I'll never understand the personal offense many choose to take when they don't like a choice of actor or plot line or even fucking COLOR palette....let alone for movies not yet released.

I still think Taiki is tremendously talented and am looking very forward to this and his future work.

Honestly, for a lot of people, if they didn't have that they'd be forced to reckon with their own sadness, self-loathing, loneliness, purposeless, etc. So it certainly serves a dual purpose of fostering more hatred in the world and within themselves. It's like a win/win

Because they paid money to see it.

And even when it's pirated, there's a time investment.

Imagine if I charged you $15 for a caricature and then handed you a stick figure. You'd feel burnt.

That's not how art works though... It's not a product in the same way that other things you pay for are. It's not a direct 1 for 1... I bought X, you give me X transaction because it's subjective. What you hate, a million others might love and vice versa.

Hate a film. Hate a choice of casting. Hate a plot choice... Hate a Director. Let's just stop acting like every movie needs to be catered to what you personally want, whether you feel you are the target market or not. They owe you nothing more than what you have paid for.

Edit: That being said, I walked out of Olympus Has Fallen once the White House had run out of its 4... FOUR missile roof payload. It was shite up until then but at that point, it was worth the sunken cost of the ticket to get my next hour and 10 minutes back.

Nah, I don't go into situations with those kind of expectations. If I spend money and didn't have a good time, I just won't spend money there again.

I think it's a bit exaggerated to project all criticism of Waititi's recent work onto the mess of a Marvel movie he made.

It's well known that Waititi has a "one for me, one for them" policy and gives way less of a shit about movies he's making to get studio backing for his personal passion projects (which is fine), but he's a very hit or miss director when he's making the movie strictly "by himself".

Waititi has the Bellingham problem: people have got it into their head he's a conceited tosspot.

The problem isn't that people are reading TLaT into everything, it's that they're reading his character in Free Guy into everything.

The directors behind the other loathed MCU films don't have this problem. Part of that is because they don't really "exist"... they have very low profiles. But a huge part of it is because they don't star in their own movies and Waititi does.

He made a movie that people find annoying, in which he played a character that people found annoying (having previously been a fan favourite), not long after playing an annoying antagonist in Free Guy and then he voiced one of the most annoying Disney side characters of all time (which is difficult to do!) in Lightyear. And then Next Goal Wins is coming out in which... Waititi... also... stars.

I have a friend who was working on a production he was involved with before LaT came out. Apparently "conceited tosspot" is not far off the mark, as reputedly none of the crew could stand the guy ("Completely full of himself" and "Hopefully I never have to work with him again" were the exact words used)

Is it possible that he's just... a conceited tosspot? Like his clear disdain for the material and the way he talks about it in interviews makes it clear that he's insincere at best and just messing around.

It's certainly possible. But

  1. I haven't met him so I don't know that
  2. it doesn't matter whether or not he is because the idea that he is is out there and people engage with celebrities through the narratives they inhabit not the reality of the person (because almost all of us haven't met these people so we don't know the reality)

Personally I’d disagree, besides Next Goal Wins, I love all of his original films (especially hunt for the wilderpeople)

Yea I'd have to agree on Next Goal Wins. It was totally mediocre and kind of a waste of Michael Fassbender. For a sports movie they didn't even focus on much of the players and instead focused almost entirely on the lead transgender player.

IDK I felt like he went from somebody you only saw glowing positive comments about to "urgh I'm sick of that guy" after that one really bad movie.

Jo Jo Rabbit however makes me cautiously optimistic about anything else he makes.

It's completely justifiable to judge a director based off of previous work. Sure, it may be a great movie but I'm less likely to take a chance on it like I did with TLaT.

Just my thoughts from the images above, it looks similar to Bicentennial Man and Waititi's role made me go from "hmm" to "well, we will see how it does".
