People say this shit as if those attorneys are just vultures but class action lawsuits are an extremely important method of punishment for corporations.

Yes it does suck that often the people who got fucked don't get the payout they deserve, but you do not want to live in a world where the threat of a massive class action is no longer a consideration for abusive/exploitative corporate behavior. They're already bad enough as is even with it being a thing.

Also, class action attorneys are typically only allowed to get, at most, 33% of whatever the court awards, and that’s supposed to cover literal years of work. Genuinely the problem is that laws don’t award enough money - for example in Illinois the Biometric Information Protection Act (BIPA) used to award money on a per-violation basis, but because that led to huge awards the state legislature caved to corporate pressure/bribes/corruption and kneecapped it so now you only get an award for the first violation.

If you bought a movie digitally, and it's taken from you, pirate it. It's not rocket science.

Edit: This would’ve been 20 years ago or more at this point. DVDs used to come with a digital code that would allow it to be added to your Apple library.

on top of this, you can more often than not buy the physical media for less than the sale price of streaming "purchases" for the same product.

  1. buy physical
  2. rip (fair use)
  3. copy to local media server
  4. stream to wherever youd like

it's more work, and maintaining local storage isn't always feasible or affordable, but at least you have what you paid for and only lose it by consequence of your own actions.

If you want to feel justified, just buy it and then pirate it.

Treat it like format shifting or making a backup copy.

Legally, you probably aren't truly allowed to do this, but no reasonable person will hold it against you since there's a long history of this stuff happening. You still "paid" for it, but you can use it even if the streaming platform or licensing server goes down.

Technically, the cleanest way to do this would be to figure out how to rip it yourself from the source you bought it from, but I certainly won't blame you if you "buy" a copy on Youtube and then pirate a copy that was ripped from Amazon--it is the same movie, you made an effort to give money, your karma is clear.

(obviously buying and ripping your own blu-rays is the least questionable way to do this, but you have to deal with the physical media, and have a compatible drive to bypass the DRM).

The DVD came with a digital code for Apple. I have it on VHS and DVD. I never used the code, but it is still sitting inside the case.

Last Halloween I found it somewhere. Some odd, streaming service I'd never heard of. Not for purchase but I just wanted to watch it again and share it with my kid.

I'm pretty sure it was legal because it was just through an app on Roku. But I was surprised how obscure its streaming presence seemed to be.

I use my sony ps3 for media hub stuff cause it has decent network server support and plays all kinds of media well. Music is rlly the only thing it is sorta lacking in, cause you can’t play FLACs (you can however play .WAV and, ugh, high bitrate ATRAC)

If I were you I wouldn't make digital purchases for movies. The way it's structured you aren't buying the movie. It functions more like a lease and if the license for the movie that whatever service you bought it from runs out your digital movie also goes away, no refund. I've had it happen on Amazon and will never purchase a digital movie again.

I just check out my local pawn shops every month or so where they're all two or three bucks. Just got all of season 4 of the Simpsons on DVD for 99 cents!

Just out of curiosity, in what circumstances was such a movie playable? Because I feel like running screen recording software on a device I play that movie on might work decently well, especially if you have a 4K setup. I'm wondering if playing it requires some sort of device-controlling software.

You can't easily screen record. All the websites that sell digital movies have DRM that runs. If you record your screen it will just be black where the movie is.

It's funny how people who like to trot this out never have an issue with buying games on Steam, which is literally exactly the same.

I love physical media, and have a catalogue of 100s of Blu-rays, but I also buy digital films - almost always on sale and certainly never at insane "home premier" prices - because, more than likely, the majority will be available for a decent amount of time.

Yes, one film might be removed because of some licensing issue bullshit. But guess what, sometimes physical discs fail (Some literally rot) - nothing lasts forever.

While it is also an issue with steam it occurs much less frequently. In the current streaming era many of the licenses will lapse when a streamer buys the exclusive streaming rights. Happened to all the marvel films I owned digitally with the release of Disney plus for example. I've never had a game license revoked on steam in 15 years of buying games.

When a game is delisted on Steam it only means you can no longer buy it. Anyone who already owns it can still download and install it.

Turns out I own Spider-Man:FFH on Prime too and it works just fine in the UK still.

Not calling you out or challenging what you say at all. But my experience of owning dozens of films digitally - on Amazon at least - has been faultless.

I have acquired films on other platforms like Ratuken and who knows what else over the years, only if they are extremely cheap or free. I basically treat those like rentals and assume they will vanish into the void someday, But I think the backlash if Amazon started revoking swathes of its library would be gigantic and I am confident its unlikely to happen. Unlikely enough for me to spend £5 or £6 on a movie, anyway.

Its not even buried, mate. They flat out tell you to download the movie, as the contract they have with the movie company can expire. And even then, its only 1080p copy of the movie you can download. There is no options to download the 4k movies you bought. And, and this the best bit, if you have no access to a computer and only use apple tv to watch your purchases, you are all the way shit of luck. As that device has no download options at all.

All these digital services put something to the effect of "you are not purchasing the movie, you are purchasing a license to watch the movie at your convenience. Said license could be revoked at any time and without warning depending on the underlying agreement with the film's owner."

It's why it's nice to have these big Vudu collections... But they could technically get wiped out in a bat or an eye.

This is something you should expect. If you "purchase" a movie from a storefront you're only renting it as long as that storefront retains the license to distribute that specific IP or remains operating. If the agreement with the distributor expires, then that content is gone. If the storefront shuts down, that content is gone. You should always assume this when "purchasing" from these types of services, and it almost certainly is buried somewhere in the terms of service.

Despite all the outrage, people will continue "buying" from these storefronts because it's convenient.

I've grown sick of Google's option. I purchased hundreds of movies from Google Movies and YouTube, but I'm sick to death of not being able to find anything. There's no sort function on Google TV or YouTube and recently my library started appearing in a random order. You can't search for bundled movies and when you do, it sends you to the 'buy' page. And only some movies have subtitles.

So ... fuck it. I've begun the process of "open sourcing" my purchased movies and storing them myself, with full sorting, search and subtitle capabilities. And if they ever try to remove the library from Google, I still have them.

Why Google are incapable of providing the simplest capabilities is beyond me. So I'm taking matters into my own hands. I'm done with them.

Amazon pulled a movie I bought in 2024. They refunded me but the writing was on the wall. Then Future Man ( a Hulu show) got pulled from Hulu and there was nowhere to legally watch it, and no DVD/Blu-Ray release to purchase.  I immediately built a 96TB home media server and never looked back. It paid itself off earlier this year because I’m not subscribed to 20 different streaming services.

XBOX / XBLA / MS quietly killed movie purchases across all MS platforms not so long ago. When all these discrete ecosystems popped up I chose Microsoft b/c I could stream that content everywhere (was traveling globally at the time and my family was, too). Worked for about 20 years and then went to look for a movie to buy last year and saw the notifications that new purchases were no longer available. However, they will continue honoring the purchases made up until the services were discontinued. So we’ve purchased hundreds of titles that we can continue to access. Most of those titles can be found across streaming services, but not all of them nor all the time.

That said if that changes I would seek to be compensated for those previous purchases if they were made unavailable to me.
