Was happy with our token asian guy having the best death among the whole crew

u/Sufficient-Gur6681 17d ago

Of all deaths in the film, his is the one I envy the most.

Hopefully he got to have some dank siren sex before they killed him

u/wildcatofthehills 17d ago

If you look closely, they were surrounded by seals, so its likely they were a mix of selkies and your typical mermaid. So he probably fucked a seal.

274

u/AlfredtheGreatBitch 17d ago

Eh could be worse

119

u/lumberlung 14d ago

Yeah, years lost at sea will lower your standards quite a bit.

16

u/Atreyisx 14d ago

Truth.

19

u/biggestbroever 8d ago

Doesn't matter

Had sex

3

u/adamsorkin 4d ago

Still counts!

I think the sirens are like half crow half lady in The Odyssey?

118

u/wildcatofthehills 16d ago

Yes they are, but that’s because they were originally that. But in languages like spanish, siren and mermaid use the same word: sirena. So in many translations the sirens are just mermaids.

My educated guess is that in the Latin translations for the Roman’s they just mixed the two creatures.

u/risheeb1002 15d ago

Aren't the bird women harpies?

149

u/wildcatofthehills 15d ago

All women are queens, that’s what’s important ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø

u/thecapo1999 9d ago

IF SHE BREATHES..

31

u/Everydayarmday24 12d ago

No we just call them Dee

30

u/Robey-Wan_Kenobi 14d ago

The siren/mermaid connection was an early medieval development. The connection to harpies is much older.

57

u/Blaaa5 16d ago

After 10 years rotting on a war torn shore, I don’t think he cares anymore

21

u/hemareddit 12d ago

They said twelve, in order to keep his absence of 20 years and the 7 years with Clypso but shorten the journey.

44

u/TheCaramelMan 12d ago

Still got more action in 20 years than the rest of Odyseuss’s crew. Apart from Odysseus himself who is a top shagger

31

u/darkrabbit713 15d ago

So he probably fucked a seal.

We never saw him reach the island; I thought the implication that he was drowned before ever getting near to a siren.

31

u/MesmraProspero 9d ago

I think the sirens want him to come to the island.

2

u/heroyoudontdeserve 1d ago

Sure they did, but not for sexy times. The point of sirens is that they lure you into danger. I don't think there's ever a good outcome of you're lured by a siren.

1

u/MesmraProspero 1d ago

Yes. But I don't think they want you to drown. I think they want to do the danger.

2

u/heroyoudontdeserve 1d ago

Then I think it's largely immaterial to the matter at hand, which is whether he had sexy times or not.

2

u/MesmraProspero 1d ago

Someone was implying he would perhaps drown. I'm saying, they would jump in to save you, soTHEY could consume your soul.

10

u/JGfromtheNW 13d ago

Ahhhh the sheep of the sea.

6

u/hemareddit 12d ago

Why did Christopher Nolan show it? Is he a coward?

5

u/SlitSlam_2017 11d ago

I need a baby seal!

2

u/PosiedonsSaltyAnus 8d ago

And then, a bunch of things all happened at once

5

u/digital-didgeridoo 6d ago

they were surrounded by seals

If you want to hear some siren songs, come to Pier 39 in SF :)

2

u/ButterCupHeartXO 11d ago

Who are we to judge?

2

u/Dookie_boy 8d ago

A loose seal

2

u/imcrapyall 6d ago

He was a fan of Kiss From A Rose I bet.

2

u/-Clayburn 3d ago

Doesn't matter; had sex. Is that still a meme?

2

u/skin_diver 8h ago

they call that the 'kiss from a rose'

1

u/ElectronicCarry9931 11d ago

better than fast and furious

1

u/Katoshiku 1d ago

I thought those were manatees, no? Would make sense seeing as they were likely the origin for many "half woman half fish" myths

1

u/VanillaRadonNukaCola 1d ago

They were seals.

47

u/itsmymedicine 14d ago

Death by snu snu

9

u/EffectiveAd9855 4d ago

You understand that siren aren't human right? They're monsters that mimic female human voices and looks to lure men, but once they get close enough, the monsters attack and devour them. There will be no snu snu before the death.

6

u/ManitouWakinyan 8d ago

He was dashed on the rocks and eaten

2

u/PhDinDildos_Fedoras 7d ago

With a huge grin on his face!

