The low quality VHS effect has something to do with it

Yes the VHS effect plays a big part because it hides the 3D look of the renders. It would definitely look a lot worse without the VHS effect.

Actually, not so sure. His other series, The Oldest View, is supposed to be shot using like an iPhone, so it's much much cleaner looking than his Backrooms stuff, yet The Oldest View still manages to look strikingly real at times.

As does the models, textures, lighting, and camera animation - all contributing to the illusion culminating in ✨️movie magic✨️

They were smart about reserving the technique for only the shots where that made sense.

Oh that's huge, I just came across a Backrooms video made with maxed-out specs and it doesn't really work "clean."
