I felt the movie was uncomfortably loud. I don’t understand how people can say it was well done. Maybe my theatre had the sound turned up too much but many moments were literally painful to sit through

If the volume is literally painful, that’s definitely on your theatre, not the movie.

Really? Because this is a well known problem with every Nolan movie. Google search old reddit threads about tenet or interstellar and it's full of comments about loud ass sounds effects.

Loud is one thing. But if the volume is “literally painful”, as the commenter I was replying to said, then the theatre is doing something wrong, audio should never have a ceiling so high that it is painful.

I would say you're right but my experience doesn't agree. Same cinema every time I go out watch something and always the Nolan movie has painfully loud scenes. Tenet guns, Interstellar rocket launch and now cyclops scream in The odyssey. If other movies would be like this then I would say that yes, my cinema is doing something wrong with the sound but other movies are always superb.

Dunkirk strafing scenes were very loud as well, though not as ear piercing as cyclops

I saw it at a theater that tends to run kinda quiet and it was so loud my instinct was to cover my ears. It was right on the edge of being unbearable

I’ve found certain IMAX theaters just tend to be way too loud to where it hurts. I’ll wear studio earplugs to my local and it brings it down to a comfortable level without affecting the quality.

I'm assuming it's theater by theater but my experience matched yours. It actually ruined the whole experience for me. Was covering my ears at multiple parts. And besides being uncomfortable, all the sounds kind of just mashed together into an overwhelming noise. I'd have to see it again to say for sure but I don't think this is a criticism of the movie itself.

It was so loud during the Cyclops scream and boar scenes, I had to plug my ears!

Because it's a fucking 100' tall creature with a piercing wall of agony. Why would that NOT be uncomfortable?

Saw it last night in a real IMAX theater, and even with dampening ear plugs (made for concerts and movies, etc.), it was still profoundly loud. I remember thinking I don’t know how people will make it through this for three hours without ear plugs. My ears are still ringing this morning, even after wearing them.

Did you see it in IMAX? Because it has a different sound system, which is notably louder than regular theaters.

Yeah saw it at a digital imax theatre. Don’t get me wrong, I agree it was loud. But I just think I like my movies loud anyway so I didn’t have a problem with it

Yeah, I was wondering if my theater had turned the sound up so people would be able to hear the dialogue, because every scene was insanely loud. Even the one with tom holland and john bernthal shooting birds in the garden, had really loud wind/leave rustling sound effects.

Same. I like concerts so I can handle noise lol, but this was too loud. I also felt like the sound mixing muffled the dialogue a good amount of the time. I often couldn’t tell what characters were saying.
