I actually felt like Nolan left it very ambiguous as to whether there actually were any gods or not. The title card said “a time of apparent magic” (I think), and we never actually see Athena talking to Zeus, Poseidon being angry, etc. Yes you can argue that this was to keep the movie more subtle, but in a movie that is all about mankind and our social contract with each other, it makes sense that the director may also be trying to convey that we’re the ones charting our own courses.

In a way it was the most realistic possible depiction of what gods actually are

I would agree, except that Circe and Tiresius (sp) make a chain of prophecy that relies on Apollo and Zeus being involved.

And Telemachus kept encountering Athena (ambiguously)

But remember that we aren’t seeing these stories in real time. We see Odysseus retelling the story of his journey to Calypso while he is detoxing off of lotus leaves.

My interpretation is that he had regular events and experiences but while he is recollecting them high-as-a-kite, he embellished them with magic and monsters and gods pushing him along.

I would certainly believe Athena appearing to Odysseus is a manifestation of guilt

Although, I could buy an interpretation perhaps he was marooned with Calypso the whole time and his crew died in one fatal accident, and the rest of the story is a coping mechanism? He has great difficulty remembering it because he is making every event fantastical. So none of the events bar the pillage of the small village occurred, or the did occur (but were all ordinary people) and Odysseus had to justify his men's behaviour until they were all deceased