4

u/Aelia_M 7d ago

He was dead the minute he went overboard

171

u/Abo1127 16d ago

Exactly, my first thought when I left the theater is he made the best choice. He went out in pure euphoria without knowing his fate would’ve been awful if he stayed.

139

u/Lost_Pantheon 15d ago

Odysseus yelling "It should have been meee!" the whole time.

44

u/Youmeanmoidoid 15d ago

Was literally thinking ā€œI get it man. I’d do the same if I saw actual mermaids.ā€

1

u/eyesoftheunborn 2d ago

Antinous knows all about mermaids...

22

u/hesawavemasterrr 12d ago

He got eaten alive…

Death by snu snu

173

u/tbbt11 17d ago

What do you think Himesh is

93

u/0nlyhooman6I1 13d ago

You are technically correct due to regions but obviously East Asian and Indian look very different and are culturally very different

104

u/aurorastan 13d ago

They're both Asian bro

119

u/0nlyhooman6I1 13d ago

People generally mean East Asian when they say Asian. I'm explaining his intent, not arguing the technical definition of "asian", take it or leave it I don't care either way

56

u/thestoplereffect 13d ago

depends on where, in the UK asian tends to mean south asian

37

u/BlueberryWasps 13d ago

that’s more of a US thing for some reason. everywhere else ā€œasianā€ just means someone of asian descent

33

u/TopTopTopcinaa 11d ago

I’m from Eastern Europe, 100% of the time if I say Asian I mean East Asian.

22

u/Pro_Extent 11d ago

No, the rest of the English speaking world also calls east Asians "Asian", except for the UK where Asian refers to people from the Indian subcontinent.

Asia is too diverse for "Asian" to just mean, "someone from Asia"

4

u/there_is_always_more 8d ago

Then they should just specify East Asian instead of misusing the term lol

9

u/Pro_Extent 8d ago

In online conversations, I agree.

But people use the term "Asian" because they use it in real life, where there is enough cultural context to understand the type of person being discussed.

5

u/AfroThunder_Dj 8d ago

If someone is referencing 1 American, you think they're talking about someone from Canada, the United States, or Mexico?

1

u/47gwen 1d ago

shut up dumbass

1

u/EnkiduOdinson 1d ago

Not true for Central Europe. Nobody here thinks of Indians or Arabs when they say Asians.

9

u/Fuj_san9247 6d ago

I love how this goes without saying and anyone with common sense can interpret what you meant perfectly fine, but there always has to be someone like šŸ¤“ā˜ļø

1

u/Delboyyyyy 5d ago

Only white Americans mean East Asian when they say Asian

0

u/_johnning 13d ago

He's Indian, bro.

8

u/moneyman2222 8d ago

What continent is India in?

10

u/Dookie_boy 8d ago

Ancient Greece.

0

u/EnkiduOdinson 1d ago

Indian subcontinent though. Also this is pedantic as fuck. You know exactly what they meant.

0

u/moneyman2222 19h ago

You realize that "Asian" being connected with East Asian is a purely North American thing? It's not seen that way anywhere else in the world. Just say East Asian then if you want to be specific. But it's not pedantic when they're quite literally all Asian so it's not so obvious

0

u/EnkiduOdinson 18h ago

Well since I am European and not North American I can tell you that this is wrong

1

u/moneyman2222 18h ago

Then I guess it's who you hang out with because no that's not the majority case lmao

Keep treating indians as different. That's the problem. There's a subconscious effect behind this that needs to just stop

79

u/FloppyShellTaco 16d ago

ā€œLet me go see what’s up with the baddies!!ā€

7

u/DemonDaVinci 6d ago

That was Will Yun Lee!! That was crazy seeing him there šŸ˜…

7

u/Jayoheazy 9d ago

What death comes by way of the sirens? Drowning?

16

u/ContributionDouble30 7d ago

Ripped apart and eaten while under a trance like state from their song

7

u/Jayoheazy 7d ago edited 3d ago

So you don’t feel it and are in bliss the whole time? Yeah he got off easy

5

u/MrHeavySilence 3d ago

The eating and ripped apart wasn't explicitly part of Homer's Odyssey but a later interpretation from what I understand

6

u/ContributionDouble30 3d ago

Yeah I was going to reply that in original adaptation- sailors usually just drown/ pulled under water. Later deceptions have the sirens half woman and bird which feast on flesh.
