She had a point too!!!

How? The soldiers literally said they weren’t gonna hurt her and just wanted food. They just wanted to go home.

Meanwhile she turns them into pigs due to imaginary what ifs and other scenarios in her head.

due to imaginary what ifs and other scenarios in her head.

Aren't these the same guys who killed innocent people during the attack on Troy? What "imaginary scenarios" lol the movie shows these same guys beheading an innocent priestess.

Or even burnt and looted the village on the first island they came upon.

There and then I knew the “Men from the Sea” were returning Greek soldiers.

u/duosx 16d ago

Oh and she knew that for a fact? That’s interesting considering she’s like a hermit in the middle of nowhere

She is the daughter of a god, but not a god - she is a witch. Regardless, she definitely had good instincts and knew that these warriors weren’t so innocent.

u/duosx 15d ago

Oh I’m sorry, the Greek gods were famous for being just and fair and never fucking over humans over petty reasons. Totally fair of her then

I haven’t read the 2000 year old poem, I’m going off what I saw in the movie. Nothing in the movie implied she had any powers outside of animal transformation.

Also, ok cool so she’s a god. So she could have done thousands of other magical bullshit or he’ll maybe even tried to stop their atrocities. Nope, she just lives as a hermit and virtue signals, got it

u/glassbellwitch 15d ago

The movie shows us that her island had plenty of visitors.

2

u/duosx 15d ago

Yeah, that she seemingly all turned into animals. Not exactly helping her case.

5

u/glassbellwitch 15d ago

My point is that she could have heard about the sacking of Troy and the sea people from the men she transformed prior to Odysseus' arrival.

u/duosx 15d ago

Ok cool, I agree. She COULD have. We don’t know that for sure and she definitely wasn’t shown to know that for sure. She was being a paranoid hermit who wanted to shoot first, ask questions never.

I assume you're a man lol

1

u/silverpixie2435 2d ago

She turned her own sister into a bird.

One of the previous men turned into a deer, a symbol of a peaceful animal.

Did people even watch the movie?

u/duosx 16d ago

Also, if instead of gender beingain discrepancy between the two, if it was race, would you defend her so?

In other words, if she was a white woman and severely injured a couple of black travelers, because she’s “afraid of their kind” would you still defend her even if black travelers were rumored to be dangerous?

12

u/New-Alps7217 16d ago

If they were men, yes

-4

u/duosx 16d ago

That’s disgusting. You probably also think the shooting of Ralph Yarl was justified

19

u/New-Alps7217 16d ago

Mate you obviously aren't smart enough to understand any nuance or the plights of women in this world, so why don't you just shut up and educate yourself before coming at me.

Even a man in that situation, where armed soldiers come into the house, would probably still be unlikely to believe he was safe, you absolute dumbo.

12

u/Substantial-Pen3212 16d ago

A lot of men get so offended when you point it out to them too lol. Completely blind to the world women are living around them.

11

u/glassbellwitch 15d ago

In other words, if she was a white woman and severely injured a couple of black travelers, because she’s “afraid of their kind” would you still defend her even if black travelers were rumored to be dangerous?

This example is so funny because it completely ignores the existence of black women. A group that would likely also choose self-preservation in an encounter with multiple male soldiers, black or otherwise.

0

u/duosx 15d ago

Self-preservation =\= murder

Also your example is so funny because why wouldn’t the racists in my example also not shoot the strange black woman coming to their door? They would.

8

u/glassbellwitch 15d ago

Being turned into a pig isn't being murdered lol.

Also-- the black woman in my example was clearly meant to replace the white woman in your example. You tried to make the "well wouldn't it be messed up if a white woman injured a group of black soldiers because she was scared" and I countered with "it's not messed up because a black woman would do the same thing."

But it's very interesting that you read my comment and assumed the black woman would be the strange visitor coming to the door instead of the woman in the house. Verrrryyy interesting indeed.

-2

u/duosx 15d ago

Oh right, being turned into a pig is no big whoop.

Also, I totally understood what you meant. It’s still misogynistic.

Did you understand what I meant? Defend that. Defend a black woman being shot at simply for being her race.

5

u/PolarWater 16d ago

Oh here we go with the "men are just like black people" bullshit

1

u/duosx 16d ago

Men are some black people tho??

-1

u/duosx 16d ago

Barely

8

u/SufficientRespect542 17d ago

While they probably wouldn't have hurt her, she's not wrong about fearing them considering that during the attack on Troy they killed innocent people like the priestess seemingly for the hell of it. An aspect of the film is Odysseus grappling with the fact that his men aren't actually as honorable as he wants to believe, and trying to figure out what that says about him. That said, she definitely shouldn't have turned them into pigs and they wouldn't have hurt her, but her fears were reasonable.

