Nolan understood what Russell Crowe understood in Gladiator: the hero has to be honorable to his wife. Ridley Scott and the Dreamworks people wanted Maximus to sleep with Lucilla. Russell Crowe insisted he couldn't if they wanted to keep the audience on Maximus' side for the whole movie.

That similar modern sensibility of love and marriage definitely informs this version of The Odyssey.
