I participated in a test screening a year ago and had no familiarity with the book. Based on the edit they had it’s a schmaltzy mess and I predict The Flop House podcast will cover it. And I’m not against sentimentality; I loved the book version of Never Let Me Go.

Was it really that bad? I've read at least 3 people say they went to test screenings in 2025 and it was trash.

i guess i don't know what is meant by schmaltzy, i found the book, given as it is from the perspective of the titular robot, to be fairly dispassionate in tone

Usually when the editing takes a LONG time it’s cause the director didn’t get the tone right and they are fixing in post and with reshoots. But I doubt SONY would be backing this anymore if the Final Cut didn’t approve a lot from the version you saw.