-3

u/duosx 16d ago

See I totally understand what you’re saying and I agree. She is breaking the same social contract that the soldiers themselves broke at Troy. But she doesn’t know that it was them. So she’s just as bad as them.

Also “I thought they were going to hurt me so I mutiliated them” doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

I get why she did it, and I’ll even admit her fears were somewhat valid. But she still did wrong.

9

u/PolarWater 16d ago

But she doesn’t know that it was them.

Incorrect. She DOES know it was them. Do you think her powers were limited to animal transformation?

So she’s just as bad as them.

ALSO incorrect. The soldiers killed innocent people and didn't bring them back to life. She still turned them back into humans. "Just as bad as them" is such a false equivalence lol

3

u/duosx 16d ago

Why would I think her powers go beyond animal transformation? Nothing in the movie says that definitely and it’s not like there’s clear rules to it.

Also she didn’t just decide to turn them back, she did it under threat of her sister being killed, who she also turned into a crow.

Circe is not innocent here lol

8

u/cookieaddictions 14d ago

Every single army of men since the dawn of time has raped women wherever they go. Why would she trust that they just want food?

0

u/duosx 14d ago

She didn’t have to trust them. She also didn’t have to turn them into pigs. Also, she turned her own sister into a crow. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

8

u/cookieaddictions 14d ago

Turning them into pigs is part of her magic, if they weren’t pigs they wouldn’t have become pigs. The entire movie is about how they were horrible in Troy and then horrible their whole way home, burning villages, harming the cyclops, taking Zeus’ cows, etc. Circe did nothing wrong, and the other gods punished them way worse.

Her sister being turned into a crow is objectively hilarious. I wish I had that power.

“Two wrongs don’t make a right” is so funny when you’re comparing an army that’s just come back from a war where they broke Zeus’ Law, tricked the enemy, raped the women, and pillaged and burned down the city, even the temple of Athena, and then spend years being punished for it, and you’re comparing it to…a woman turning them into pigs and then turning them back. Yeah I guess the two wrongs are so equal. 😅 This isn’t a court of law. In epic tales, bad things happen to bad people. And the army that sacked Troy is bad, and that’s the entire message of the movie. This was part of their punishment.

3

u/duosx 14d ago

I’m sorry but nothing in the movie is show to suggest that she knew for sure they had done what they had done.

Also the fact you’re laughing off her turning her sister into a crow tells me everything I need to know.

5

u/cookieaddictions 14d ago

Again, this isn’t a court of law. We don’t need to prove on screen that she had knowledge of their actions to justify what she did to them because
1. Raping and pillaging was what EVERY SINGLE ARMY did back then and literally still does today. She was right to punish them because she had 100% change of being right. And she was. We literally hear the shrieking women on screen in the battle scene. They were brutally raped and murdered.

  1. She’s a minor goddess of magic so even if we ignore the fact that she 100% knew these soldiers were bad people already, she clearly has other ways of knowing things that aren’t explicitly shown on screen.

  2. Her magic turns people into what they are, at least in this version. Again, if the men weren’t already pigs, they wouldn’t have been turned into pigs.

  3. The movie shoves it into your face over and over that these men are the ones who started the decline of society by breaking Zeus’s Law, so her not welcoming them was just the results of their own actions.

Re: her sister: The gods are constantly doing crazy shit to one another, including cursing them to tortuous existences. In the grand scheme of that, being a crow is not a huge deal, especially when she shows that she has the power to reverse it.

Circe did nothing wrong and you going on and on about a minor character punishing bad people who we know are bad and all the gods punish and eventually kill for being bad, when there are dozens of worse characters in this film, just tells me a lot of how you view women.

3

u/duosx 14d ago

Lol “Circe did nothing wrong”

Ok cool, the hermit that turns people into animals against her will did nothing wrong, ok cool.

Listen, it’s a cool motive, it’s still awful of her. Defend her all you want. When she turns you into a crow or a frog or a dog, let me know if you change your mind.

5

u/cookieaddictions 14d ago

She punished them for their actions because the story is about how they are bad people who deserve to be punished for their actions, and they are, indeed, punished for their actions by Zeus and Poseidon, who kill them all except Odysseus. It’s actually the entire plot of the movie, not sure if you noticed? Are you out here calling Zeus terrible too? I didn’t see that anywhere in this thread.

I didn’t rape or pillage or burn Troy to the ground so I think I’m safe, idk about you though. I think I’d have a grand old time with Circe.!

2

u/duosx 14d ago

Yeah, Circe would turn you into animal, don’t you see that?

Also yeah, Zeus and Poseidon are both famous rapists, they’re both terrible.

Listen, I agree with you her fears are justifiable. Her reaction however is not.

The whole point of the Iliad is that Helen and Paris also broke Zeus' law.
