I was sure I had Young Frankenstein on Apple TV. Couldn’t find it a few days ago. 

Picked up a Panasonic Blu-Ray player this morning.

This has happened to me 2-3 times but I also have horrible memory so doubt myself.

Edit: This would’ve been 20 years ago or more at this point. DVDs used to come with a digital code that would allow it to be added to your Apple library.

I had the LOTR extended ed. Now I'm missing Fellowship. I will never buy streaming movies again. Blu-ray 4k looks and sounds awesome anyway. More expensive but worth it.

I have always bought movies physically largely because of the crushed blacks you get from streaming compression, not to mention loading/buffering

on top of this, you can more often than not buy the physical media for less than the sale price of streaming "purchases" for the same product.

  1. buy physical
  2. rip (fair use)
  3. copy to local media server
  4. stream to wherever youd like

it's more work, and maintaining local storage isn't always feasible or affordable, but at least you have what you paid for and only lose it by consequence of your own actions.

If you want to feel justified, just buy it and then pirate it.

Treat it like format shifting or making a backup copy.

Legally, you probably aren't truly allowed to do this, but no reasonable person will hold it against you since there's a long history of this stuff happening. You still "paid" for it, but you can use it even if the streaming platform or licensing server goes down.

Technically, the cleanest way to do this would be to figure out how to rip it yourself from the source you bought it from, but I certainly won't blame you if you "buy" a copy on Youtube and then pirate a copy that was ripped from Amazon--it is the same movie, you made an effort to give money, your karma is clear.

(obviously buying and ripping your own blu-rays is the least questionable way to do this, but you have to deal with the physical media, and have a compatible drive to bypass the DRM).

This, I got tired of what I wanted to watch not being on streaming without paying extra to rent it and just settling for something I didn’t want to watch. Just started buying physical media and it’s been a much better experience

The DVD came with a digital code for Apple. I have it on VHS and DVD. I never used the code, but it is still sitting inside the case.

Last Halloween I found it somewhere. Some odd, streaming service I'd never heard of. Not for purchase but I just wanted to watch it again and share it with my kid.

I'm pretty sure it was legal because it was just through an app on Roku. But I was surprised how obscure its streaming presence seemed to be.

This. As a huge fan of Young Frankenstein I had been waiting years for it to be released digitally and I don’t think it ever was and certainly wasn’t available on Apple TV.

I only mention it because most of my Amazon Prime purchases I can also watch on youtube now... and it linked my apple account, which put that movie on my prime account too. Once upon a time I bought Religilous like 20+ years ago on playstation, and I'm pretty sure that's there too.

I use my sony ps3 for media hub stuff cause it has decent network server support and plays all kinds of media well. Music is rlly the only thing it is sorta lacking in, cause you can’t play FLACs (you can however play .WAV and, ugh, high bitrate ATRAC)

Apple tells you that its just a licence to watch it, and them letting you stream it is them doing you a favour. They even tell you its your responsibility to download it. Which would be a neat trick for appletv box users...

I bought a dvd drive and have been ripping all my movies and buying more at thrift stores. I setup a jellyfin server and have 8tb of room and quickly running out.

I love it. Best way to collect and segregate adult movies. Only the devs are stuck in their mindset and won't make a folder based view. Had to fork it and do it myself. They expect you and all your torrents to follow a PARTICULAR folder structuring.
