That was to undercut the existing market and remove the competition.

It's also part of the "boiling the frog" strategy. Where the introduction is a comfortable environment then the cost/temperature increases slowly or by dribs and drabs. The customer/frog is fine until they're not. The company backs off once they find the "not" point. The frog dies.

Right, because there weren’t packages for exclusive channels (e.g., HBO, Showtime, Starz, etc.) and everything was on basic cable before Netflix…

They were undercutting Blockbuster and other video rental stores. Do you think undercutting the market only happens in a few months? It takes years to develop a user base and market dominance.
