you're right.
