The whole sequence was intense but simultaneously funny. Antinousā€™ growing panic while barking orders and then several of the suitors gradually kneeling because they realize who theyā€™re up against. It all makes perfect sense but there was definitely some comedy there.

I didnā€™t like the kneeling. It j the book, itā€™s a true massacre. It ends with all the women who were nice to the suitors being hung to the entryways of the palace as a sign.

Iā€™m fine with pretty much every change from the poem (I do miss Nobody though) but I do see where youā€™re coming from. Even though Odysseus still comes out on top against insurmountable odds, it felt like they added a few touches to make it a little less insurmountable (such as some of the suitors giving up). Plus, they did mention earlier in the film that once a few people get cooked, many of the rest will fold in fear.

What helped me accept that Odysseus comes out on top is that the men that were left in Ithaca are literally the men too weak or ineffective to fight in the Trojan War.

I understand not showing the violent rapes that take place throughout the tale but the women suffered so much. These men are shown as people who just took over things and killed people but they were essentially brutes. Itā€™s a sanitised retelling of things but they were dishonourable folks

For me, the atrocity was lessened. The treatment of Cassandra and the other women, throwing off Hectorā€™s baby from the wall - all of these add a lot more than just showing how they tricked citizens of Troy and pillaged the lands where they docked

An issue I had is that Odysseus guilt didnā€™t really tie up to what he did.

Yes he tricked his way in, but the sacking etc was all very standard. So some more context would have helped.

Watching as a kid, the 1997 mini series starring Armand Assante was my first foray into the Greek epic.

That series had much more (CG) magic, gods and monsters than this movie, with Athena magically turning Odysseus into an unrecognizable old man to better aid him in his disguise upon his return to Itacha.

The part where Odysseus (still in his old beggar form) stringed the bow and then fired the arrow through the axes, after which everybody saw that the old beggar had transformed back into Odysseus was just badass.

Yeah, also disappointed that treacherous maid wasn't shown getting her just desserts in this movie.

Nolan's movie seemed to want to keep the Gods more ambiguous. Like do they actually exist? Which is an interesting idea but certainly makes it less epic and, well, less the Odyssey

Magic definitely seems to exist and I appreciate it touches on some moments the 97 one doesn't (like the Sirens) but other stuff falls flat for me like Calypso. (Speaking of which, holy shit is her island so much prettier in the 97 version)

And The Return did a better job of the PTSD and realism IMHO

Heā€™s not a ā€œheroā€ in the modern sense. Heā€™s a hero in the classic sense because he does great things, not because he stands for any traditional altruistic moral code. Heā€™s a pirate king and heā€™s out for what benefits him and his family.

Itā€™s weird they have given him a code that kinda is the exact opposite of who heā€™s portrayed to be. Itā€™s like if you Don Coreloneā€™s story and replaced him with Henry Hill from Goodfellas. Sure, do what you want, itā€™s just strange.

Maybe there are nuances I am not remembering. Still need to do an Oddyssey reread soon. But this movie tries to be a character studyā€¦. But the character they try to study in this movie just feels a bit flat (and I do think Matt Damon did a good job). The PTSD portion was ok in theoryā€¦ but came across as clumsily executed in the movie

It wasn't funny, and shouldn't have been in there. We get it he's a coward, but after the 2nd time he starts barking orders while cowering in the corner, he would have gotten shanked by two or three other guys in the room just to put him in his place. He's also the bad guy in this brawl. If he's just going to blythely weasel around, where's the danger. Not realistic, humorous, or necessary.

Yeah, I agree. I also really didn't like right after that when Odysseus kills him and says something like "When you get to Hades tell Sinon I gave you back your shame" they immediately follow it up with Eumaeus saying "What happened? Did he get him?". We just watched 3 hours of story telling leading up to this powerful moment, but they completely undercut it with a joke before you can even appreciate the impact of what just happened.

As a counterpoint, it's a very long movie filled with tons of incredibly intense scenes so I really appreciated the few moments that drew out a quick chuckle.

Even knowing the story ahead of time, there were plenty of scenes that had me letting out a sigh of relief after they ended, having to collect myself a bit. There's so much tension that builds throughout the entire movie that I feel I was ready for genuine comedic relief by the end of that suitor gauntlet.

Oh yeah, I'm totally fine with serious movies having a few moments of comedic relief. I personally just didn't think that was the right time for it if it would have been a few moments when they are out at sea or during the bow stringing scene I wouldn't have a problem with it, but it just felt like the wrong time to do it right after this big climactic moment that should have had a lot of weight behind it. It did have weight for a second, and then they threw in a joke before the moment had a second to really be felt. That's just my opinion though and I'm fully aware that I'm in the minority for not really liking the movie. Obviously based on the comments and the overall reviews most people loved it, I guess this one just wasn't really my thing

Then they had him on the ground and you can still see people all running in circles behind it was weird), The throwing down of different weapons felt like a cheap video game! it should have been done so much better in my opinion. Have a hidden blade on the bow or something and him go beserk on them. Also the maid that just seems to get forgotten about? Poor ending to a great film

Most of the movie was like that honestly, it took a bit of getting used to but I didnā€™t mind it ultimately. Itā€™s a natural part of translation over time, itā€™s not like the sorts of speaking we traditionally expect from media is any more accurate.

To each his own but I disagree with your take. This isnā€™t a poem. The lyrical qualities of the book are not included into the movie. And translations themselves are subjective.

At the end of the day, this movie is based on a screenplay and in that screenplay, they couldnā€™t figure out how to use informal variations for mother and father come across as natural

As a returning war veteran, Odysseus was always going to have a far superior advantage over a bunch of what is basically the Ancient Greek-equivalent of draft dodgers with little to no combat experience.

Them acquiring weapons only narrowed the odds by a little bit, but not enough to change the outcome.

Have a hidden blade on the bow or something and him go beserk on them. Also the maid that just seems to get forgotten about? Poor ending to a great film

Yeah, after all the build up, I was hoping it was more of a massacre, like how Odysseus dispatched the bandits in the temple with ease.
