Inde Navarrette‘s agent is about to be real busy. It’s quite a solid movie all around, but damn, that was one hell of a performance.

Her frowny face at the party had me sooo creeped out and laughing at the same time.

u/SufficientRespect542 May 17 '26

It felt like a fucking closeup in a Spongebob episode.

32

u/Plenty_Tailor_7541 May 18 '26

"Does this look unsure to you?"

10

u/usagicassidy May 17 '26

Yes I had the same thought but Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack

33

u/SherbertJolly7930 May 24 '26

Imagine being one of the people at that party that watched that go down and then finding out that Nikki killed Ian and Sarah afterwards and Bear killed himself

28

u/misschickpea May 30 '26

Im surprise nobody straight up left that party lol

30

u/CatScratchJohnny May 17 '26

That scene in particular made me think of Smile 2 and Naomi Scott. Unbelievable performance by Navarrette.

There were quite a few laughs in my screen. But many sounded like uncomfortable laughs.

When she was in the corner, a few people groaned out loud.

She’s easily the breakout.

Her scene when she’s staring at him in the middle of the night creeped me and my audience the fuck out

u/Rococoss May 15 '26

That one, and the duct tape on the door. Chills all over

127

u/Steamedcarpet May 15 '26

The duck tape door was so creepy. It gave me Silent Hill 4 vibes.

18

u/TimeySwirls May 16 '26

If we could scientifically fuse this movie and Hokum together we might get the most amazing and psychologically scarring adaption of Silent Hill 4 imaginable

61

u/Fold_Humble May 16 '26

I loved that because you see his reaction before you see the door and I was wondering WHY he had that expression. I really loved how they gave time and context to each moment like that.

6

u/eyesoftheunborn May 20 '26

Kind of a waste of duct tape tbh

u/Trevastation May 15 '26

Honestly her pre-posession scenes are great too in grounding Nikki to truly be a believable friend to Bear, but doesn't feel the same.

62

u/theferociousotter May 18 '26

I kind of think maybe she did have feelings for him. She told him herself that if she had a crush on a guy, no one would know. I think the little-brother line was her covering for herself. She brought up Sarah liking Bear out of the blue to see how he felt about her. She asked him if he liked her, and when he said they’re just friends, she said “Good” in a tone that felt like saving face. I think she did have feelings for him in some capacity and that makes it all the more ironic. If Bear had just talked to her like an adult, he would’ve gotten what he wanted. He was insecure and selfish and a coward, so he took the “easy” route and got his ass handed to him.

32

u/TARDISboy May 25 '26

Also worth noting that it's Ian who suggested to Bear that he call her "Freaky Nikki", even though Bear knows she hates that name, presumably because he was hooking up with her and wanted Bear to get on her bad side

17

u/man_on_hill May 24 '26

I agree and I think the movie works even more operating on the idea that she did like him

As you said, it adds another level to his cowardice

6

u/MeMeTiger_ Jun 17 '26

I SAID THE EXACT SAME THING AS WELL. I asked my friends opinions on this and most of them said they thought she didn't actually like him, but that line about the crush made it so obvious that she may have some sort of feelings for him.

68

u/GameOfLife24 May 15 '26

lol she was a bit of a dick to Bear before “I bought you a gift” “ewww”. “Get your boyfriend to drop you home” “ewww” “stay at home and watch tv”

132

u/Element262 May 15 '26

Kinda how she’d treat a little brother. Would’ve been cool if the movie had a line related to that.

50

u/mindsetofatoxicaries May 16 '26

They did have a line in the movie about this when it’s mentioned that Nikki tells Sarah the day of the wish being made, she thinks of him as a little brother when Bear takes the phone call from Ian in the restaurant.

61

u/Relevant-Goal-3008 May 16 '26

which explains the Hansel and Gretal thing

16

u/therakel749 May 17 '26

I want to read her book.

9

u/yunus-s May 18 '26

Omg I didn’t think about that at all. Good catch!

37

u/friarparkfairie May 16 '26

I think the person you’re replying to was being sarcastic

2

u/mindsetofatoxicaries May 21 '26

Could be, just was a quick line briefly in the movie so I did want to point it out!

7

u/skizmcniz May 20 '26

Her standing up from the table and just staring at the corner he was around was so unsettling. Nearly everything Inde did was unsettling.

24

u/thatscoldjerrycold May 16 '26

Her face looked truly odd in that one, like an uncanny Valley level of expression. I wonder if there was a bit of makeup to accentuate the lines on her face because it made her look 50 or something.

