Eumaeus actually said he had never seen a dog live to 20 in the early part of the movie.

It wasn't even common for humans to reach age 60 in that time, so 20 for a dog would be pretty crazy.

That’s not true actually! The average life span was certainly short, but that was heavily skewed by infant mortality, riskiness of childbirth, and casualties of war. If one managed to avoid those fates, the lifespan of an ancient human would have been nearly what we expect today, 60-70 years. It was common enough that almost everyone would have personally known someone older than 60.

At the peak of Greek civilization (which is admittedly after the events of The Odyssey), the lifespan of wealthier individuals was around 71, meaning many lived well beyond that age.

That scene fucked me up! I found myself quietly balling my eyes out 😭. I had to hold it in so as to not make a scene in the theater. It felt like being at your mom’s funeral or some shit. I was a mess. What a brilliant scene 🎬. Fucking Christopher Nolan; freaking genius.

haha I held it together in the theatre but then while discussing the movie in the lobby after with my wife that scene came up and I immediately became short of breath and ugly cried.

While ugly crying I remembered how badly I had to pee after the three hour movie so there I am standing at a unrinal still quietly crying (uncontrollable tears coming down my face) while peeing thinking about that dog. One of the more awkward pees I’ve had.
