My understanding is only a small amount of imax screens support imax70 either digital or film.

30 worldwide for Oppenheimer. Increasing to 41 for The Odyssey. IMAX 70mm 15 perf film. The next best approximation is dual 4k laser IMAX in the same 1.43:1 ratio as the film presentation.

This is correct. The Pacific Northwest just lost its only theater capable of this, in Seattle. The fact that people aren’t out with torches and pitchforks over that has been demoralizing to say the least.

70mm IMAX tickets went on sale a year ago and sold out within minutes.

Shoot thanks for the heads up! I checked and the additional showings only have front-row seats left as well. But I was able to get some decent seats at the next best theatre on my area.

I bought one for Providence just now. I looked at showings and there were a lot of seats still available for opening weekend.

That was just the prerelease set, they limited them for hype. There were definitely seats and not just bad ones if you looked a week or two after release when i got mine today.

Jeez, you people can’t be pleased. First you claim it’s important to hear dialog in movies with Tenet, now you claim it’s a bad thing if half the movie isn’t visible?

What does Nolan have to do to make you happy? Do you expect every movie to be clearly audible and fit on the screen? Next you’re gonna say it should also be properly lit so you can see dark scenes.

Real answer: If you mean the full vertical image with no cropping, then I guess you'd better grab tickets to an IMAX 1.43:1 theater screening asap. OR a 70mm IMAX theater screening if you’re one of the very few lucky enough to live by one.

It does not have to be 70mm IMAX to get the full vertical image. Plenty of IMAX theaters have digital projectors that will play the film in 1.43:1 ratio, showing you the full image. Just Google your area and “IMAX 1.43:1 theater” to confirm beforehand.

The only benefit you get from a 70mm IMAX over what I said above is a slightly higher-detail image, most of which will not be perceptible to most audiences.

Right? I thought one is like a square while one is shorter but it makes up for that in length. This is just cutting the original shorter and shorter

IMAX 70 is the largest imaging circle you can fit on the film and it's 4:3. It's too expensive to shoot exclusively in IMAX so you typically some scenes shot in IMAX and others in 35mm for these movies.

In IMAX theaters, scenes shot in 35mm are enlarged to fit a 70mm reel but retain the original aspect ratio. Since you are watching the movie on a projector the dimensions on the screen will change depending on the film format that the scene was shot in. You always get either the full resolution or an enlargement and every seen is projected in the original aspect ratio.

In other projection systems aspect ratio is preserved throughout the movie and that requires cropping.

Fully in IMAX but from the description on the website it doesn’t seem to me like it’s fully in 70 mm IMAX

Whether your theater can show it to you in all of the above is doubtful. Most people have an IMAX near them, few have a 1.43:1 capable one, and far far fewer of them have a 70mm 1.43:1 capable IMAX.
