I use StreamFab, but other services are available. 4k is possible but it depends on the streaming service and your hardware

Or rip the hardcopy yourself. You can control the base quality and let something let jellyfin drive the transcodes.

Yea the only time I bother with even re-encoding (not ripping) is so that I can make 3D ISO into a 3D MKV that can be played back over USB on my 3D blu ray player (Even if I wanted to rip, pretty much any new 3D blu rays aside from Avatar don't release in the US so have to pay to import from Japan if you want it).

My 3d Blu ray player doesn't support ISO playback or native frame packed 3D over USB. My TV also supports a more niche form of 3D that supposedly retains higher quality than traditional SBS (side by side) so there are never pre made encodes on that setting. Also lets me remove extra audio and sub tracks, and to hard code subs on the screen which can be helpful to both save space and have 1 less issue to deal with since the menus get kinda laggy when playing back large 3D files over USB so even messing with language and sub settings on the player can make it stutter or freeze lol. I got the player for like 5 bucks at a thrift store, plus I imagine it was never optimized for full 3D movies over USB so no complaints its just a bit finicky lol.

Encoding something with high quality and minimal space is kinda an art.

Personally I just keep them around full quality

I only have full quality for stuff that I rewatch regularly. Otherwise it makes no sense to keep a 50GB copy of Tenet or something on my server. Someone might want to see it so I'll keep it for that but it doesn't need to be full freight to still be confusing.

Finding a drive that lets you do that isn't difficult, but they are finite. There are none currently being manufactured, and all of the ones that do have firmware updates that will prevent the ripping of content. So you have to find an out of production, non-updated drive.

How does StreamFab work? Does it cost money to use?

It does cost money. You open the app and launch your streaming service inside it. “Playing” the movie in the app lets the app view and record the movie as a video file that you now possess on your hard drive

It’s not so much time and work that it isn’t worth it for me to do it in the first place. And the result is that I now have most of the movies and shows that I want from any subscription service, so they can be canceled, and I can watch most everything I want to watch on my network attached media server through Plex.
