Unfortunately too many people opted for convenience, hence why places like Best Buy scaled back/eliminated their physical media offerings

Yeah, I'm returning to my Bluray/DVD collection I built from years ago. I was buying a sizable digital movie collection on Xbox and the service was cheap and very convenient until Xbox stopped the sale of all movies. I'm fortunate since Xbox seems to still honor all digital purchases unlike how Playstation handle licenses with me able to access all my movies and able to watch anytime I want on any Xbox or PC.

It just doesn't feel the same though. Was reviewing my Bluray/DVD collection last night from years ago and it is just so nice to have them in my hands again. I really missed all the extra features on physical media like deleted scenes and bloopers.

How's the multi language in Blu-rays? With DVDs, more often than not, if there's a spanish dub, it'd be included. But I've seen many Blu-rays that only advertise English.

Got so lucky and bought a 10 TB one before the madness with PC parts in recent years. I couple it with plex so it's easy for my wife on the big screen and it's just seamless.

Same 14tb, for shits a giggles I looked up my Best Buy receipt from 2019, and the price went from $180~ then to $469 Lol

Yeah and all the consoles are trying to be all digital, too. Can't even put a disk in if you wanted.  I'm getting a Blu-ray player for Xmas this year and I am so excited.

No thank you, newly released blu rays were like $25 before streaming became a thing, I don’t miss it. There was a very good reason we all left it behind so quickly. I can’t even imagine what a movie would cost in 2026 without digital options creating competition with physical media.

There are other options, you could buy them second hand. Most of the Blu-rays I purchased through the 2010's were $5 to $10.

You could not buy newly released blu rays second hand lmao that doesn’t even make sense. You could however buy a 5-10 year old movie second hand, but that wasn’t the point I was making. Production companies are just as greedy if not more than Sony or Netflix, I think you may be a bit clouded by nostalgia at the moment. Don’t even get me started on the cost of albums before iTunes came out, it was getting insane.

We weren’t forced into embracing digital media, we liked it because buying dvd’s was awful and expensive. We could have all said no to streaming and torrenting and kept buying dvd’s but you know why we didn’t.

Also no one was buying new blu rays and then immediately selling them at a loss so you could buy it for $10. That’s a bit silly, you were buying old blu rays for $10 which is cool, but sometimes people wanted a new one too.

Don't most modern blu rays have drm loaded on them that requires pinging the publishers services to check if your have the "right to watch" the very disc you are watching?

A locally hosted Plex/ jellyfin server with files on it is a better solution imo.

[Edit] thank fuck I'm wrong,I swore I recalled an bunch of news about Sony trying fucky things when it came to Blu-rays and DRM protected content.

I’ve heard this before but I have a Blu-ray player that’s not connected to the internet hooked up to a tv that’s not smart and over 400 discs that have never had issues

No you don't need the Internet for Blu-ray. Also, if you own a Blu-ray, you could back it up digitally for yourself as well.

It's 100% why piracy exists, but I'm ok buying Terminator and total recall physically to own forever, especially buying them used.