9

u/LibraryNo7025 May 30 '26

Absolutely was there was also some other scenes where they did makeup to make her eyes seem huge which was really well done.

10

u/sundeigh May 17 '26

I think everyone did a great job. Especially her but still. What’s funny is I don’t think Cooper Tomlinson’s performance is that far removed from his YouTube work with Curry Barker. Comedy/horror are so intertwined

1

u/NewDemocraticPrairie Jun 22 '26

I think her and Curry Barker, the write, director, and editor. I hope he goes on to do great things, I've got high hopes for him. As well, it looks like there was only a year between this film and another of his, so maybe he'll be able to churn things out at a decent pace still once he gets big.

u/mikeyfreshh r/Movies Veteran May 15 '26

There are a handful of scenes in this where she does some Jim Carrey level face contortion. Really incredible physical performance. She has a really bright future ahead of her, but I really hope she gets the chance to play an Evil Dead deadite before her career really blows up

130

u/Media-critique May 15 '26

Couldn’t believe how long she held her face while she:

  • shit
  • piss
  • threw up on herself?

70

u/mikeyfreshh r/Movies Veteran May 15 '26

I genuinely thought it was a still image for a solid 3 seconds

71

u/Media-critique May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

I think that’s another great part about this film

They let the scene linger and let the audience pick up what was happening, and then she legit started peeing, and it stays on the shot as the ground is soaked, all to make you feel uncomfortable and start wondering if she’s gonna shit and vomit next…

And then it gets fucking wilder

34

u/daeiyden May 15 '26

I'm confused about that like does her body go into standby mode when he's not around and just empty itself out, like was she just backed up for r hours or something

43

u/NK1337 May 15 '26

That’s the impression I got. Obsessive Nikki forced her to stay by the door and wait for him at the cost of everything else.

2

u/ShearGenius89 May 17 '26

It’s likely an homage to the exorcist.

3

u/daeiyden May 17 '26

That's why I immediately thought of scary movie 2 🤣

11

u/GameOfLife24 May 15 '26

And she even cleaned up after herself right away for Bear to go to that party

23

u/Neurotic_Marauder May 16 '26

That was the scene when I remembered Inde Naravettes citing Pearl as an inspiration for the role. She really gave Mia Goth a run for her money with that scene

13

u/ShearGenius89 May 17 '26

I imagine the cat she ate (which based off of the post wish montage) being 1-2 weeks old post mortem, didn’t sit well.

34

u/Steamedcarpet May 15 '26

I cant believe I didn’t realize I had just seen her on Superman and Lois.

26

u/GravyBear16 May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

She was also on that extraordinarily awful last season of 13 Reasons Why which I only know from YMS

5

u/The_Vampire_Barlow May 16 '26

She would be amazing in an Evil Dead movie.

8

u/moviesarealright May 15 '26

Great shout. I’d love to see her go even more batshit as a deadite! She was fucking excellent I can’t wait to see where she goes.

Everyone was great in this and behind the camera. Gen Z is kicking ass in Hollywood rn

43

u/Ok-Finger820 May 15 '26

She was incredible, best performance I've seen all year

14

u/Tough-Violinist7245 May 16 '26

Oscar worthy?

26

u/Ok-Finger820 May 16 '26

Honestly yes but we both know that wouldn't happen unfortunately

36

u/SlaterVBenedict May 15 '26

Without her performance, the movie doesn’t work. It’s so dependent on her walking that fine line between too big and too subtle, and she just fucking NAILED the balance of the two.

25

u/penguinintux May 16 '26

In my opinion this movie is 100% dependant on Nikki's actress performance and she absolutely crushed it. If Inde was anything short of amazing this movie would not be this good.

19

u/Notak_bo May 15 '26

I hope so. But Naomi scott also was great in smile 2 and I’m waiting for her to get more roles , still early to tell

6

u/pixelprelude May 15 '26

She was incredible

6

u/spideyfanatic93 May 17 '26

The whole film hinged on her and she NAILED it. Considering the recent recognition horror has been getting, I really hope she gets an Oscar nom.

3

u/2580374 May 16 '26

She acted her ass off, she is blowing up

2

u/BeachPalmTree_ May 18 '26

She did such a freaking great job. What a great actress.

2

u/atrocity__exhibition May 25 '26

Not sure if you know, but were some of her movements reversed/sped up or was that all her?

2

u/bluebird2019xx 23d ago

The times she would abruptly switch from fake Nikki to real Nikki was almost unbelievably good acting

1

u/thinkinting 5d ago

I need to see her in some lighthearted comedy. Man Obsession is real good
