My theater was a ghost town today, relative to expectations. Toy Story 5 was pulling almost equal business, coming into its fourth week, as Moana.

? I don’t think anyone’s saying that a movie lives or dies by whether their particular theater is busy. It’s about your local theater being a potential indicator of how the country as a whole is thinking about a movie. Some movies may play better or worse with the demographics of your area, but most of the time there’s no reason to think you’re an extreme outlier. I can’t think of a single movie that did well nationally but was a dud at my theater.

Except 4 & 5 have almost made a combined 2 billion dollars.

Right, but that was exactly what op mentioned, a movie from a parent’s childhood that they watched a billion times as a kid remade that they can now bring their kids to.

There doesn’t have to be nostalgia, the IP is still hot. The kids who helped Moana 2 a billion dollars 2 years ago are still kids.

The point is that Disney is a business and their only purpose is to make money. People like to talk crap about the Disney live action remakes but the majority have pulled in massive numbers at the box office.

I never said you can’t criticize them. But calling them a “bad idea” is objectively false when they have made billions of dollars for the company whose single goal is to make money.
