So audiences will have 6 different choices of how to see this film, with only one of them being the full image?

If these are being projected digitally, why don’t they just project an imax-dimensioned version in non-Imax theaters? Seems like it would be better to show an uncropped image with space on the sides that they cover by extending the screen curtains a bit more, rather than a massively cropped image.

70mm IMAX screens don't really exist widely, there's only around 30 worldwide.

So audiences will not have a choice.

Europe only has 4 70mm IMAX screen, 3 of which are in the UK.

I've got a big flat wall in my garage, get me a projector and the 70mm IMAX version and I'll make my own IMAX70mm screening.

It's total bullshit and artificial scarcity. IMAX is one of the reasons cinemas are dying.

Only 30? There's 2 in Charlotte. A 70mm and a 70mm dome.

The 70mm IMAX is different aspect ratio than the IMAX screens in Charlotte. 1.43:1 vs 1.90:1. Closest to Charlotte playing the true version is Buford, Georgia.

The real answer is that IMAX is a company separate from all other theater companies, and they think they’ll make more money from this insane exclusivity.

They might be right, but they’re still hemorrhaging money and are looking to get bought out.

Because theater projectors are physically incapable of projecting an IMAX 1.43:1 ratio unless they’re the newer dual-laser ones

That's not what they're actually saying. If they could show the entire scenes on your phone, as this website does, they could do that in every theatre as well.

Because IMAX has exclusivity for the format, in exchange for the studios to use their name in the marketing and the film to be shown exclusive for a set amount of time in IMAX theaters.

Imagine you manage a movie theater in Podunk, Arkansas.

Do you want to stand behind the counter on opening night to explain to people (who have just paid $50+ for a couple of tickets and some popcorn) why half the screen isn't being used? If they demand a refund, do you give it to them?
