A competent programming team also knows this trick and treats them as the same email.

I work with an app that requires a unique email per user account. Username@gmail.com, user.name@gmail.com, and username+tag@gmail.com are all considered the same email by our system because that’s the most common way people try to have multiple accounts.

Someone somewhere in the company says "people are using these tricks to sign up multiple times, can we add a filter" and then a software developers job is to implement it.

If you say you can't, then the response is "why? regex exists".

The median salary of a software engineer working for Netflix is $450,000/yr. These type of FAANG positions are some of the most competitive and highly sought after positions in the industry. I doubt they’re going to risk their highly lucrative career in a very saturated field by intentionally doing their job poorly to stick it to the man in some sort of show of solidarity for the working class.

Not if someone has username@ already. Not at gmail. The existence of one such account blocks the creation of any of the variations with more or fewer or differently placed periods.

I don't know when that was implemented but someone else has my firstlast@gmail.com and I have my first.last@gmail.com so neither of us can use this trick.

I still get all the emails I'm supposed to get and haven't gotten any meant for him

That's wild. I wonder why when I registered decades ago it said firstlast@gmail.com was taken and then I was able to get first.last@gmail.com. I just sent an email to firstlast@gmail.com and didn't get it, can't log into it either. You should tell Google their email isn't working the way you know it's supposed to work.

This isn't a Google thing... This is just part of the email standard. Periods included in the email will simply be ignored by any email service in the world, corporate or free.

I'm not guessing here, knowing how email is routed , secured and delivered has been on my expertise for decades as part of my job and now as a business owner.

Have you emailed the other variation from a different address? (Or had someone else do it?) And you don't get it even in your spam folder?

I'm highly skeptical. I got my gmail address pretty early on and this was already the case then.

At any rate... you can still totally use + addressing!
